University of Manitoba, Bisons football coach Stan Pierre was shocked when he heard the news, but he doesn’t believe the rules will be adopted outside the CFL. “Really shocked and kind of bewilderment, I am wondering what his rationale is and where are they going with this thing?” said Pierre.

Tax season is almost here, and we want to share some important tax information and reminders to ensure a hassle-free tax season.

Tax forms

T2202 – A tuition tax credit, called a T2202 form, is issued to students and is used to claim the Tuition Tax Credit. This form is released annually, usually near the end of February, and is ONLY available online through Aurora. Questions regarding your T2202 should be addressed to the Registrar’s Office.

T4A – A T4A slip reports income from many different sources. As a student, your T4A slip will report the scholarship or bursary income you received while you were enrolled at the University of Manitoba. Generally, you’ll only receive a T4A slip from the payer of these income sources if the total of the payments was more than $500 in the year or if income tax was deducted from the payments. Questions regarding a T4A slip should be addressed to the Financial Aid and Awards Office.

Social Insurance Numbers (SINs) and Taxes

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has mandated that the University of Manitoba collect the Social Insurance Numbers (SINs) of students. This information is required to produce your T2202 (Tuition and Enrolment Certificate), which is your Canadian tax form.

These tax changes have been in effect since the 2019 tax year, so if you are a returning student and have already added your SIN in Aurora, you do not have to add it again.

How to add your Social Insurance Number (SIN) in Aurora:

Login to Aurora.

Locate the Verify my SIN card and select ‘Help me verify my SIN’

Please note, if you select the “No Social Insurance Number” option, you are indicating you do not have a valid SIN. All students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents should have a valid SIN.

Missing or Incorrect SIN: Updates can be made through the Verify my Sin card in Aurora. Once you have updated your SIN in Aurora you must contact the Registrar’s Office for the SIN to be updated on your T2202. Please contact the Registrar’s Office if you have issues updating your SIN.

How to access your tax forms:

Step 1: Log in to Aurora.

Step 2: Locate the ‘Tax Information’ card and select ‘View my Tax information’.

Step 3: Choose the applicable tax form option

The T4A link will take you to Aurora Classic.

The T2202 link will take you to the Student Profile where you’ll find a T2202 link in the left-hand menu.

A T2202 is an official statement of the tuition and fees paid for qualifying courses that are eligible for claim on your income tax return. T2202’s will become available the afternoon of Friday, February 28. When accessing a T2202 form, students will be prompted to download the form before viewing. The download process will differ depending on your browser.

A T4A is the official statement of scholarships, bursaries, awards or other income. T4A forms are available now, and will only be issued to you if you have received any of those awards or other forms of income from the university in the 2024 calendar year (January to December).

Tax Questions?

For general tax receipt questions, visit the Tax Information page on the Registrar’s Office site.

For more information on the changes to the reporting of tuition, education, and textbooks, refer to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website. Any in-depth questions regarding the use of tax receipts in the tax preparation process should be directed to CRA.

Tax guides are available from any CRA office or Canada Post Office. CRA also publishes a booklet called “Students & Income Tax” – Government form P105 (E).

Keegan Slijker always loved the game of basketball. He was first introduced to the sport through his church’s youth group, and later saved up enough money to buy his own basketball hoop where neighbourhood kids would gather for games in the street. After high school, Keegan played in Winnipeg’s local men’s league with a group of friends, where his skills on the court stood out, despite never having played organized basketball. Several coaches of Winnipeg college teams took notice and before long, Keegan was recruited to play for the Bisons.

More than just a game, basketball has had a tremendous impact on Keegan’s life. The community and the relationships he developed have been very positive. His gratitude for what the sport provided helped motivate Keegan to create Fitness Up North.

Bringing basketball programming to Northern communities

Fitness Up North organizes youth basketball camps in Canada’s north. The program improves physical literacy in northern youth, and provides needed programming that builds community engagement and development.

The idea came about fairly organically; Keegan explains that his sister was working in Moose Lake, MB at the time and told him, “The kids here love basketball. You should come up here!” Not long after, Keegan arrived in Moose Lake and ran a 2-day basketball camp with help from his sister. Over 100 kids signed up and their enthusiasm was evident. He saw the need for this programming in Northern communities, and noticed that no one else was doing it so he started thinking about how he could run more of these camps.

