Grace Elendu, a criminology major in the Faculty of Arts, earned an Undergraduate Research Award (URA) and learned valuable skills through 16 weeks of mentorship.

During the URA, Elendu conducted research on restorative justice models and practices, drawing comparisons to traditional justice systems. Her work also delved into Indigenous water laws and responsibilities, where she explored the reverence for water as a sacred entity and the vital role Indigenous women play in its protection. This immersive research experience not only deepened her understanding of the intersection between academic inquiry and real-world challenges but also enriched her overall university journey. Elendu plans to carry this knowledge into her future legal career, approaching her work thoughtfully and fairly while keeping people and their experiences at the forefront.

In the summer of 2024, Elendu worked under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Woolford, professor and head of the Department of Sociology and Criminology. Dr. Woolford is an Emeritus of the College of the Royal Society of Canada, Fullbright Scholar and former President of the International Association of Genocide Scholars. His research focuses on themes of power, resistance, justice and destruction.

We spoke with Elendu about her URA experience:

What research did you conduct?
Elendu: I focused on researching restorative justice models and practices, comparing them to traditional forms of justice. Restorative justice emphasizes healing, accountability and community-based approaches, which often align with Indigenous worldviews but it’s important to note that they are not the same. Additionally, I explored Indigenous water laws and responsibilities, learning how water is viewed as a sacred entity and how Indigenous women are central to its protection. Both areas of research highlighted how traditional and Indigenous practices offer meaningful alternatives to mainstream systems.

What made you decide to apply for an URA?
Elendu: I wanted to gain hands-on research experience and learn from a professor in a way that went beyond the classroom. The URA felt like a great opportunity to dive deeper into topics I’m passionate about while building skills for my future. Additionally, it will strengthen my academic profile for applying to law schools.

Was there anything that surprised you during the research process?
Elendu: I was surprised by how much I learned from talking and connecting with people, especially Elders and knowledge holders. Attending a residential school survivor event and listening to Elder Betty Ross share her story was incredibly eye-opening. It taught me that research is not just about books and articles—it’s about listening and engaging with lived experiences.

What did you learn from the URA experience? How has it enriched your university journey?
Elendu: The URA taught me how to think critically, manage my time and communicate my ideas succinctly. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the connection between academic research and real-world issues. This experience has made my university journey feel more meaningful, and it’s shown me how research can create positive change.

How do your studies in the Faculty of Arts complement your research activities and your future career goals?
Elendu: My studies in criminology and psychology help me understand how people behave and how justice systems work. This connects to my goal of becoming a lawyer; it gives me the tools to think carefully about legal issues and how they affect people and communities. Through my research on restorative justice and Indigenous practices, I’ve learned how justice can be about healing and accountability, not just punishment. I plan to use this knowledge in the future as a lawyer to approach my work in a thoughtful and fair way, ensuring I keep people and their experiences at the forefront.

The URA is an incredible opportunity for students interested in conducting research to spend 16 full-time weeks from May to August under the mentorship of a professor of their choice. It offers many benefits: building valuable research skills, expanding your academic network and a $7,000 monetary award.

Applications for the 2025 URA are open! Visit the Undergraduate Research Awards webpage for more information on the application criteria and guidelines. There are over 50 Faculty of Arts researchers willing to take on an undergraduate student this summer.

LJ Fulugan, an anthropology honours student in the Faculty of Arts, gained invaluable experience during their 16 weeks of mentorship with the Undergraduate Research Award (URA).

During this immersive program, Fulugan delved into archival research across various collections in Winnipeg, honing their research skills and gaining a deeper understanding of their discipline. Not only did the experience offer academic enrichment, it also allowed them to better understand themselves, revealing their strengths and areas for growth.

In the summer of 2024, Fulugan worked under the supervision of Dr. Lara Rosenoff Gauvin, an associate professor in anthropology and co-chair of the Respectful Rematriation and Repatriation Ceremony. The RRRC involves returning Indigenous Ancestors and Belongings – that were taken and/or held by the university without consent – to First Nations, Inuit and Métis descendant communities. Dr. Rosenoff Gauvin’s research centers on the knowledge, practices and rights of survivors of violence, conflict and forced displacement.

We spoke with Fulugan about their URA experience:

FACULTY OF ARTS: What research did you conduct?

FULUGAN: I engaged in archival research at collections throughout Winnipeg in service to the Respectful Rematriation and Repatriation Ceremony. My research was conducted to understand UM’s harmful and wrongful acquisition of human remains and followed the public apology made by President Michael Benarroch in July 2024, which I was also able to be a part of. This apology was made to descendant Indigenous communities whose Ancestors’ remains and belongings were wrongfully accepted and stewarded by UM.

FACULTY OF ARTS: What made you decide to apply for an URA?

FULUGAN: I was initially planning to graduate from my program after four years and immediately move on to graduate school, but I realized that trying to finish my undergrad as fast as I could wasn’t a good way of making the most out of the university experience (and would be detrimental to my mental health). I thought the URA would be a helpful experience before grad school and my would-be supervisor, Dr. Lara Rosenoff Gauvin, encouraged me to apply.

