The dedication to assisting students with their writing has been a long-standing commitment for Kathy Block, a St John’s College fellow.

From 2008 to 2024, Kathy coordinated the Academic Learning Centre’s (ALC) Writing Tutor Program. In this role, she mentored peer writing tutors who assisted students, helping them enhance their writing skills and build confidence through one-to-one support with assignments.

The efforts of the peer writing tutors have culminated in Kathy’s current research project, which focuses on the Course-Based Writing Tutor Program. Through this program, tutors are integrated into specific undergraduate classes, scaffolding the writing process for students.

In her current project, Kathy seeks to understand undergraduate students’ perspectives on academic writing and their perception of the ALC writing tutors as part of their development.

Kathy’s research goal is to gather student feedback for the Writing Tutor Program, thereby improving services for students campus-wide.

As Kathy reflects on her experiences at the ALC through her research project, she is eager to hear from students. Students interested in this research project can contact Kathy at WTPresearch@umanitoba.ca.

Students looking to work with a peer tutor can find more information on the ALC website. Faculty, instructors, and students can also contact the ALC at academic_learning@umanitoba.ca.

The Price Faculty of Engineering has an incredibly diverse student body who all have the same end goal, to graduate with an engineering degree. Along this journey, students branch onto different paths depending on their passions and skills. There are five different programs with multiple options to focus and specialize in for each of them. Some gain work experience by participating in Co-op while others develop hands-on experience by participating in technical competition teams.

Some of the Student Ambassadors in the Faculty were asked to share what their path has looked like and where they want to go next:

Josh (he/him)

Josh will be going into his final year of biosystems engineering. His dream job would be to develop technologies for rehabilitation therapy. Josh believes that acquiring an engineering degree will open lots of doors and there is constant growth and development in the field. Engineering shapes the world around us! He has loved being involved with a variety of teams/clubs throughout his degree. He is part of UM Earth which has allowed him to apply his skills in real world scenarios. He has also built life-long friendships that will stretch out into his professional career.

Samantha (she/her)

Samantha will be going into her third year of electrical engineering, working towards a dream job that develops solutions and the implementation of renewable energy. She loves the collaborative atmosphere and personal challenges that engineering has to offer as well as its habit of constantly pushing the boundaries to what humans can achieve. Samantha enjoys the student life within the faculty and particularly enjoys volunteering at the Engineering Orientation (EngO) to welcome new students into the faculty. If she didn’t go into engineering, she would probably be in visual arts!

Kanwar (he/him)

Kanwar will be going into his third year in computer engineering, with the goal of becoming a cyber security specialist against AI generative. His favourite thing about engineering is the hands-on experience of turning a small idea into reality. Kanwar believes in a balance between maintaining good grades and applying knowledge in the practical world. He also thinks it’s healthy to keep up a social life and attend different events in the faculty.

Messe is going into her fourth year in biosystems engineering. Her favourite thing about her chosen field of study is that biosystems engineering drives innovation and sustainability, playing a crucial role in building a more resilient and sustainable future. She values the people that she has met throughout her degree and loves sharing her knowledge and connecting with people about biosystems engineering as it is not a widely known field. Her dream job is being a Project Manager that works on environmental projects around the world.

Abigail (she/her)

Abigail will be going into her fifth year of biosystems engineering, specializing in biomedical studies. She is passionate about clinical research and would love to pursue a career in studying biomaterials, medical imaging and technology. Her love for research stems from the idea of contributing to important scientific advancements that will help those in need. She believes that there is something for everyone in the broad field of engineering and that engineers work towards making society, our world and environment a better place. The highlight of her degree has been her research and she has contributed to the development of antiviral facemasks in response to the pandemic and has had the opportunity to operate and interact with cutting edge technologies.

One of Abigail’s greatest motivations since entering engineering has been contributing to the 30 by 30 goal for women in engineering. She believes it is vital to create safe and inclusive spaces for all students and professionals. As a member and outreach executive in the Women of Manitoba Engineering Network (WOMEN) student group, she is passionate about supporting and promoting diversity in engineering and changing the current statistics of women in engineering roles.
