It’s time to register for Summer Term and there are a few things you need to know.

REGISTERING

Registration access times for students at the Bannatyne and Fort Garry campuses will be available in your Aurora Account on March 17.

To access your registration time:

Log into Aurora.

Select the “Open Registration Dashboard” card.

Select ‘Registration Time and Status’.

Choose the Academic Term from the dropdown menu to see your registration access time.

Once it is your registration date and time, you will only have that day to register. Beginning March 28th at 1:00 p.m. CST, you will have 24/7 access until the last date to register.

If you can’t access your registration, make sure you are accessing Aurora during your registration access time.

Once registration opens, you will have 24/7 access to register for courses in Aurora until registration closes.

You can familiarize yourself with the process of registering for courses on Aurora by consulting the written instructions on the Registration Steps webpage and the video tutorials available on the Aurora How-to’s webpage. You can find more resources

HOLDS

It’s a good idea to check if you have any holds or if your student status prevents registration. Make sure you clear these up before your date to register.

REVISION PERIOD

In summer term, the last date to drop a course and the last date to add a course are the same date. To help prepare you, please take note of these important deadlines found on the Important Dates and Deadlines page.

WAITLISTS

Waitlists for Summer Term will open on March 28th at 1:00 p.m. CST. It is very important that all students claim their UM email account and keep it in good standing in order to receive Waitlist notifications. Once open, Waitlist Notifications are enabled 24/7.

If you want to switch course sections, please contact your Advisor. You may not be able to switch sections when a course has a waitlist.

If you miss the deadline to register for a waitlisted course you will need to re-register for the waitlist.

To learn more about waitlists, you can consult the Waitlist webpage.

For further questions, contact an academic advisor.

TUITION

Since courses span different parts of the term, there are two tuition fee deadlines for Summer term. The tuition payment deadline for courses beginning in May is May 21st 2025. This includes both May-June and May-August courses. The deadline for July-August courses is July 16 2025.

To keep track of the dates and deadlines for Summer term, see the Important Dates and Deadlines webpage.

A message from Laurie Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students):

For those of you studying over Summer Term, we are beyond excited to welcome you back! We have missed your energy on campus these past two years and are looking forward to seeing you in person.

Whether you are a new student joining us for the first time, or a continuing student looking to get ahead in your degree, there are some important things to know for the return to in-person classes.

COVID-19 Protocols

Wearing a mask is still required for Summer Term. KN95 masks are highly recommended, but 3-ply medical masks (ASTM Grade 2) will be the minimum acceptable. UM will supply all necessary masks.

Masks must be worn in all indoor spaces, including all common spaces, classrooms, labs, doorways, corridors, workspaces, libraries and study spaces. Masks are not required when you are alone in a closed-door space, when consuming food or beverages in a location designed for food consumption (no food or drink is allowed in study spaces), or any outdoor space.

Proof of vaccination is no longer required on UM’s campuses for Summer Term, however, vaccination is still strongly recommended as the best way to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.

To ensure the continued safety of our campus community, please stay home when you are sick and work directly with your instructor to seek reasonable accommodation.

Supports

University is an exciting, challenging time. If you are a new student, a current student, or are taking a break from your studies for Summer Term, there are resources available to support you. The Student Supports web page features a diverse range of resources to help you succeed, including those focused on health and wellness, academic success, and supports for everyday life.

On that website you will also find specific resources for Indigenous students, international students, new students, graduate students, and military members and dependents. I encourage you to check it out!

Weekly Wednesday Conversation Group for International students

The International Centre is hosting a weekly conversation group for international students during the summer and all students are welcome. This is a great opportunity to learn about Canadian culture and how to adapt to your new home, get tips for making connections on campus, and practice your Canadian “small talk”. The sessions are every Wednesday from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.. Meet at the International Centre, Room 541 UMSU University Centre, and set off to explore campus with new meeting locations every week.

Manitoba International Student Health Plan

International students, I encourage you to attend the International Centre’s Manitoba International Student Health Plan information session on May 12, where you will learn about your health coverage and how it works before you need it.

Stay active with Rec Services

The International Centre is hosting a weekly conversation group for international students during the summer, and all students are welcome.

The weekly sessions are a great way for both international and Canadian students to meet new people, make friends and develop conversation skills.

The sessions are hosted by Praise Oluwafemi, who is a student and also a program assistant at the International Centre.

She was inspired to start the group because she started as a student at UM during the pandemic.

“Unfortunately, like many students, I have not had the opportunity to be in school for in-person classes,” she says. “Now finally having the opportunity to come to school in person especially during summer, it just seems like a great idea to tour the campus to find new places to meet and have conversations.

“I am sure that both returning and new students would benefit from going around the campus since there have also been some renovations that have been done during the pandemic,” she adds.

Both international and domestic students will get something from the conversation group.

“International students should attend the conversation group because we will be talking and learning about Canadian culture and the experiences other students, both domestic and international, have gone through,” says Oluwafemi. “We will also talk about tips for adapting to their new home and how to manage the culture, language, and lifestyle in Canada.”

“Domestic students should also join the sessions because it is an opportunity to meet with people and learn about diverse cultures and languages,” says Oluwafemi. “Additionally, for students who are coming back from online schooling during the pandemic to in-person classes, we will talk about how to adjust to the change and how to create a good work–life balance during the summer.”

The group meets every Wednesday during the summer from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The group starts at the International Centre (541 UMSU University Centre), and walks to a location on campus, giving students the opportunity to become familiar with campus at such a beautiful time of year. All students are welcome.

Have you considered taking courses in the summer? It’s a great way to lighten your course load during Fall and Winter Terms, to get ahead in your program, or maybe focus all of your attention on one course at a time. Summer Term courses can contribute to your overall academic success.

Why take courses in the summer?

It’s a great way to provide opportunities for learners with different learning styles, such as students who may have more success if they focus on one course at one time.

Students who are parents, work or have other personal obligations throughout the Fall and Winter Terms may be able to use the time to obtain elective or required courses.

Summer programming may provide opportunities for earlier engagement or obtaining entrance requirements for an academic program.

Summer Term is an opportunity to attain additional or supplemental requirements such as minors, teachables or other options.

By taking advantage of flexible learning options, like Summer Term, students are empowered to complete their program in a timely manner so that they can take the next steps – whether that be further education, employment or whatever is next for them.

Plan your year with help from an academic advisor

The 2019 Summer Term preliminary schedule is now available for viewing at Class Schedule Term – Aurora. Check out which courses are offered this summer to see if one might work with your program and contact an academic advisor to help with planning your overall academic year.

Be sure to check back for additional courses, updates to existing courses, instructors and classroom assignments.

Registration opens March 25, 2019.
