Hosna Banihabib’s undergraduate training in urban planning and design taught her the power of listening—to place, to people, to history. She took that forward in her planning for graduate studies, and she found she was drawn to Dr. Stephane McLachlan’s work in the Department of Environment and Geography at the University of Manitoba (UM), which focuses on environmental justice, environmental health, and Indigenous food sovereignty.

“As someone of Azerbaijani heritage from Iran, I feel a deep kinship with Indigenous communities whose languages, lands, and traditions have shaped their identities for generations,” says Banihabib. “In Iran we also have different ethnicities, and when I was doing my projects in urban planning and design, I always focused on what minority or vulnerable groups would be affected by my design as an urban planner. That’s when I dived into political ecology which evolved into environmental justice.”

Now at UM, her research is focused on helping Indigenous communities navigate the mining industry. To support her in her project, she applied for and received the Berkes Graduate Scholarship. She was nervous to apply at first, but in going through the process, she discovered what mattered most was not whether or not she received the scholarship, but what the impact of her work was going to be on the community.

“Receiving the Berkes Graduate Scholarship has been both a profound affirmation of my work and a practical lifeline,” she says. “They saw value behind an idea that a Knowledge Keeper had but didn’t know how to put it into action, and that’s where scholars and the community can come together.”

Her project began by speaking and building a relationship with Walter, the mining Knowledge Keeper in Kenora, on Treaty 3 territory, which is where her project is based. When a mining company wants to begin work in a certain area, they request an exploration permit from the government. Then the government has to share that permit, which includes the details about the location, the project and the mining activity, with the community.

Before any mining action can happen, there is a 30-day window where the public can make comments on the proposal or claim the land as cultural or heritage land. As Banihabib started building trust with Walter, he mentioned that while First Nations communities are aware of these proposals, most of them don’t have the proper time or the platform to react to these activities. With so many proposals coming in, Walter said he was having a hard time managing them and making appropriate claims or comments, which is where Banihabib found an opportunity to help.

“Their decision to trust me with co-creating tools that translate complex mining data into accessible maps and alerts fills me with gratitude and humility,” she says. “Knowing that my skills can ease community planning around resource impacts and support local decision-making makes every long day of this journey worthwhile, and it is an honour to return these results as a gift of respect and partnership.”

Financially, she said the scholarship also relieves the burden of travel, housing, and field‐work expenses. She says that not having to worry about making ends meet allows her to spend more time listening to and addressing the diverse needs of community members affected by mining activities, and to co-design Geographical Information System tools that deliver maps and alerts tailored to those needs.

“This scholarship has strengthened my confidence and resolve,” she says. “It confirms that the community‐based approach I’m championing—rooted in respectful partnerships with Grand Council Treaty 3 First Nation communities—is valued by leaders in the field. I feel empowered to delve deeper, share results in accessible formats, and uphold the principles of Indigenous-led conservation every step of the way.”

What does a future fueled by generosity look like? Here, a legacy of philanthropy is shaping the leaders, innovators and change-makers of tomorrow. Learn how you can get involved.

When Angela Soulsby walks into her new role with Health Canada under Indigenous Services Canada, she carries with her not just a Bachelor of Nursing degree and recently completed NCLEX, but a deep, personal story of healing and hope.

Growing up in an unsafe environment shaped by historical and generational trauma, Angela faced adversity that could have easily derailed her dreams. She later experienced a health care crisis and a violent assault—both stemming from institutional systems that have long dehumanized Indigenous Peoples. Rather than let these experiences hold her back, Angela found purpose in them.

Angela shared with the Canadian Nurses Foundation, “I set my sights on nursing school and challenged myself to learn what it takes to make fundamental changes that will elevate the lives of Indigenous people out of the toxic stress, and destructive physical impacts of Colonial trauma and violence, thus relieving many from chronic diseases.”

At St John’s College, Angela found her safe space while pursuing her dreams of becoming a Nurse.

“SJC provided a place of community and acceptance for me. Regardless of background, I often found gentle spirits with welcoming smiles. It was a safe place to join other students who were also degree-driven and striving to better ourselves and our communities.”