FACULTY OF ARTS: Was there anything that surprised you during the research process?

FULUGAN: Understanding research as work! I loved all the parts of doing research but doing it within the context of a paid position was new.

FACULTY OF ARTS: What did you learn from the URA experience? How has it enriched your university journey?

FULUGAN: I think that the URA helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses—what worked for me and what didn’t. Being able to dedicate the summer to honing in on these things while engaging in meaningful work was invaluable. For example, I had no trouble with doing the work but learning to balance my life as a student researcher and as a human being was something that I had to get used to. Since a lot of research involves just thinking things through in your head, it can be difficult to stop and take a break. I’m glad that the URA taught me the skills to navigate these kinds of problems, which I wouldn’t have known about without undertaking the experience.

FACULTY OF ARTS: What advice do you have for other students who are considering applying for an URA?

FULUGAN: You don’t necessarily need a plan set in stone; the goals of my project and what I did changed over the course of the summer. Just find something in your field that you’re interested in, approach a knowledgeable professor about research they might be doing that complements this and ask how you could get involved. Professors are people too!

FACULTY OF ARTS: How do your studies in the Faculty of Arts complement your research activities and your future career goals?

FULUGAN: I hope to continue working with heritage in the future, and the Department of Anthropology’s rematriation is vital to addressing harm and moving forward in a good manner. I felt that I had a good idea of what to expect based on what I had learned in my courses because the professors I’ve had approach their work genuinely and are eager to help their students.

The URA is an excellent opportunity for students interested in conducting research to spend 16 weeks full-time from May to August under the mentorship of a professor of their choice. It offers many benefits: building valuable research skills, expanding your academic network and a $7,000 monetary award.

There are over 50 Faculty of Arts researchers willing to take on an undergraduate student this summer.

The dedication to assisting students with their writing has been a long-standing commitment for Kathy Block, a St John’s College fellow.

From 2008 to 2024, Kathy coordinated the Academic Learning Centre’s (ALC) Writing Tutor Program. In this role, she mentored peer writing tutors who assisted students, helping them enhance their writing skills and build confidence through one-to-one support with assignments.

The efforts of the peer writing tutors have culminated in Kathy’s current research project, which focuses on the Course-Based Writing Tutor Program. Through this program, tutors are integrated into specific undergraduate classes, scaffolding the writing process for students.

In her current project, Kathy seeks to understand undergraduate students’ perspectives on academic writing and their perception of the ALC writing tutors as part of their development.

Kathy’s research goal is to gather student feedback for the Writing Tutor Program, thereby improving services for students campus-wide.

As Kathy reflects on her experiences at the ALC through her research project, she is eager to hear from students. Students interested in this research project can contact Kathy at WTPresearch@umanitoba.ca.

Students looking to work with a peer tutor can find more information on the ALC website. Faculty, instructors, and students can also contact the ALC at academic_learning@umanitoba.ca.

The first Sunday of November is always a special time for the St John’s College community. It’s a time when we bestow honorary degrees in recognition of those who have made significant contribution to both St John’s community and the country. It is also when we celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates as well as our scholarship and bursary recipients.

For the 2024 convocation on November 3, SJC is proud to recognize Rt Rev. Helen Kennedy, Dr. Evelyn Forget, and Mr. Jim Ripley. Each of these individuals has had a significant impact on our community, whether as students, on the Council, or in our chapel.

Dr. Evelyn Forget – Honorary Doctor of Canon Law (honoris causa)

The Professor of Economics and Community Health Sciences is grateful for the recognition of the research she has conducted throughout her UM career. As a researcher examining the health and social implications of poverty and inequality, and as a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an Officer of the Order of Canada, Dr. Forget is being recognized for her efforts and petitions to the Federal Government in favor of Guaranteed Basic Income for all Canadians.

In talking with her about what this recognition means, she notes how significant SJC has been in her career.

“It’s always nice for people to recognize the work that you are doing. I’m also very conscious that the work we do as researchers is very collaborative and being recognized for my work and for having worked with many St John’s fellows is special.”

Evelyn would like to thank SJC Chancellor, Bishop Geoffrey Woodcroft for his support throughout the years on many projects. More generally, she is grateful for the colleagues and students she’s had the pleasure of working with.

Rt. Rev. Helen Kennedy – Honorary Doctor of Divinity (jure Dignitatis)

From UM student to former Council member, Helen Kennedy, Bishop of Qu’Appelle, has made her impact on the College in many ways.

As a Council member who participated in St John’s residence renewal and is committed to the well-being, support, and theological education of young people in managing ministries at the diocesan level, Helen is honoured to receive this recognition.

“I’m very flattered and grateful for the College. This honour is more than just an award to me; a College is a place of learning, and it’s helped me become the Bishop I am today.”

In her work to become a Bishop, Helen expresses her thanks to former Bishop of Rupert’s Land Don Phillips, former SJC Warden Chris Trott, and her husband for their constant support throughout the years, which helped get her where she is today.

Mr. Jim Ripley – Honorary Fellowship

The highly respected lawyer with TDS is being honoured for his more than 25 years of service to the College on Council, and his many contributions to the College.

