Results of the Campus Commute Survey inform strategic planning around transportation related infrastructure, education and peer-based programs in support of climate action, sustainability and wellness goals.

This year’s Campus Commute Survey includes questions to better understand our greenhouse gas emissions from commuting and air travel and inform future strategies for the UM Climate Action Plan.

The UM Climate Action Plan is a framework to help us halve our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and become carbon neutral by 2050. In 2019, 29% of our total emissions were generated from transportation related to commuting, business and research travel, and fleet vehicles.

We learned a lot from our experiences during the pandemic, including what gaps exist around digital supports for learning, research, training and working.

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is a triennial survey that helps the University of Manitoba plan and institute new initiatives for students, making their experience even more positive. Information gathered in the 2017 edition helped UM institute a new Spiritual Care unit, enhanced substance use harm reduction, improved sexual violence prevention initiatives, enhanced accessibility to Student Counselling Services, expanded the range of student services available on the Bannatyne campus, and more. This year’s edition opened on February 13 and students have until April 24 to have their voice heard. 34% of eligible students have already participated.

The 15 largest Canadian research-intensive universities also participate in the survey allowing UM to measure its responses against those of similar-sized institutions. The large scale of the survey enables UM to connect with counterparts across the country to share best practices and discuss trends emanating from the survey results.

As an added bonus, all students who complete the survey by April 24, will have the chance to win one $1000 cash prize, one $500 cash prize, one of three $250 prizes, one of five $100 UM Bookstore gift certificates, and one of ten $50 UM Bookstore gift certificates. Students just have to complete the survey and they will be automatically entered into the draw.

Links to complete the survey were sent throughout the past month. Students should check their email to complete the survey and have a chance to win one of the prizes.

On February 13, the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) was sent to the inboxes of all first and final-year undergrad students. The data collected will help shape the initiatives and plans of the university in the years to come. The survey takes place every three years and has had a direct impact on the student experience.

“We learn how students spend their time on and off campus, and get their opinion about what works and doesn’t at our university,” says Randy Roller, executive director of the Office of Institutional Analysis who administers the survey. “Having this information really helps us improve life for students at UM.”

The 15 biggest research-intensive universities in Canada participate in the survey, so the data from UM can be measured against similar institutions across the country. They also give the Office of Institutional Analysis a window into many aspects of student life and experience that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to get.
All students who complete the survey by April 24, 2020 will be entered into a draw for a one $1000 cash prize, one $500 prize, one of three $250 prizes, one of five $100 UM Bookstore gift certificates, and one of ten $50 UM Bookstore gift certificates. There is also an additional early-bird draw for a $500 prize for those who complete the survey before March 4.

Check your UM email to complete the survey.

Basement floor uneven? Basement walls leaking? House foundation shifting? We need your help!

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba is seeking volunteers to participate in a survey of residential homes in the City of Winnipeg to observe cases of foundation, structure and basement floor movements associated with seasonal movements of foundation soils. The survey includes allowing researchers to document conditions (cracks in concrete walls, cracks in drywall, windows or doors that have difficulty operating, elevation changes, drainage, etc.) on the exterior of the home and optionally in the basement of the home.

If you are interested in participating, please email housestudy@umanitoba.ca with your contact information and the research team will contact you to arrange a time for a site visit.

The information gathered in the survey will be combined by postal code region to anonymize the results. No personal information about the participants or addresses are included in the survey reporting. The results will be included in an educational report for homeowners to understand why movements occur in homes in Winnipeg due to seasonal changes in soil conditions. The report will also highlight what symptoms to look for in determining if movements are occurring. The report will outline best practices for homeowners to follow regarding management of their home and property to minimize and limit potential movements. There is no cost to participate in this study and all participants will receive a copy of the final report at no cost.

Please note that you will be required to accompany the researchers at all times when on your property which may require approximately 30 to 45 minutes of your time. A waiver will be provided when the researchers arrive and will be required to be signed by all participants to authorize the researchers conduct the study.

Email housestudy@umanitoba.ca to participate or for more information.