The support from St John’s College became even more critical during challenging moments. When experiencing lateral violence during one school year, Angela found refuge in an SJC study carrel. “It became my safe haven and helped ensure my grades didn’t slip from the added stress.”

Through it all, Angela remained a serious, committed student. But it was the approachability and accessibility of SJC’s support staff that helped her push through the most difficult times. Daily Bread Café, she recalls, became a comforting place to recharge during summer research at the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation or between classes. “SJC took care of its students by providing a discount at Daily Bread,” she adds with appreciation.

Angela was also a recipient of the Alfred H. Shephard Bursary, which played a pivotal role in helping her balance school, life, and motherhood.

“I did my senior practicum in isolated communities up north. I couldn’t come home for three months. The bursary allowed me to afford expensive groceries, access streaming services since outdoor activities were unsafe, and take care of my financial responsibilities back home where my young adult son lived. It relieved financial stress, so I could focus on meeting my degree requirements.”

But perhaps the most lasting impact was the way SJC helped Angela see her own value.

“Being a SJC member and scholarship recipient helped me to see my worth and value as a student and human being,” she says. “Growing up, I did not have a support network. I lacked confidence growing up—I had to be strong which can be isolating. But at SJC, I was around people who were also doing good work and supporting one another. It felt really good to fit in.”

Today, Angela stands as a powerful testament to the life-changing impact of community.

“SJC helped me to believe I was good enough to deserve good things like my Nursing degree. My goals, hopes, and dreams are coming to fruition”

On National Philanthropy Day, all of us at the University of Manitoba want to say THANK YOU to our donors. It is truly remarkable the difference that can be made when individuals, organizations, and communities unite in the spirit of giving. Your generosity is not only making it possible for students to pursue their big ideas but is also helping to promote learning and well-being in Manitoba, Canada and the world.

UM’s alumni and donor community continue to help build brighter futures for all of us. In the past year, over 6,400 donors from 20 countries around the world have been inspired to spark change through gifts to UM, and our endowment fund now sits at over $1 billion. We saw 1,022 people in our community become first time donors, the Isbister Legacy Society reached over 500 members, and our faculty, staff and retirees gave over $490,000.

We are proud to share highlights of how the impact of your giving enhances student experiences, drives innovative research and fosters communities where everyone can thrive.

Enhancing student experiences

At the heart of the University of Manitoba is a commitment to our students, and your generosity has made a significant mark on their lives.

Each year, over $40 million in scholarships, bursaries and prizes are awarded, easing financial burdens and recognizing excellence among our students. This support empowers exceptional individuals like Joel Nichols, who in 2023 became our 100th Rhodes Scholar—the most of any university in Western Canada. Joel, an interdisciplinary artist and the first Rhodes Scholar from the School of Art, exemplifies the talent and potential nurtured at UM through your support.

Your contributions have also aided in our commitment to developing future health care professionals. Through donations, a dedicated $1 million has been allocated for new medical bursaries, which will help medical students pursue their education with lessened financial barriers. This investment not only transforms their lives but also promises a brighter future for health care in our communities.

Since 2018, 83 high school students have received full tuition to attend UM through the Schroeder Foundation Scholarships. Emphasizing education as a pathway out of poverty, these scholarships offer students from challenging backgrounds the chance to pursue higher education with the resources and mentorship they need to succeed.

Experiential learning opportunities have flourished across disciplines, preparing students for the complexities of the modern world. From internships and co-operative education placements to community-engaged learning projects, these hands-on experiences equip students with practical skills and confidence. Thanks to your support, over 40 UM programs now offer experiential learning opportunities where students can apply the skills they learned in the classroom and gain valuable experience. UM alum Melisa Miljkovic, while studying for her business degree, discovered the International Exchange Program, which allows students the chance to study at one of over 60 schools overseas. Thanks to the Hartley T. Richardson International Travel Bursary, Miljkovic was able to attend the University of Plymouth in England for six months, delving into an educational experience that transformed her personally and professionally. Miljkovic graduated on the dean’s honour list with a double major in International Business Studies and Supply Chain Management and Logistics.