The College graduate from 1976 was an exceptional Council member, offering critical guidance on many issues. His contributions allowed Mr. Ripley to make a difference in the College community to what it is today.

In catching up with Jim to hear his excitement for November 3, he thanks a few people for helping him get involved.

“I want to thank Bernie Beare for asking me to be involved. He’s a wonderful person.“

“Thank you to St John’s for this award and recognition, and the people currently involved in the College for designating me as an honorary fellow.”

In addition to these honorary guests who will be recognized on Sunday, November 3, we also recognize St John’s College student members who will receive various scholarships and bursaries supported by our SJC alumni and community.

These scholarships and bursary recipients include UM students from faculties across campus, including science, art, and engineering. As part of the College membership, these scholarships are one of many opportunities available to students on campus.

The Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources student studying for his master’s in microbiology felt isolated when he arrived in Canada. He did not know what to expect but was excited to get started.

“When I first arrived in Canada, I felt alone. I didn’t have any friends or know where to go on campus; I was just trying to figure out my way.”

Since arriving in Canada in September 2023, Rei Shibue has stayed in St John’s residence, where he’s been able to be close to his classes and build friendships that have helped him find his home away from home.

“For the first while in the residence, I kept to myself. I didn’t talk much, ate alone in the dining room, and attended classes. Over the last year, though, that’s changed significantly.”

As Rei continues his studies in microbiology, where he is investigating microbes in the Arctic Ocean, he also finds his community in St John’s residence at monthly events and has become a residence don on the student support team.

“Attending events and getting involved in the residence has helped me meet some of my closest friends.”

“It’s the community I needed outside of class to feel like I’m home.”

Looking to make a difference in the residence, Rei knew he wanted to get involved on the dons team to help students navigate the problems he once faced when coming to Canada.

“Being a don allows me to continue building relationships in the residence while giving back to the community and the students here.”

As the dons prepare to welcome more new students into the residence in Winter 2025, Rei has found being a resident to be rewarding and fulfilling in more ways than he could imagine.

“I’m grateful to be a part of this team and community, which has given me so much.”

Since her bachelor degree in science, Grace Okunnu has come a long way.

As she completes her first year at the Max Rady College of Medicine at the Bannatyne campus, she reflects on the journey that has gotten her to where she is today.

From the beginning of her journey at UM, Grace was introduced to St John’s college by her older sister who was also involved at the college. She explored the benefits of the student membership, academic support, scholarship opportunities, and the sense of community she felt while studying for her undergraduate degrees.

“St John’s has been helpful throughout my academics. I studied at St John’s when I was on the Fort Garry campus, and now, even at the Bannatyne campus, I can still be involved with SJC and their scholarship opportunities.”

As a 2023 SJC scholarship recipient, Grace remains connected to SJC, regardless of being on the Bannatyne campus.

She adds, “It’s been a very unifying and community-building environment. I made new friends during my undergraduate degree at St John’s, with whom I’m still connected today.”

As she moves forward into her second year of medicine coming up, Grace looks to pass on the lesson she has learned to fellow students to never give up after the first try. “If you don’t succeed the first time, it doesn’t mean it won’t happen.”

This year, the college was proud to present $200,000 worth of scholarships to students from faculties including, Science, Arts, Engineering, Asper School of Business, Nursing, Health Sciences, Indigenous students, and University 1 students, to name a few. </alt_description>

St John’s college scholarships and bursaries provide University of Manitoba students the drive to achieve academic excellence as they look to continue their studies and move forward in their respective careers.

Last year, the college was proud to present $200,000 worth of scholarships to students from faculties including, Science, Arts, Engineering, Asper School of Business, Nursing, Health Sciences, Graduate Studies, Law, Indigenous engagement, and University 1 students.

Our recipients go through their own academic journeys to receive these awards every year. Today we are proud to highlight two student stories about what these scholarships mean to them.

Doris Goubran, who joined the college from high school, is studying in the Faculty of Health Sciences. She is working towards her bachelor’s, hoping to get into the College of Nursing. In a competitive field like Health Sciences, Doris not only received gratification from her scholarship this year but also proved to her that she has what it takes to follow her nursing dreams.

“It encouraged me to keep doing and to pursue my medicine dreams that I hope to accomplish one day. Being in a competitive faculty is super nerve-racking and intimidating, but my hard work has paid off, and this scholarship proves that to me.”

Like Doris, Catherine van Reenan, a Ph.D. student in the religion department, received not only gratification from her scholarship recognition but also the opportunity to travel abroad. After hearing the news of her scholarship, Catherine can now attend one of her bucket list conferences in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she will have the opportunity to meet professionals whom she has looked up to since beginning her post-secondary education.

“People who have written for me for this scholarship gave me validation that I’m meant to be pursuing my Ph.D. and will now help me in attending a conference that I’ve always dreamed of attending. It’s a niche to my field, and I’m excited to learn from inspiring people.”

The college would like to thank its generous donors for their continued support towards these scholarships and bursaries.

Apply for our final round of scholarships closing July 31.

UM students must be a college member to apply.