Developing an entrepreneurship mindset

Keegan decided to connect with the Stu Clark Centre for Entrepreneurship to learn more about running a business. He developed a business plan and submitted it to the New Venture Championship competition and ended up winning first place and the People’s Choice Award. He recalls, “The Stu Clark Centre validated my ideas, which made me believe in myself and gave me the confidence that Fitness Up North could really take off.” He emphasized that any student can go to the Stu Clark Centre for help with their entrepreneurial idea, and said, “they have a coach to help you with anything you need.”

Building new skills

Keegan learned many skills along the way. Above all, he learned that entrepreneurial thinking is about problem-solving, the ability to adapt and be resourceful when challenges arise. He also developed his leadership skills, and encourages other, “Don’t be afraid to try! Failure is normal; your idea might just require some tweaks and modifications.” Giving presentations, developing a budget, writing grant proposals were other important skills that Keegan developed along the way.

Giving back to community

Keegan said it was great to be able to make a living doing something that he is passionate about. He also met many wonderful people and visited new and beautiful places where many Manitobans haven’t experienced. He felt gratified to help build up communities, and bring important resource to youth with limited opportunities.

While running basketball camps, Keegan also enrolled in UM’s Indigenous Governance program to learn more about the communities that he was working in. Learning more about residential schools and the 60s scoop increased his motivation to bring positive programming to Northern youth. “To be able to bring something good to the community, something that is going to have a positive ripple effect, is very meaningful,” says Keegan.

While Keegan is currently deciding what is next for Fitness Up North, he remains grateful for the memorable experiences and valuable learning that he gained throughout his entrepreneurial journey.

The President’s Student Leadership Program (PSLP), Manitoba’s premier leadership program, has opened applications for its fifth cohort of exceptional post-secondary students.

Selected participants in this immersive, fully-funded program will have many opportunities to develop their leadership skills and competencies. These students will directly engage with mentors and an exclusive network of leaders in the province.

Since 2019, the James W. Burns Leadership Institute has been committed to shaping the next generation of leaders within and beyond the walls of UM. The program focuses on leadership challenges and issues in society today. Experiencing a breadth of contexts, from the non-profit sector and labour relations to justice and healthcare systems, PLSP participants learn the essence of what it means to be a leader in any career path.

Applications for the President’s Student Leadership Program are now open. The deadline to apply is February 19, 2023. Twenty-five students will be selected for the fifth cohort of the program, which begins with the ‘core week’ in mid-June 2023. PSLP applications are open to eligible students from all major post-secondary institutions across Manitoba, with 70 percent drawn from UM.

Meet the following PSLP graduates of the fourth cohort (2022). These outstanding individuals are redefining what it means to be a leader today and in the future.

Samuel Ogunsola, Doctor of Philosophy in Physiology and Pathophysiology

Participating in the PSLP had a monumental impact on Samuel Ogunsola’s education. He explains how the program has advanced his skillset: “The PSLP provided me with a platform to learn from great leaders in Manitoba, which has helped me expand my professional network, understand the practical applications of leadership, and build lasting relationships.”

As Ogunsola finishes his PhD, he looks forward to applying his skills and PSLP experience to a leadership role in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company. For Ogunsola, being a leader also means always learning from his community and using his abilities to create innovative solutions to problems affecting those around him.

The program helped him gain a greater appreciation for sustainable community-based projects, and he has since founded two organizations: Food and Genes Initiative and Impact Leaders Connect.

Erin White, Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology

“It is important to give back to the communities that have helped us get to where we are today,” says Erin White. The program has set her up to do so with a project true to her roots.

One of White’s community-based projects centered on creating a clothing closet at a school in the area of the city she grew up in, from which community members could access winterwear. “Being able to supply children and their families in my community with warm clothing was an overwhelmingly rewarding experience,” she says.

Deidre Dewar, Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resources and Indigenous Business Studies

Partnerships that Deidre Dewar has made with community leaders have been an invaluable part of her PSLP experience. With diversity at the forefront of successful leadership, Dewar’s experience connecting and exchanging ideas with others has allowed her to understand leadership in many ways.