Fostering Indigenous excellence and Reconciliation

The University of Manitoba is dedicated to fostering Indigenous excellence and advancing Reconciliation, and your support plays a vital role in this journey.

Students like Tréchelle Bunn embody the impact of these initiatives. From Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, Bunn is a law student, athlete and Youth Chief who founded Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation half marathon. Through programs like the Indigenous Circle of Empowerment, UM supports her journey as a growing leader.

Expanded financial aid has opened doors for more Indigenous students to access higher education and achieve their academic aspirations. Programs like Qualico Bridge to Success assists first-year Indigenous students in their transition to university life, providing mentorship, cultural workshops and a supportive community.

The Access Program also stands as a key program for Indigenous excellence, providing academic, personal and cultural resources. With a team of dedicated advisors, counselors and community leaders, Access students have the foundation they need to thrive, and six Indigenous participants have progressed to medical school, fulfilling their aspirations to serve as future health care professionals.

Investing in exceptional places and spaces

Your contributions have transformed our campus, creating exceptional places and spaces that enhance learning and research.

The new Desautels Concert Hall stands as a testament to this transformation—a stunning venue with state-of-the-art acoustics and architecture. It enriches our cultural landscape, hosting performances and events that bring the community together and celebrate the arts.

The Dr. Gerald and Reesa Niznick Centre, currently under construction thanks to a $5 million gift from the Niznicks, will include a new dental clinic equipped with cutting-edge technology. As the future home of Canada’s fourth-ranked dental program, this facility sets a new standard in dental education and care. Students will receive training with the latest advancements, preparing them to better serve our communities.

Looking toward the future of global food security, the upcoming Prairie Crops and Soils Research Facility will accelerate soil and crop research. By providing advanced facilities for field studies and sample processing, this centre will promote innovation in sustainable agricultural practices, nutrient management and cropping systems. Through this facility, our university can continue to make strides in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Driving research and innovation

Research and innovation are at the core of the University of Manitoba’s mission, and your support has been instrumental in propelling us forward.

UM has received over $450 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation over the past 22 years—the most this foundation has awarded to any Canadian university.

Thomas Rawliuk [BSc(Hons)/22, MA/24] started his academic career by attending Red River College to become a paramedic. After he began working as a medic, he found that interacting with patients made him more curious about human physiology and psychology. Because of this he decided to go to university and to explore these concepts with the goal of someday being able to have a larger impact on people’s lives.

“When I came to the university as an undergrad, I found that a lot of my previous knowledge from college and from high school was all based on the hard sciences like biology, chemistry and physics, which is why I pursued an undergraduate degree in science,” he said. “But while at UM, I started delving into psychology, and I was struck with a moment of realization that I can blend the two concepts together. I ultimately determined that research was the way I wanted to go and that was because I was interested in how the mind and the body connect.”

As Rawliuk continued his education, and ventured into a master’s degree, he discovered that other people were interested in the same thing and that he could use the knowledge he gained as a paramedic and apply it the new knowledge he’d gained throughout his undergrad. He decided to focus his research human resilience, which is the capacity for the body to respond quickly and effectively to mental illness and neurological disease and how it varies across humans.

“My goals are to identify how the mind and body work together to determine our outcomes when in response to stressful experiences or adversity in life and to develop actionable behaviours that optimally preserve and promote resilience,” he said. “Eventually I’d like to develop a research program that aims to use all aspects of resilience to encourage preventive behaviours that delay or stop the onset of disease.”

To aid him in completing his research, Rawliuk applied for and received the 23/24 Faculty of Graduate Studies Research Completion Scholarship. He said this award, and others he’s received throughout his academic career, have helped alleviate financial stress, allowing him to focus more intently on his education and research and ultimately pursue his goals.

