Environmental Health and Safety encompasses a wide range of programs aimed at preventing injuries, illnesses, and environmental damage. It involves the implementation of policies, procedures, and training to manage hazards and promote safe practices. The University of Manitoba’s Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO) is committed to fostering a safe and healthy environment for all staff, faculty, and students. In line with this commitment, EHSO is excited to provide enhanced safety training modules available through UM Learn, as well as an enhanced incident reporting system accessible via their website.

New UM Learn Training Modules

To ensure that everyone on campus is equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain a safe environment, EHSO has developed comprehensive training modules available on UM Learn. These modules cover a wide range of topics, including:

Environmental Health and Safety Basics

Biological Safety Training

Chemical Safety Training

Asbestos Awareness

EHS for Students

EHS for Supervisors

Office Ergonomics

Lab Safety for Non-Lab Workers

Visitor Safety

Course description of these and other offering from EHSO can be found in the EHS Safety Training Manual. These training modules are designed to create a comprehensive and robust safety culture. By completing these courses, participants will be better prepared to identify and mitigate potential hazards in their respective environments. See the Self-Registration tab in UM Learn to find offerings from EHSO.

In addition to the new training modules, EHSO has also enhanced its incident reporting form, which is accessible through their website.

This user-friendly platform allows for the timely and accurate reporting of any safety-related incidents or concerns. Key features of the incident reporting system include:

Ease of Access: Reports can be submitted from any device with internet access, ensuring that incidents are documented as soon as they occur.

Confidentiality: The system ensures that all reports are handled with the utmost confidentiality, protecting the privacy of those who report incidents.

Submitted reports are immediately forwarded to the appropriate EHSO team member to facilitate prompt investigation and response. EHSO collects and analyzes data on reported incidents, helping to identify trends and areas for improvement. The combination of comprehensive training and efficient incident reporting is crucial for maintaining a safe campus environment.

The University of Manitoba’s Environmental Health and Safety Office is dedicated to enhancing campus safety through education and efficient reporting systems. The new UM Learn training modules and the incident reporting system are essential tools in this mission. By staying informed and proactive, we can all contribute to a safer and healthier campus community. Find information on all EHS programs at https://umanitoba.ca/environmental-health-and-safety/.

Although tutors often intuitively use effective strategies during their appointments, Tutor Training can significantly improve the way a tutor thinks and interacts with students.

Tutor Training facilitator and Academic Learning Centre instructor, Tim Podolsky, says, “Getting training is the best way for tutors to improve their knowledge and understanding of best practices when it comes to tutoring.”

Participants benefit by improving critical thinking and communication skills. In addition, says Podolsky, “Participants develop an awareness of the role of a tutor, the phases of a tutoring session, using scaffolding strategies and promoting independence, increasing meta-cognition, working with students from different cultural backgrounds, and promoting academic integrity.”

Tutors who attend training and complete the assigned activities also earn recognition on their Experience Record.

This spring, the Sexual Violence Resource Centre (SVRC) is relaunching the Responding to Sexual Violence Disclosures training for UM staff and faculty members. The new 2.5 hour workshop will be offered to UM community members in both in-person and online (via zoom) formats. Sexual violence is an umbrella term representing a broad range of inappropriate behaviours including sexual assault, sexual harassment, and stalking. Sexual violence impacts individuals of all genders, identities, abilities, and backgrounds, and all members of our community should be prepared to help support someone disclosing an experience of sexual violence.

Initially offered in 2017, the updated Responding to Disclosures workshop continues to be a valuable opportunity to help faculty and staff members prepare for a situation in which they receive a disclosure of sexual violence. Responding to Disclosures also provides information on recent changes that were made to the University’s Sexual Violence Policy , including the new requirement for supervisors to refer the individual disclosing to the SVRC.

“As the university has returned to in-person activities we want to ensure members of the UM staff and faculty community have access to this important training,” says Bre Woligroski, Sexual Violence Resource Centre Coordinator.  “Whether the disclosing person experienced violence in person or online, we want all staff and faculty to feel equipped to respond in a survivor-centered and supported way.”

Designed to give staff and faculty the knowledge and skills to respond to disclosures in a compassionate, supportive, and consistent way, the workshop walks participants through key elements and guidelines for responding to a disclosure of sexual violence and making appropriate referrals. While the workshop does include a brief overview of the university’s Sexual Violence Policy, the focus of this workshop is on a supportive and survivor-centered response to the person disclosing, focusing on their needs while providing options for support and information. The workshop is facilitated by staff from the SVRC as well as other support areas at the University.

“Many who have these experiences first turn to someone they trust to tell their story. How that first disclosure is received can have a huge impact on the individual’s healing and how they move forward,” states Emily Livingston, Sexual Violence Education and Program Officer at the SVRC. ”Taking this training is a proactive way for staff to feel prepared in responding in a caring and supportive way should a disclosure arise.”

Spring registration is now open for an in-person session happening at the Bannatyne Campus as well as a virtual session open to staff from any campus. Staff and faculty interested in attending a workshop are encouraged to sign up through the Learning & Organizational Development website.

The University of Manitoba has embarked on a journey to refresh our Aurora Banner experience and develop a new foundation that will support new capabilities for automation, usability, mobility and integration. The Registrar’s Office has three Banner 9 coaches (Angela, Nataliya and Taylor) to guide you through the new design. Orientation will be in two phases: general navigation presentations for all current Banner users, and hands-on workshops for scheduling and updating student records.

By now, everyone should have received an orientation invite. If you haven’t been invited and think you should have been, or if you have any questions, please contact the coaches at Aurora.Coach@umanitoba.ca. For more information, visit the Banner 9 website. Aurora Finance training will be separate from the Registrar’s Office training, please visit the LOD for more information.

The upgrade has a new look and feel; it is a web-based design that allows users to easily access, view, and update information. It is important for all staff to become comfortable navigating the new design. We want to assure you that even though the design has changed, your processes have not.

Orientation sessions are offered at both the Fort Garry campus and Bannatyne campus. General navigation orientation at the Fort Garry campus started on October 23 and hands-on workshops begin November 7. General navigation and hands-on workshops for Bannatyne campus are held October 29 to November 2. The targeted go-live date for the upgraded Aurora system is November 26.

It is important to note that in order to hit the go-live date, the system must be shut down. Students and staff members will not be able to access certain systems from November 21 at 5pm through to November 25 at 12am. The systems that will be unavailable during this time are listed below.
