Last time, Narda Mc Master celebrated graduation, it was for her friend, Tricia Ng Wai as she completed her Applied Business Analysis program package. This time, the two friends from Trinidad and Tobago will celebrate her completion of the same journey.

Mc Master is one of 146 grads completing intensive program packages including Applied Business Analysis, Applied Human Resource Management, and Applied Business Management. At our Fall 2024 Graduation on Nov. 7, Extended Education also congratulates an additional 237 grads from 15 part-time programs including Artificial Intelligence: Machine Learning Solutions, Business Analysis, Management and Administration, Human Resource Management, and Program Development for Adult Learners.

“Tricia came here to do it first and then she encouraged me to do it,” says Mc Master, who earned her ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) professional accounting designation and her MBA before coming to the University of Manitoba.

“In school, I didn’t like math and then, one explanation turned on a switch for me. That was it. I picked it up. I have an appreciation for it now,” says Mc Master.

In her job as a Manitoba budget analyst, attained after her program’s industry placement in a CPA firm, she says uses much of what she learned in her Business Analysis studies. “I am excited I can push forward as a consultant, bringing much more value, information and knowledge.”

Taking career to the next level

In some way, we are all business analysts, Mc Master says. “When I learned about the tasks of Business Analysis, I realized I had done this before, but the program brought some structure to it. I definitely recommend it because it awakened me to the skills required, that I had to develop them further and take my career to the next level.”

She says the lectures were great, and she appreciated the extra knowledge and real-world experience shared by the instructors who were also business analysts.

For those considering going back to school, Mc Master says, “My advice is just to be open to the experience itself, meeting new people and learning about new cultures, embracing the differences you encounter.”

And for those still looking for their next job, she says, “Don’t give up. Just keep on going. Keep pushing. It will happen soon.”

Siddh Sheth earned his Micro-certificate in Artificial Intelligence: Machine Learning Solutions.

Siddh Sheth

Siddh Sheth googled AI and Machine Learning programs near him, and the first thing he found was Extended Education’s Micro-certificate in Artificial Intelligence: Machine Learning Solutions.

“So I said, why not? I wanted a program from a good school and UM has a good brand. I wanted my employer to sponsor my learning. And they paid for it,” says the UM alum who also holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Now he’s celebrating his graduation from the program.

A great experience, a unique program

“What a great experience. I wasn’t expecting such a unique program,” Sheth says. “I was quite impressed. As a business systems analyst at New Flyer, I can apply what I have learned. And my director and manager are quite impressed too.”

As AI is becoming more prominent, Sheth says, “I recommend this program for anyone. Because everyone should have a bit of knowledge on AI and Machine Learning. AI is growing a lot. In the coming years, a suitable knowledge of AI and Machine Learning may be one of the basic things if you want to advance your career.”

Advanced technical knowledge and programming is not required for the program, he says. “You can do this with just a little knowledge of computers.”

Optimizing, making better

At work, Sheth says he will now work on various AI projects, automating the routine and tedious tasks so staff can focus more on speaking with customers. The process will become optimized, better.

“I was amazed by the knowledge I gained. Now I can link AI to a business application to get rid of a business problem. It is a very good way to impress the boss.”

After a few years since his degree, Sheth says, “My brain needed to warm up to learning.” But he recommends the experience and notes how it will contribute to his career goals as an entrepreneur, or as he says, “ a businessman.” Currently Sheth consults to help people get jobs in IT and he also has his own podcast helping others in their job journey.

For those going back to school after time away from their studies, he advises, “Just enjoy your course. Make connections. Be flexible. Talk less, and listen more to people.”

Rokeep Olanrewaju completed his degree in International Business in his native Nigeria, but it wasn’t until he came to UM for Applied Business Analysis that he had the opportunity to work with people from beyond Africa.

“It is exciting and refreshing to know people who come from different backgrounds. It is like I traveled over five countries without leaving Winnipeg,” he says, noting he met Chinese, Indian and Arab people, among others. “I am excited to learn how different cultures can come together to achieve the common good.”

It’s all about teamwork, he says. “I remember in my last semester, I had to lead the team. I was so angry things were not getting done. Then I tried to see things from their end, to work together with the team. You must know people think differently, have a common goal, and work together.”

Celebrating graduates

Olanrewaju is attending grad with his wife and daughter, and a friend. He is one of 150 grads completing intensive program packages including Applied Business Analysis, Applied Human Resource Management, and Applied Business Management. Extended Education also congratulates an additional 123 grads from 15 part-time programs including Business Analysis, Management and Administration, Human Resource Management, Program Development for Adult Learners, and Artificial Intelligence: Machine Learning Solutions.