“Often when pursuing long-term goals, it is easy to feel isolated, constantly questioning whether one is doing enough. This award is a heartwarming reminder that effort does not go unnoticed within a strong community,” he said. “I am honoured to be recognized for my hard work, and I feel more confident and motivated on this path I have chosen for myself, knowing that I am supported and encouraged by donors to continue learning and discovering.”

Rawliuk has felt firsthand the UM community’s commitment to recognition and encourages other students looking for support to explore the many donor-funded scholarships, bursaries and awards provided through the university.

“If I were to give other students any advice, I would say to not treat scholarships too seriously and don’t approach them as if they’re something to be feared,” he said. “These awards are there to help you get through school, and you may get them, or you may not. But apply for as many as you can and know that the people supporting these awards believe in you and want to see you succeed.”

Tréchelle Bunn [BA(Hons)/23], proud member of Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, started her university career at the University of Calgary, but she had always dreamt of coming back to UM for law school. When COVID happened, she made the decision to transfer to the University of Manitoba and play her last two years of university hockey back home in front of her family and in her community.

“My experience as a student-athlete with UM has been amazing,” said Bunn. “I’ve been involved in a lot of different initiatives, and I feel as an athlete I was able to use that platform with the Bisons to speak to important issues like how I believe Bison Sport, and other university sports organizations, can use sport as a tool for Reconciliation for athletes and their teams.”

She graduated from the University of Manitoba in the spring of 2023 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminology and a minor in Indigenous studies. She is currently in her second year of law school at Robson Hall. She credits UM with being incredibly supportive, encouraging her to uplift her voice to marry together her two passions of sport and academics to create a space for advocacy.

“I think being a student-athlete and using my advocacy efforts of speaking to important issues really played a role in my dream of going to law school,” she said. “I’m so proud to have been a bison and and to be an alum of the women’s hockey team.”

Bunn is also the founder and race director for the Reconciliation Run, which she created as a form of legacy for her grandparents both of whom attended the Birtle Indian Residential School. The Run starts close to the site of the former Residential School, as her grandfather used to tell her all he wanted was to run away from there. This year, the Run has even more meaning for Bunn, as she’s planning to use the funds raised from the race to create The Reconciliation Run Scholarship for Indigenous Student-Athletes.

“I started talking with the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management, as I eventually want to expand the race so that UM students and faculty can have their own Reconciliation Run,” she said. “As we kept talking, I became aware that there’s always so much need for scholarships, especially for Indigenous students. As an Indigenous student-athlete, I was never aware of any scholarships specifically for Bisons athletes, so we identified that as a gap area.”

Bunn said her vision for the scholarship is to be able to support and uplift Indigenous student athletes in Bison Sport and to serve as a recruitment tool for Indigenous student athletes to come to UM. She was also inspired by a quote by former TRC Commissioner Chief Willie Littlechild who said, ‘sport has the power to bring people together and to get people working together, and that’s what Reconciliation is all about’. The first scholarship will be given out this fall.

“My hope is that it really inspires other Indigenous student-athletes to use their platform as a Bisons athlete to advocate for change within their community or to be involved on campus and to really harness the opportunities and resources that we have as athletes to be positive role models for the next generation.”

She said her experience as a student-athlete is taking the lead as she starts shaping her career path, and she is grateful for the opportunities she was given. Now, she wants to do her part to help ensure the next generation of Indigenous student-athletes have that same positive experience and feel supported on their journey. For those thinking about how they can give back, Bunn offers some advice.

“When I started the Reconciliation Run, I had no idea how big it could become and how many different ways it could have a positive impact on others,” she said. “I think sometimes we’re often our own worst critics and our biggest challenges can come from our own mind. But I say be fearless in pursuit of your dreams and passions and goals because if you can dream it, you can do it.”

The importance of scholarships, bursaries, and awards cannot be overstated. They can provide financial stability, reducing the stress and anxiety associated with tuition fees, books, housing, and other educational expenses. Research has shown that when students have their basic needs met, they are more likely to experience improved mental and physical well-being. This can lead to better concentration, higher levels of motivation, and an overall more positive attitude toward learning.