“Our work

taught me the value of cultural inclusivity in a community and acquainted me with different cultural customs,” says Dewar. It also encouraged her to set career and personal goals most important to her, which has helped her self-confidence grow as she takes the next steps in her future.

Dewar will be joining the workforce while pursuing her master’s degree in business administration. With this career path “I want to pay it forward and use the knowledge I’ve learned in PSLP to help other women achieve their professional and academic goals,” she adds.

Applications for the President’s Student Leadership Program are now open and close on February 19, 2023. Apply today!

The fourth cohort of the President’s Student Leadership Program (PSLP) recently completed their 2022 summer community leadership projects. A fundamental experiential learning element within the program, the projects allow participants to gain hands-on experience in project design and implementation, working in diverse interdisciplinary and multi-level (diploma to PhD) teams. Providing a deep level of engagement, the projects immerse participants in a complex learning environment; working with local organizations or independently to tackle current social issues and aim to make a positive and lasting impact in the community.

Throughout the summer, the team offered the opportunity for passersby in high-traffic areas to connect anonymously and spontaneously with a caring and empathetic stranger. With a quick prompt or a simple hello, individuals were invited to share the good, the difficult and anything in between with these team members. In a total of eight languages, A Listening Ear provided a source of informal support to nearly 400 people throughout the summer. An online services directory was made available with information on resources throughout Winnipeg for those in need of professional or social services.

The Bridge 204 project aimed to unify and bond diverse cultures with knowledge, understanding and inclusivity through sharing information about the significance of different cultural celebrations in Winnipeg. The team worked in collaboration with the René Deleurme Centre, which serves individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. René Deleurme Centre and Bridge 204 identified key stakeholders through studying the community demographics focused on cultural and religious background information. Based on this information, Bridge 204 created eight infographics of cultural and religious days observed or celebrated by community members: National Indigenous Peoples Day, Red Dress Day, Diwali, Ramadan, Black History Month, Kwanzaa, Truth and Reconciliation Day, Orange Shirt Day and Lunar New Year. The goal was to raise awareness and educate the public about the significance of cultural and religious days for those who reside in their shared community.

The team used effective communications to help provide clothing security to the community, establish a good relationship with school staff and other community resources to optimize their contributions and raise awareness of the needs facing students and their families. The team and the school were overwhelmed by the positive response and intend to continue to hold an annual donation drive.

Through a partnership with Mount Carmel Clinic (MCC) the Wellbeing4Winnipeg (W4W) team addressed MCC’s need to create a safe space to empower community members in the North End to discuss barriers of accessing mental health services in Winnipeg. W4W developed a partnership agreement that provided a detailed description of the project’s intent and values, ownership and control of knowledge, and consent protocols to engage in consultations with community members. The team facilitated four community engagement sessions with participants currently using programs provided through MCC. Information collected from all the sessions was then gathered to create a final report for MCC. The knowledge and findings from this work, which are currently under review, belong to the community and will inform future actions of the MCC

Md Nazim Mahmud. The University of Manitoba, Doctor of Philosophy in Education

The project aimed to share the stories of immigrants within Manitoba who are faced with several challenges and lived experiences that Manitoba residents more generally do not necessarily understand and may not be aware of. Without Borders was designed to bring their stories to the public in a creative way, allowing participants to be a part of the process. Through participants’ perspectives, the focus was on breaking down barriers such as discrimination, racism and misperceptions that immigrants are unjustly subjected to. In collaboration with other organizations, the stories are shared on the team-created website.

Open to students from all faculties and Manitoba post-secondary institutions, the President’s Student Leadership Program (PSLP) is Manitoba’s premier leadership program. The program is funded through a visionary investment from Power Corporation, Canada Life and IG Wealth management to create the James W Burns Leadership Institute at the U of M. Selected students are funded through a fellowship to participate in the program.

Applications for the next cohort of the President’s Student Leadership Program will be open in January 2023 and close on February 19, 2023.

The Burns Leadership Institute is pleased to announce the fourth cohort of the unique in Canada President’s Student Leadership Program (PSLP) at the University of Manitoba (UM). 20 students were selected for this year’s cohort, studying in 15 different disciplines and across four levels of postgraduate study including diploma, bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. They represent postsecondary schools across the province including the University College of the North, the University of Winnipeg, Red River College Polytechnic and the University of Manitoba.