Olanrewaju says, “This is a milestone for me. I have acquired knowledge and experience I will use. I worked as tech support in Nigeria, supporting software development teams. I learned a lot here, new skills and tools to prepare me for the next phase in my life. I know about different cultures and how to talk to different people.”

He completed his Industry Placement at GHY International, helping the customs broker to register its clients onto a new government system. A friend told him about the program, and he recommends it to others.

“I want to be a Business Analyst. I so much enjoy the tasks and challenges,” he says, noting he has incorporated BA principles into both his personal and professional tasks, he is studying for his first professional certification, and he plans to keep learning. “They day you stop learning is the day you start dying. The more I study, the more I feel like I am living.”

He shares his advice with future students. “What you put your mind to, you can achieve. Studies can be intense but don’t get distracted. You will be fine. The resources are there to help you succeed.”

Annie Osondu Iheke in her cap and gown at grad.

Annie Osondu Iheke

Annie Osondu Iheke is excited about graduation. “I worked so hard for it,” says the Applied Human Resource Management grad attending her celebration with her brother and his wife. “My studies helped me to understand Human Resources in a different light.”

For the Nigerian/Ghanian with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, and administrative work experience, coming to study at UM and gain Canadian work experience with an Industry Placement was a dream come true. “The instructors were so positive and encouraging. They brought out the best in us. We were not sure in the beginning, but they showed us how things are done here.”

She loves HR because it has to do with people management. “A manager needs to know the weaknesses and how to bring out the best in their staff including providing a training plan to teach them what they need to know. Recruitment is about more than qualifications. It is identifying the best person. You can train a potential fit.”

At home, she says, managers did not have budgets for training and had to make a case to get funding, but here she sees a lot of training is going on. “It is standard here. It is compulsory at every level. There are funds dedicated for it. Here training is very important.”

The lessons she learned about communication style and business culture stay with her. “How to relate with coworkers here, I use that every day. It is different at home.”

She reminds the next group of students to connect with instructors. “The instructors are amazing. They are there to help you. Don’t feel shy to ask questions. They are always there for us, to point us in the right direction.”

Paola Uzgame at graduation.

Paola Uzgame

Applied Business Management grad, Paola Uzgame is attending graduation with her husband. “I feel enthusiastic about what comes next,” she says.

In Colombia, she had a degree in Marketing and Advertising, and worked in retail. Here, she completed her Industry Placement at Loblaws. “That was a huge benefit for me.”

She finds Winnipeg quiet and more peaceful than her former big city. “I love the campus. It is beautiful.”

When her temporary position at Loblaws is over, she plans to apply for new opportunities in an office environment. “It is very important to find a stable job. Not any specific position. What matters is that I learn, and I enjoy it. That is most important.”

Of the Canadian workplace, she says, she has learned she must adapt. “I recommend this program, and UM. It is very important to come with an open mind, to take advantage of the knowledge the instructors have. Don’t waste the opportunity.”

For Laura Marquez, completing the Applied Business Management program package with Extended Education was a good step towards a new life.

“This Management and Administration certificate will make a difference. Taking a program in English from a recognized university shows commitment and opens doors,” says the graduate from Columbia.

On Oct. 23, Extended Education celebrated our Fall 2023 Intensive Program Package Graduation recognizing 112 students including Marquez who completed these packages. We also congratulate our additional 83 Fall 2023 graduates from our part-time programs.

Marquez had two bachelor’s degrees, in economics and in business, and experience as a sales coordinator and sales administrator before she started her studies at UM. She found a similar role in her current job at Pattison Outdoor.

“I love it. I am a quick learner. I have worked in a sales-driven environment. I have the skills to perform well. The culture and way of doing business here is similar.”

She says completing her program while she worked was a big accomplishment. “It was a pretty good thing to study, to apply my knowledge in Canada and make a smooth transition.”

She appreciated the tools her program gave her including a pronunciation clinic and writing and grammar workshops. “It can be challenging to think and express yourself in a proper way in a new language.”

And when she was about to say goodbye to her classmates by hugging and kissing them, as people warmly greet and say goodbye to each other in her native Columbia, some asked what she was doing.

“Personal space is more respected here. Especially after COVID. It is an unspoken rule,” says Marquez, who celebrated her graduation with her husband, Camilo, with plans to go out to dinner with his family afterwards.

Some of her fellow graduates were also from Columbia, and they will keep in touch, to share their common experience of things that differ compared to how they are done in Canada. For example, in Columbia, there is no Thanksgiving. They have Little Candles Day and Novena celebrations leading up to Christmas and they are a big deal in the offices.

