The University of Manitoba Pension Office has created a new video that offers an engaging and easy-to-understand overview of the UM Pension Plan (1993), outlining its main benefits — including 100% matching contributions by UM — and how new employees can enroll.

5 things to know about  the UM Pension Plan (1993):

1. Matching contributions. When you become a plan member, the UM matches 100% of each contribution you make.
2. Employees can enroll on day one of employment.
3. The UM Pension Plan (1993) assets are professionally managed so that you don’t have to worry about making any investment decisions.
4. By the time you retire, your pension benefit could become one of your largest financial assets.
5. It’s yours for keeps, all of it. If you leave the UM, the entire amount is portable and will be transferred out on your behalf.

This year’s election for the University of Manitoba Pension Plan Committee (1993) had 6 candidates. The voter turnout was 1,417 voters or 28.1 per cent of the electorate. This compared to the 2020 election where there were 4 candidates with 1,360 voters or 28.8 per cent of the electorate.

This year’s election for the Non-Active Voting Representative fielded for the first time 2 candidates. The voter turnout was 209 voters or 14.8 per cent of the electorate.

In a May 10 letter to retirees, UM confirmed the election of Charles Mossman, former Finance Associate Professor, Asper School of Business, University of Manitoba (1990 – 2013).

Statement I

would describe voting electronically in the 2023 Pension Committee elections as easy to do, taking me a minimal amount of time.

• 88.7 per cent agree or strongly agree

Statement II

I received timely notice and adequate information about the Pension Committee elections through U of M Today and personal emails sent to me on behalf of the Pension Office, University of Manitoba prior to voting.

• 80.5 per cent agree or strongly agree

The Pension Committee is charged with overseeing the administration of the Plan. Examples of the Pension Committee responsibilities include governance oversight, and investment strategies.

The Pension Committee, typically meets four to five times a year and is composed of:

• Two (2) active plan member representatives (current faculty or staff)
• One (1) inactive plan member representative (retired faculty or staff)
• Three (3) administrators appointed by position/title
• Four (4) additional persons appointed by the Board of Governors

The election period will run from April 24 to May 8. The nominees will be listed on a ballot with their names, photos and biographies.

To ensure the election process is completely private and confidential, the University has once again contracted the services of Canadian firm, Simply Voting. To access the confidential voting website, Simply Voting will assign a randomly generated identification number and secure password to each eligible voter. This will enable each voter to cast their electronic ballot without their vote being tied to their identity.

Simply Voting will send each voter their identification number and secure password through the email address provided to them by IST from pensionelection2023@umanitoba.ca

Each category of representatives — current and retired faculty and staff — has its own nomination and election process. The Pension Office will mail a separate communication directly to U of M’s retired plan members.

For active plan members of University of Manitoba Pension Plan (1993):

• For all active plan members, no paper copies will be printed.
• If you are an active plan member, you will receive an email notification informing you when your Pension Statement is available in ESS.
• Statements typically become available in June of each year.
   

Former employees with the University of Manitoba Pension Plan (1993):

• Any former employees who no longer have access to ESS will receive their Pension Statement in paper format and mailed to their home address. It is important to ensure that your home address is up to date in the Pension Office.