Financial support through scholarships can also help students feel more connected to their educational institution. They may perceive that the institution cares about their success, which can foster a sense of belonging and motivation to engage in campus activities and coursework. They also promote diversity and inclusion by providing opportunities to underrepresented groups. When students from diverse backgrounds have access to higher education through scholarships, it enriches the learning environment for all students and promotes cross-cultural understanding. At the same time, these opportunities ensure that the University of Manitoba remains a hub for world-class talent and a leader in academic achievement.

A very outgoing person by nature, this was one club UM alum Justin Price [BComm(Hons)/10] never imagined he would join.

“I lost my mom when I was 15, a week before Christmas and a few weeks before my 16th birthday,” he said. “We were very close, the whole family was, but I had a bond with her. At the time, I was a teenage boy, an athlete, and I had these preconceived notions about what it meant to be tough. I didn’t cry, and I put up this shield to show everyone how strong I was and meanwhile I’m dying on the inside.”

Price said it was at least a decade until he really started reflecting on how her death impacted him. On the outside, he had graduated from UM with distinction, played sports at a high level and had landed a great job in Toronto right out of school.

“But just because something looks good on the outside doesn’t mean that it is,” he said. “When I had my first son in 2017, he started asking about Grandma Laurie because we have pictures of her in our house. I realized that other than my wife and one other friend that lost a parent I hadn’t talked much about my mom to anybody. Not even my dad or my brother.”

In talking with his son, he realized that one of his blocks to telling his story was a general societal feeling of discomfort around death. He vividly remembers how it felt like the people closest to him were walking on eggshells around him, unsure of what to say or do. He said the longer he went without talking about his mom the harder it became to start, and he decided he wanted to do something to start breaking down some of those barriers for others. So, he created the Laurie Price Memorial Scholarship.

“In my research creating the scholarship and learning about what type of grief support there is out there, I found a massive gap in supporting teens and young adults outside of seeking professional help,” he said. “I know firsthand seeking help is difficult, so I wanted to offer a different kind of support. My hope is that the scholarship not only relieves some pressure for the students but also creates a space for the students to feel comfortable sharing their stories and feel support from someone who has been through a similar experience.”

Payton Slobodian [BA/22] lost her father in a bicycle accident on her first day of grade 10. She said he was an extraordinary dad to her and her sisters and a beloved husband to her mom. She often finds there are no words that can begin to shed a glimpse on the impact that his death had on her, but she always remembers how he taught her how to live life simply and find beauty in the little things.

“When I discovered the Laurie Price Memorial Scholarship, I felt a connection to the criteria of the scholarship, and I knew I had to apply,” said Slobodian. “Because of the scholarship, I was able to complete my Bachelor of Arts in three years, as it allowed me to focus on my schoolwork instead of limiting my studying time due to working a job with lengthy hours to pay for schooling. It provided me with a sense of relief in my world of grief and motivated me to tackle my schooling and persevere during the most strenuous time of my life.”

Abby Edmond [BSc/23] heard about the scholarship through her guidance councillor, and she decided to apply because the criteria resonated with her having lost her dad when she was in high school. She said going through this loss posed unique challenges for her that other students couldn’t relate to, and this scholarship made her feel like she wasn’t alone.

“Maintaining a high GPA is very important to be a competitive candidate for medicine, which requires many hours of studying. This meant that the scholarship was a valued source of financial support for me during my studies, allowing me to work less hours at my part time job and alleviate stress surrounding paying for tuition and textbooks,” said Edmond. “For any students that have lost a parent, don’t be afraid to reach out for support when you need it. There are so many people that are happy to help you succeed, and this scholarship is a perfect example of that.”

Price said that even if he didn’t realize it at the time, he always had people helping him along the way, and now he wants to pay it forward.

“I see how much time and effort and money my mentors and role models have given back to UM, and so there’s a clear path in front of me,” he says. “I see it in our community and so I’m trying to follow in their footsteps.”

So far, the scholarship has been awarded to five recipients, and that number will continue to grow, which Price hopes will have a positive impact on both the recipients and the broader UM community.
