Dr. Ben Schellenberg, an associate professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba, is doing research about sports fans and how their passion can either be a force for good or bad in their lives.

“The better the team is doing, the more this topic is front of mind for people,” said Schellenberg.

“You’re almost cheering for yourself. You are on the ice because this team is kind of part of who you are. So that’s why we see this strong connection to teams, even lifelong connections.

The veteran of 14 seasons in Blue and Gold also had plenty of fans on the field on Wednesday. One was former University of Manitoba Bisons receiver A.K. Gassama, who was chosen by his hometown team in the sixth round of the CFL draft last month.

“He’s in great shape. It’s pretty phenomenal to see what he’s doing,” said Gassama, who remembers as a child watching Stegall perform his heroics at Canad Inns Stadium.

It would probably be unwise to bet against AK Gassama.

The 5-9, 158-pound wide receiver doesn’t fit the mould of what a successful pro is supposed to look like but don’t bother telling him that.

He’s been hearing it for years.

“You get tired of it, but my whole life, I’ve always been in a position of being an underdog because of that,” said Gassama Wednesday, a day after the Winnipeg Blue Bombers made him a sixth-round (55th overall) pick in the CFL Draft. “But I love it and I embrace it. It’s never stopped me before. Honestly, it’s made me who I am.”