“It is a time to feel homesick, so it helps to have them around,” she says.

Oluwapelumi Oyekunle celebrates her graduation from Applied Business Analysis with her parents: her mom’s friend and her husband.

Oluwapelumi Oyekunle, Applied Business Analysis

When Oluwapelumi Oyekunle was considering taking her career in a new direction by studying Business Analysis at UM, her friends asked her why she would not simply stick with what she knows. After all, with her accounting degree, she was good at numbers.

“No one understood,” says the Applied Business Analysis program package graduate. “But I am so excited about it. I feel like I have accomplished something different. When you set your mind to something, there is nothing you can’t achieve. Push your dreams. Do what you like to do. Just do it. Don’t wait.”

Oyekunle had been working for a global financial company back home in Nigeria when she found herself leading the introduction of a software system. “I was sort of doing business analysis. But I was not used to the terms. I was lost.”

Then she started her program.

“Now I have the terminology and I know when to use it. This program introduced me to lots of people from all over the world. It gave me this confidence. I am so grateful for this experience.”

Currently, she is working at Assiniboine Credit Union, and working on her BA certifications.

“I definitely want to go into business analysis. I like numbers but I also like people. I like to talk. I want to find solutions.”

Celebrating graduation with her will be her mom’s friend and her husband. Oyekunle stayed with them when she first came to Winnipeg. “They have been my biggest support system.”

She has also recommended her program to her boyfriend, in Nigeria.

Daiane Waldrich Barbosa celebrates her graduation from Applied Human Resource Management.

Daiane Waldrich Barbosa, Applied Human Resource Management

Daiane Waldrich Barbosa didn’t want to take another business course. After all, she had two university diplomas in business and related work experience in her native Brazil.

“I was trying to find something different. I had been working in banks. I had my own consulting company. But I was missing something, the people aspect. I am totally sure I took the right course,” says the Applied Human Resource Management program package grad.

“I learned lots about people and behaviour in the work environment. Here, people are more interested in the soft skills. Here is more respectful. Training and development were the most interesting to me. I learned how to develop people and make things better for them.”

Now she is working at RBC Dominion Securities, in the Operations department.

“I understand employment standards because of the program. It helped me to know how to behave here. It was an intense experience, but it was definitely worth it. It was so rewarding to get to the end and think, I made it. I really made it.”

Her husband, Cleber Barbosa, will celebrate graduation with her. “He was super supportive while I studied and worked full-time. He suffered everything with me.”

Graduation is a special milestone, she says. “No one in my family has experienced anything like this. My parents are very proud. This was something I was dreaming of a few years ago. You just need to believe and dream about it and things will work out for you.”

Waldrich Barbosa plans to keep learning.

“I am not sure of my next steps. Maybe financial certifications, or another course. I believe we can never stop learning. We have to keep updating ourselves.”

For Applied Business Management grad, Andrea Salas, it’s been a very hectic year. “I’m so ready to graduate,” says the married mother of three from Peru. “It’s been very challenging but very exciting. This is a huge accomplishment. I am very proud of myself and I am so happy my family (parents, husband and children ages 12, 5, 2) are cheering me on… It makes a big impact on my kids. They know their mom has achieved something big.”

A June 12 afternoon celebration, held in University Centre, marked the Spring 2023 graduation of 89 students from the Applied Business Analysis, Applied Human Resource Management, and Applied Business Management intensive program packages offered by Extended Education. An additional 188 students also graduated from Extended Education’s part-time programs including our first micro-credentials.

Salas holds a bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management and an MBA. “Applied Business Management complements the MBA. This program is very Canadian-focused. It’s a very good review of what I learned in my MBA, in English, with a Canadian perspective. It’s the perfect program for me to adapt and make the necessary changes to be successful in the Canadian workplace.”

Her hotel management experience took her to several countries. Then she completed her MBA in Spain and went home to Peru to have her first child and work as a facilities manager. Then she decided to come to Canada. “Life is so different here. I wanted to give my kids a better future.”

Now working as a customer success manager for Manitoba tech-based company, Vexxit, a job that also served as the Industry Placement component of her program package, she says, “I took all my skills and what I learned in my program and it worked out great. I recommend everyone do the placement. It was a great experience. It’s different than being in the classroom. Being in the field, you see how things work.

“An industry placement is an opportunity. You don’t know what will happen next. Put your passion into it. You will see results. It works out. Take advantage of it,” she advises.

Mefua Jemima Lere-Adams (centre) and her fellow grads celebrate their achievement.

