Course Adds and Drops (Revision Period)

The registration revision period, commonly known as the ‘add and drop’ period, allows you to make course or timetable changes without academic or financial penalties. Dropped courses during this time will not appear on your transcripts, and tuition fees for these courses will be reversed.

• Drop a course deadline: January 19, 2026
• Add a course deadline: January 20, 2026

During the revision period, you can:

• Add a class if a seat becomes available or if you change your mind about a subject
• Register for a course from your waitlist if space becomes available
• Update your residency status in Aurora and receive a fee adjustment if applicable

After the revision period, you can still withdraw from a class, but it will be recorded on your transcript, and you will be responsible to pay for all fees for that course.

Fee Payment Information

Ensure that your tuition is paid by the following deadlines to avoid late fees and holds on your account:

• Winter Term: February 4, 2026.

Access your fee payment information through Aurora and navigating to “View Account Summary by Term Card.” For more details, visit: Fee Payment, Non or Late Payment, Sponsorship Information, Financial Aid & Awards.

Photo Identification (ID) Cards 

The Pop-Up Photo ID Centre will be open at the Fort Garry Campus, stop by UMSU University Centre, room 102B, during these dates and times: 

• January 5^th – 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
• January 6^th – 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
• January 7^th – 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Students can check in online for faster service. ID cards are also required to obtain the U-Pass for Winnipeg Transit bus service.

Verify your Social Insurance Number

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) mandates that the university collect Social Insurance Numbers (SINs) to issue T2202 tax forms. You can verify your SIN on your Aurora homepage under “Verify my SIN card.” Those needing corrections can contact Registrar.Office@umanitoba.ca for assistance.

In November 2024, registration was moved to New Aurora. This means that students will now have to register for courses using the New Aurora system, since registration is no longer available in Aurora Classic.

This is a big transition that will take getting used to. That’s why the University has produced an array of helpful resources to help with Registration in New Aurora.

If you are having trouble with the process of registering, you can contact the Registrar’s Office.

If you are having trouble deciding which courses to take, you can speak to an advisor in your faculty.

Key Dates to Remember

Stay organized by familiarizing yourself with important dates for the Winter Term. Be sure to check the Important Dates and Deadlines for a complete list. 

The registration revision period, often called the “add and drop” period, runs until January 20, 2025. This is your chance to finalize your course schedule without academic or financial penalties.

• Drop deadline: January 17, 2025
• Add deadline: January 20, 2025

If you are on a waitlist, you should monitor course openings closely and drop any courses they don’t plan to take, freeing up spots for others. After January 20, course withdrawals will appear on transcripts, and full fees will apply.

Tuition Deadline Approaching

To avoid late fees and holds on your account, ensure that your tuition is paid by the deadline of February 5, 2025, for the Fall Term. You can view your fee payment information by logging into Aurora and selecting “View Account Summary by Term Card.” For additional information, refer to Fee Payment.

Keep Moving Forward

Even though some services will be paused, you can still:

• Add or drop classes to finalize your schedule.
• Join a waitlist for courses that are full (note that waitlist notifications will be paused starting Thursday, December 18 at 12:00pm).
• View your position on a waitlisted course.
• Check your grades from the Fall Term to plan your next steps.
• Run an Audit with UM Achieve to check on your degree progress

However, services like transcript orders and enrolment verifications (EVs) will be unavailable starting 4:00 PM on Tuesday December 16, and will be reactivated on Monday January 5, at 9:00 AM.

From now until the end of the Winter Term break on February 26, 2022, all non-essential activity will continue remotely. Effective immediately, we are asking staff to work remotely and for course activity to be moved to remote delivery wherever possible. Limited in-person activity may continue if required and there is no reasonable remote alternative. Further information will be provided to students by their faculties and to staff by their supervisors.   

Our decision to require all those attending campus to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, except those few with an approved exemption, was taken to significantly enhance the safety in our community of learning, discovery and engagement. This requirement will remain in effect for all those attending campus beginning January 24, 2022 when rapid testing will no longer be an approved alternative to vaccination.

We are carefully monitoring the emerging Omicron variant, and we will use the leadup to the Winter Term break to re-evaluate our approach and respond to any changes in public health orders.  We do hope that we will be in a position to resume face-to-face operations for the remainder of the Winter Term, but this will be guided by what the public health experts deem to be both prudent and safe.

Thank you for your engagement in this important discussion. We hear you, and in this unprecedented situation, we will continue to be guided by science and not our best-laid plans.

Winter Term will be delivered primarily remotely, with a small number of in-person classes. To see how your classes will be delivered, check the Class Schedule in your Aurora account. 

Here are some answers to questions you may have:

How will I know if I have an in-person course?

Info about individual course delivery can be found in Aurora. Check your class schedule for details. You may also receive an email from your instructor through UM Learn. If you do not hear from your department or instructor towards the start of Winter Term, you should email them directly.

Why are some courses being offered in person?

If a course – or segments of a course – were approved to be delivered in-person this was typically due to the class having a hands-on component that could not be transitioned successfully to remote learning.

What protocols are in place to keep me safe during in-person courses?

A Health and Safety plan was approved by the COVID-19 steering committee for every course being delivered on campus. For further details please speak to your instructor.

How can I read my new class information in Aurora?

If your course is being offered remotely, “Remote Learning” is indicated in the ‘Where’ field. If your course includes an on-campus component, a location is indicated in the ‘Where’ field. If you are required to be available at specific times, this information is provided under ‘Time and Days’.

As a reminder, you can now VW from a Fall/Winter Term spanning course. Waitlist notifications will be sent out soon, watch your UM email. If you have questions about choosing courses for Winter Term, connect with an academic advisor.

Using Aurora is something that many of us use on a regular basis. During the maintenance period, you will still be able to use some functions in Aurora.

What can I still do in aurora?

Most of the other Aurora functions will be accessible, such as order documents, VW from a Fall Term course and update your personal information. 

If you are a new student for Winter Term, you can still get ready to start the term by:

• Checking your computer and internet connections to make sure you can work remotely, follow the UM Student Connectivity Recommendations.
• Ordering your student ID card through Aurora. Make sure you follow these document guidelines:
  • A photo for the ID Card
  • A signature you have written for the ID Card
  • An image of your Government Issued Photo Identification
  • An image of your study permit if you are an international student
• Reviewing the First Year Planning Guide to make sure that you are properly prepared to register for courses.
• Familiarizing yourself with the UM’s rules and regulations by reading the Important Notice in the Online Academic Calendar.

For students interested in registering for Winter/Summer Term spanning courses, registration opens November 30 at 9 am CDT.
