Nobel Peace Laureate Jody Williams is the University of Manitoba’s 2018 Robert and Elizabeth Knight Distinguished Visitor and at a series of events she will explore the question of what role women have in the promotion of peace with justice and equality.

Williams was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for her efforts to ban antipersonnel landmines and for her defense of human rights. The University of Manitoba’s Arthur V. Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice is honoured to have her deliver the 15th Sol Kanee Lecture on Peace and Justice.

The event series begins on Wednesday, October 24 at 2 p.m. in Marshall McLuhan Hall (UMSU University Centre, Fort Garry campus) with an open Q & A session moderated by Peace and Conflict Studies Graduate Programs Director, Dr. Adam Muller.

Williams will then meet with local women peace-builders and community activists in a session moderated by Dr. Anna Snyder, contributor to the development of the UM/UW Joint MA in Peace and Conflict Studies.

On Thursday, October 25, Williams will deliver the 15th Sol Kanee Lecture on Peace and Justice, The Nobel Women’s Initiative: Women Supporting Women in the Pursuit of Peace at 1:30 p.m. at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

UN Landmines Treaty Earns 1997 Nobel Peace Prize

After a decade of work in the 1980s trying to stop US military involvement in El Salvador and Nicaragua, Williams was asked to create a civil society campaign to ban antipersonnel landmines. Beginning in early 1992 with two non-governmental organizations and no other staff but herself, Williams oversaw the growth of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines to over 1,300 organizations in 95 countries working to eliminate the weapon.

In an unprecedented cooperative effort with governments, UN bodies and the International Committee of the Red Cross, she served as a chief strategist and spokesperson for the ICBL as it dramatically achieved its goal of an international treaty banning antipersonnel landmines in September 1997. A few weeks later it was announced that Jody Williams and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines would share the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize.

Human Security, not National Security

Through it all, Williams continues to struggle to reclaim the real meaning of peace, which she defines by human security, not national security. “We must teach ourselves to believe that peace is not a ‘utopian vision,’ but a responsibility that must be worked for each and every day.” For Williams, working for peace requires dogged persistence and a commitment to sustainable peace, with socio-economic justice and equality.

Since January of 2006, Williams has served as the founding chair of the Nobel Women’s Initiative. Along with sister Nobel Laureate Dr. Shirin Ebadi of Iran, she took the lead in establishing the Initiative. The Nobel Women’s Initiative uses the prestige of the Nobel Peace Prize and the influence and access of the women Nobel Laureates themselves to support and amplify the efforts of women around the world working for sustainable peace with justice and equality.

The Mauro Centre and St. Paul’s College are honoured to host the 2016 Sol Kanee Lecture on Peace and Justice, with guest speaker Dr. Oscar Arias, 1987 Nobel Peace Laureate and President of Costa Rica from 1986-1990 and 2006-2010.

His lecture is titled: Seeking the Hero of Heroes: Human Development as the Key to Peace

With violence dominating our headlines and growing xenophobia fueling new populist movements, it is easy to lose confidence in humanity’s ability to achieve progress – but the choice between violence and nonviolence is ours to make. The unprecedented resources of the international community are sufficient to address the poverty that sparks the flames of violence, if we prioritize peace over profits.

Oscar Arias, two-time President of Costa Rica and 1987 Nobel Peace Laureate, holds international stature as a spokesperson for the developing world. Championing such issues as human development, democracy, and demilitarization, he has travelled the globe spreading a message of peace and applying the lessons garnered from the Central American Peace Process to topics of current global debate.

The New York Times reported that Oscar Arias’ “…positions on Central American issues have become the standards by which many people in Congress and elsewhere have come to judge United States policy.” In a similar way, he has come to take a leading position in international discourse.

After leaving office in 2010, Dr. Arias has dedicated his time to the Arias Foundation for Peace and Human Progress.

The lecture series is named in honour of a prominent Canadian, Sol Kanee (1909-2007), who was devoted to the cause of peace and justice. Kanee had an unparalleled record of service to Winnipeg, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1977.

Date: Wednesday, September 28, 2016

Time: 1:30 p.m.

Location: MPR, 2nd Floor, University Centre, Fort Garry campus, University of Manitoba

This event is free and open to all.

Sponsored by the Richardson Foundation, and partners Rotary International (Zones 24 32) and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the Mauro Centre presents the Annual Sol Kanee Lecture Series featuring distinguished leaders in the field of peace and justice.

The Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair (BA/03, LLD/02) was appointed Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, which looks at those affected by the Indian Residential School system, in June 2009. He was Manitoba’s first Aboriginal Judge and the second Aboriginal judge in Canada. He was appointed Associate Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Manitoba in March of 1988 and to the Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba in January 2001, and Co-Commissioner, along with Associate Chief Justice A. C. Hamilton, of Manitoba’s Aboriginal Justice Inquiry. In 2000, Justice Sinclair completed the Report of the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Inquest, into the deaths of 12 children in the pediatric cardiac surgery program of Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre in 1994. He was awarded a National Aboriginal Achievement award in addition to many other community service awards, as well as eight Honorary Degrees for his work in the field of Aboriginal justice.

Mr. Soloman (Sol) Kanee (1909-2007), in whose honour the lecture series is named, was born in Melville, Saskatchewan in 1909. A barrister by profession, Kanee co-founded one of Winnipeg’s largest law firms – Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP (originally called Shinbane Dorfman Kanee). When his father passed away, Kanee took over the family business, becoming the President of the Soo Line Flour Mills Ltd. and later became the Director of Kanee Grain Co. Ltd, and Chairman of the Canadian National Mills Association.

Throughout his lifetime, Kanee had an unparalleled record of service to Winnipeg and the greater community. He was President of the Canadian Jewish Congress from 1971 to 1974, Director of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, and a Director of the Bank of Canada for 17 years (the longest sitting member in the bank’s history). Kanee was Chair of the University of Manitoba Board of Governors and chair of the Board of Directors of The Royal Winnipeg Ballet (which he helped to gain international acclaim).

On the national and international scenes, Kanee was a confidant of prime ministers and presidents, and a passionate advocate for the state of Israel. Kanee received countless awards and honours for his local, national and international service that helped to bridge gaps between peoples and generations. In 1977 he was inducted into the Order of Canada and the Order of Manitoba. The University of Manitoba awarded a Doctorate of Laws on Kanee (1974), and was inducted posthumously into the Winnipeg Citizens Hall of Fame in 2009. Dubbed “Citizen Kanee” by the Winnipeg Free Press, Kanee was a man who gave freely of himself and will be remembered, as President Ernest Sirluck described him upon conferring an Honorary Doctorate, as “an exemplary citizen.”