Mefua Jemima Lere-Adams

Mefua Jemima Lere-Adams started her intensive program package focused on its practical aspects. “I would say my goal was not to have As. My instructors were amazed and amused. They were vastly experienced. I focused on gaining experience and connections. I would have liked to have done even more teamwork, presentations, practical things,” says the Applied Human Resource Management grad from Nigeria.

As part of the package, Lere-Adams did her Industry Placement with Cisco Canada and says it was “quite an experience” with the Winnipeg and Canadian team, learning with the support of her manager.

“My career goals are to keep growing as a person, to offer value to the community. An HR professional who is well-rounded is more valuable. I think we can leave footprints.”

Lere-Adams hadn’t heard much about Canada before she came to Winnipeg from her native Nigeria. But she was used to finding her way. Her parents had always encouraged her.

“I am very curious as a person. I like to ask questions. I was really hungry to learn what I wanted to do,” she says, noting she had earned a bachelor’s degree in political science, taken human resources courses, explored LinkedIn, conducted informational interviews, and even completed an unpaid internship before a fellow student told her about the UM opportunity that brought her to Canada.

“It was a one-year HR intensive. I didn’t want to go back for a three-year program. I am very excited to have completed it. It’s been a long time coming. I am happy with the support I received. I had great instructors, helpful colleagues (fellow students).”

Her younger brother, Jafe Lere-Adams who is working on his computer science undergraduate degree at UM, and friends will celebrate her graduation with her.

“I recommend the program. It’s good to have some work experience first. That helps so much. It is intensive and you should know the basics.”

Sekinat Mustapha-Sagaya

For Sekinat Mustapha-Sagaya, the highlight of her Applied Business Analysis intensive program package was her Industry Placement. At Loblaw Companies Limited, she says her manager was a really great person who played a huge role in her finally being hired by the company as a financial analyst. She starts soon.

“That’s connection,” says the married mother of two young boys from Nigeria, noting how excited she was to complete her studies and attend her grad.

“It’s very exciting for me. The courses were packed with lots of information. It was nice to get it done.”

Mustapha-Sangaya discovered Extended Education’s intensive program packages thanks to a Facebook ad. She emailed UM for information and chose Applied Business Analysis to complement her economics and MBA degrees and banking work experience. As branch manager, she had to do many things including managing staff, meeting sales targets, and ensuring quality customer service.

“This was a way for me to specialize in just one thing. I wanted a particular role to grow in, to become a resource person advising how to be more efficient. It was a perfect fit for me.”

She’s recommended her studies to friends, noting “It’s called APPLIED Business Analysis for a reason. My previous experience played a strong role in my understanding the information in context, the ways to get things done more efficiently, and get stakeholder support.”

While she didn’t make it into the program the first time she applied, she says everything has worked out for the best. “I love working in the financial industry. I have worked with figures for all of my career. The Business Analysis path is unlimited. I am preparing to take a certification exam and develop to become a financial business analyst. I believe I am right where I am supposed to be.”

For Applied Business Analysis (ABA) grad, Claudia Martinez, celebrating her graduation was a moving and emotional experience for both her and her family.

“My husband was so proud of me. My oldest son – he is attending actuarial studies at UM – finally saw the results of my effort. It was not easy. It has been something challenging for us. We have been waiting for this moment. It was a beautiful night,” says Martinez.

The Nov. 28 evening celebration, held in University Centre, marked the graduation of 156 students from the ABA, Applied Human Resource Management, and Applied Business Management intensive program packages offered by Extended Education. An additional 52 students also graduated from Extended Education’s part-time programs.

Claudia Martinez celebrates her ABA grad with her husband Javier Cardenas (right) and son David Cardenas.

Claudia Martinez, Applied Business Analysis
“The program really performed for me. I was looking for a program to complete me, to open a future pathway here,” says the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who worked at a bank back home in Columbia and completed an Industry Placement with Cambrian Credit Union. “I worked on projects to make processes more efficient and more profitable for companies. Now I am working as a Business Analyst (BA) for Bison Transport. I am so lucky.”

The best part of being a BA is the opportunity to improve and create new things, she says. “I help people to understand what they need. I help create new services to increase profits, grow the company and fulfill their goals.”

A friend recommended the program to her, and she also recommends it. “With ABA, you have a good opportunity to find a job and to grow. Business Analysis is not something monotonous. You need to think, speak with others, find new ways to do things differently. You can also add it to your resume. It helps.”

During her studies, she met others in the financial services and accounting industries and appreciated the support of her instructors and Extended Education staff. “I had good conversations with them about the future. Their advice was so useful for me, as a new person here. They were so supportive.”