Participants are selected based on demonstrated leadership experience in their community or student life, dedication to learning from multiple perspectives, and commitment to applying their learning to positive change in their future careers. A PSLP fellowship fully funds their participation in the program.

The students have just completed the program’s core week, an immersive learning experience involving workshops, site visits and community building. The participants heard fascinating talks with senior Manitoba leaders including Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman [BA(Adv)/96], CentrePort Canada President and CEO Diane Gray [BA/93, MPAdm/96], Winnipeg Boldness Project Director Diane Roussin [BSW/96], and President and CEO of Economic Development Winnipeg, Dayna Spiring [BA/98, LLB/01]. They visited the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation with UM Elder-in-Residence Norman Meade [ExtEd/88]. Students also participated in leadership workshops with Cate Friesen [BMROT/84] (The Story Source), Keren Taylor-Hughes [BA/85] (Agile Change Consultant), Rob Nickerson (Rob Nickerson Improv) and Asper professor Dr. Lukas Neville (Negotiations for Emerging Leaders). These components and others serve to enhance and strengthen PSLP fellows’ skills and knowledge, while broadening their leadership networks and community of practice.

“The PSLP is committed to developing Manitoba’s future leaders by challenging them to collaborate across disciplines, backgrounds, life histories and worldviews, and to think critically about solutions to complex problems,” said Dr. Suzanne Gagnon, who developed the curriculum and leads the program through her mandate as Director of the Burns Leadership Institute. “We are grateful to the community leaders who bring their experiences, challenges and leadership journeys to light to our students through talks and mentorship. We look forward to more such engagements through the coming year with some of Manitoba’s most inspiring leaders, be it in business, education, technology, non-profit, manufacturing, and more.”

The Burns Leadership Institute was created in 2018 with a mandate to launch the PSLP as a pan-provincial leadership program for rising leaders in postsecondary education in Manitoba. Located in the I.H. Asper School of Business. The Institute also serves as a support for curriculum development in leadership to other units across the university, and hosts three leadership seminar series open to the broad UM student body: Leadership for our Times: The Critical Issues Series; Leadership Lunch and Learns; and the Leadership Research Masterclass series.

Dr. Silvestre transitions into this new role as Dr. Gady Jacoby, the School’s current Dean and CPA Manitoba Chair in Business Leadership, embarks on a new position as Dean of the School of Economics at the College of Management Academic Studies in Rishon LeTsiyon, Israel. Dr. Jacoby, originally from Israel, has been a faculty member at the Asper School of Business for close to 20 years and served as the Bryce Douglas Professor in Finance, Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Programs), the School’s Acting Dean, and for the past three years as the Asper Dean.

Dr. Silvestre comes to this appointment with extensive Asper leadership experience. He is currently the Associate Dean, Strategic Partnerships & Administration; Director of the Transport Institute; Acting Department Head, Business Administration; CN Professor of Supply Chain Management; and Professor of Supply Chain Management.

He joined the University of Manitoba in 2016, having previously held the position of Research Chair and Associate Professor in Sustainable Supply Chains and Innovation at the University of Winnipeg. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Silvestre spent 13 years in industry leadership positions, most recently in a large multinational company operating in the energy sector.

While serving in his administrative roles at UM, Dr. Silvestre has been responsible for partnership development, AACSB accreditation management, strategic planning and strategy execution, and resource planning and budget management. He has spearheaded the development of a new Master of Supply Chain Management, which will welcome its first cohort this fall.

Dr. Silvestre’s research expertise is multidisciplinary and focuses on global supply chain matters. As an internationally accomplished and well-cited researcher, he disseminates his work through peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, conferences, presentations, and reports. His commitment to the profession is demonstrated by serving on multiple editorial boards and as associate editor for several journals.

Dr. Diane Hiebert-Murphy, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) announced the appointment today in an official message to Asper Faculty, Staff and Students. She noted that with Dr. Silvestre’s strong academic record and administrative achievements, the Asper School of Business will continue to excel under his leadership.

“I would like to thank Dr. Silvestre for his willingness to serve as Acting Dean while we engage in a process to identify the next Dean of the Asper School,” said Hiebert-Murphy. “I look forward to working with him to advance the interests of the I.H.
