Donors are generously helping UM students that are most in need

The holiday season is a time when we think about how we can help others in our community. It is also the time when the UM Student Food Bank is at its busiest. The number of students using the Food Bank has more than doubled. Last year, the Food Bank saw an average of 300 students monthly – now they see over 600!

When a student is struggling to pay for tuition, rent, and books – sometimes they have little left over to put food on the table.

“With grocery prices and inflation on the rise, students like me often have nowhere else to turn for help with food and toiletries,” says Zilei Yu, a student in the Faculty of Engineering. “My worrying over basic necessities kept me from focusing on school.”

Donations to the Food Bank not only help put essentials like non-perishable food into students’ cupboards but also personal hygiene items, like toothpaste, shampoo, and soap. Access to these common items has a pronounced impact on a student’s life.

“I remember the first time I visited the UM Student Food Bank. The people there were so kind and devoted to getting me the help I needed. I am still thankful,” says Yu. “Donations from people like you help the Food Bank keep pace with growing demand. I know from personal experience that your gift will have a lasting impact on UM students.”

Anyone wishing to help our students succeed can make a financial donation online, including easy options for one-time and monthly donations. Contributions via payroll for UM faculty and staff can be made here. Food donations can also be dropped off at many locations across the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses.

Nourishing Dreams: UM Student Foodbank helps hundreds of students every month

November 28th is Giving Tuesday. A special day for Canadians to join hands and contribute to charities and organizations close to their hearts. One cause that urgently needs attention is the University of Manitoba Student Food Bank, a lifeline for many of our students.

In the face of an unprecedented surge in demand, the Student Food Bank is now assisting more than 600 students every month. Organizers believe these students, driven by dreams and aspirations, should not be hindered by basic food needs and that their success should know no barriers.

The generosity of people within the UM community and outside of it, whether through donations of non-perishable food items, monetary gifts, or volunteering, can make a profound difference in a student’s life.