Martinez encourages everyone to continue their lifelong learning. “I would recommend you get out of your comfort zone. Do something different. Find something you enjoy. Maybe you don’t know what that is yet. Find opportunities.”

Theodora Vavrinek celebrates her AHRM grad.

Theodora Vavrinek, Applied Human Resource Management
Applied Human Resource Management (AHRM) grad, Theodora Vavrinek was also excited to celebrate her graduation.

“I am more than happy to have come this far. Here I am today. I am so full of joy. It was worth the journey,” says the graduate from southern Nigeria.

A friend referred her to the program after applying to it herself. In Nigeria, Vavrinek had earned two degrees: a BA with a major in religion and a minor in business administration, and an MBA in business administration. She had also worked in the financial industry and was a bank manager.

“I managed people and liabilities. I met targets,” she says. “I was interested in studying human resources because I did a bit of HR in my previous job experience. This was an awesome program. When it was done, I didn’t want to believe I was finished so soon.”

Now Vavrinek will pursue her professional designation with CPHR Manitoba and look to work in HR recruitment, training and development.

“I like to help people, to know where they are, how they need help, and to see what I can offer.”

Vavrinek completed her program’s Industry Placement at Canadian Red Cross. There, in Shared Services, she took part in onboarding and offboarding volunteers and employees, and she met a lot of people. “I would like to thank them for the opportunity. I would also like to thank the program’s instructors and staff. This program opened me up to the Canadian workplace style and laws, so I know how to address the needs of people and match their skills and expectations with jobs. I am better able to advise.”

For anyone considering going back to school, she says, she definitely recommends it. “It’s never too late to add something to what you already know. If you are eager to learn, give it a shot. You will get a lot out of it.”

She also recommends the AHRM program, and has encouraged two friends to apply. “It is definitely worth the money, time and resources.”

Chunbo Liu was looking for a university certificate to complement the two degrees she already holds when she discovered Applied Business Analysis. Now she is looking forward to celebrating her graduation and starting her career.

Liu is one of over 500 graduates from 22 different programs planning to join us on June 9 as Extended Education holds our first in-person convocation since before the pandemic. The event will also be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend. From certificate programs like Business Analysis to intensive programming options like Applied Human Resource Management, Extended Education graduates are earning UM credentials including certificates to prepare them to move forward in their lives and in their careers.

To join her at the event, Liu plans to invite her language partner, a law student she met through the Language Partner Volunteer Program at the UM English Language Centre. Through their weekly conversations, they have become very good friends.

“I am so excited. For me, this is a brand-new start,” says the graduate from Shanghai, China. “Previously I had bachelor and masters degrees. I didn’t need a degree program. I was looking for a certificate.”

With a background in computer science and information technology, Liu says she likes technical things and analysis so Applied Business Analysis was the perfect fit. “It was very intense. I learned a lot. My ideal job is business analyst.”

She especially enjoyed her Industry Placement, an opportunity that had her using the theories and skills she learned in class and applying them to real life. Most notably, she says her Project Management course instructor offered her new perspective. “He enlightened me. I didn’t realize it could be done this way.”

Studying in a new country during a pandemic has been challenging, she says. “You have to adjust and adapt to the local environment. It can be quite frustrating and depressing at first. But if you try to attend events and programs as much as you can, you start feeling better. Especially with the pandemic, it is good to socialize. I had to find a balance between studying and work. It can be challenging to get home later after your job. You can feel sleepy and frustrated but you can overcome. It was all worthwhile.”

Now that she has earned her certificate, she encourages others to continue their education too. “If you embrace change and work hard, you can achieve anything. Find something you are really interested in. Then you will benefit the most.”

After completing her studies online due to pandemic restrictions, Applied Human Resource Management graduate Harinder Kaur can’t wait to check out the UM campus with her classmates before she attends our in-person convocation. As an international student from India, she plans to invite her father to join her for the event. And, of course, she will be celebrating among the friends she made during the program.

“I am really happy to graduate,” says Kaur. “We look forward to seeing the campus and then attending our graduation. Seeing everyone in person really offers a feeling of closeness.”

Of course, even though it was remote, her program was not lacking, she says. “It is everything practical, a totally realistic course that allows you to experience ahead of time what you will experience as an HR professional. I will have so many options after this program. Having it on my resume will help me to stand out and get interviews.”

Kaur had a bachelor of commerce degree and was considering a masters in human resources in India when she discovered her UM Extended Education option online. “A masters takes two years. This covers the knowledge and skills and understanding of the HR details in one year. It has opened the door for me in many areas of HR. Now, I can do any job, any HR function.

“If you are really passionate about HR and HR functions, take this course.”
