				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management <a href="https://umanitoba.ca/faculties/kinrec/research/researchseminarseries.html">Research Seminar Series</a> continues in November, with a talk by Dr. Erin K. Sharpe, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at Brock University, St. Catharines, Ont.</p>
<p>Dr. Sharpe&#8217;s talk is titled <strong>Researching Children&#8217;s Playful Geographies.<br />
</strong></p>
<p>Dr. Sharpe&#8217;s research explores the historical, social, political and ideological terrain of young people at play, and its implications for young people. Her work considers the potential of leisure studies and practice to contribute to and erase the limitations we place on young people’s playful expressions.</p>
<p>Making the introduction this month will be Leah Nicholson Goertzen, PhD candidate, who will give a 10-minute presentation on her research, entitled, <strong>Exploring the role of creative arts leisure in mental illness recovery with individuals experiencing homelessness.</strong></p>
<p>The presentation is free of charge and open to the public, staff and students.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management Research Seminar Series kicks off for the 2019/2020 academic year on October 24th, with a talk by Dr. Donna Goodwin, professor at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport &amp; Recreation.</p>
<p>Dr. Goodwin&#8217;s talk is titled <strong>Community Service Learning &#8211; Not All Good: Ethical Reflexions on Power Imbalances</strong>.</p>
<p>The presentation will review the pedagogical benefits of community service learning (CSL), the learning theory that underpins it, and how many ways it can be violated to the advantage of students, but the burden (harm) of community partners.&nbsp;Although CSL is based upon collaboration, reciprocal relationships, and appreciation for diversity, power relationships need to be balanced to achieve shared goals, expectations, and benefits.&nbsp;Mistakes made, lessons learned, and changes underway with be shared using the knowledge gathered in a multi-phased research study of a disability related undergraduate CSL course.</p>
<p>Dr. Goodwin will be introduced by Jacqueline Ladwig, PhD candidate in Applied Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba, who will give a 10-minute presentation on her research, entitled, <strong>The nature of dance and developmental disability: The impacts of dance on social inclusion, self-efficacy, and motor performance.</strong></p>
<p>The presentation is free of charge and open to the public, staff and students.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s no denying the benefits of exercise for people of all ages.&nbsp; Yet, exercise seems to fall to the wayside as people get older.</p>
<p>In this month&#8217;s HLHPRI Research Seminar Series, Dr. Bradley Young of the School of Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa joins us to present his psycho-social and pedagogical research pertaining to lifelong sport and Masters athletes.&nbsp;</p>
<p>He will describe ongoing research and address strategies to attract more adults to sport, touching upon research that informs promotional messaging, the accommodation of participatory motives in programming, and effective tailoring of coaching curriculum to adult athletes.</p>
<p>Dr. Young publishes on topics relating to the psycho-social aspects of lifelong sport participation, the effective programming of adult sport, and messaging to promote adult sport. His research focuses on how and why Masters athletes commit to adult sport, barriers to their participation, the influence of age-related perceptions, and instructional approaches with older sportspersons.</p>
<p>His research on sport and aging has been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Institute of Health Research.</p>
