Close to 100 undergraduate students participated in the annual Rady Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Studies Open House to watch presentations and speak with current graduate students and faculty members in 12 different graduate studies programs in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.

In addition to the presentations, students were able to browse through the information village on Joe Doupe concourse to get information on specific programs and have direct conversations with faculty and current graduate students. Prizes were offered based on participation in the information village, with students receiving science stamps on their “passports” to submit for a draw to win bookstore gift cards.

“I really enjoyed how interactive a lot of the booths were. Everyone was very approachable and knowledgeable in their own respective fields. It was fun learning about the different Master’s/PhD programs that the university offers,“ said Jesse Porcioncula, a 2022 Bachelor of Health Sciences graduate from the University of Manitoba.

“I was personally interested in the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program. With our health-care system rapidly evolving, I think this profession has a lot of potential in minimizing gaps and doing really amazing work.”

Students at the Fort Garry campus were able to take advantage of a shuttle service to and from Bannatyne campus for an easy commute to the open house, which took place November 15, 2023.

“The open house gave students a chance to explore RFHS graduate studies, as well as the Bannatyne campus, beyond what they can find on the UM website,” said Dr. Hope Anderson, vice-dean, graduate and post-doctoral studies, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.

This year included some new elements such as an online Q & A tool to encourage student participation during the presentations. It resulted in a great response with more than 40 questions asked and answered throughout the presentations.

Representatives of graduate studies programs from the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, Max Rady College of Medicine, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences and the College of Pharmacy gave presentations.

“The turnout was really good. We had students from different levels, with a lot from first-year university, which was so great to see that students are already starting to think about what to do when they graduate,” said Pei San Lew, a technician in the department of physiology and pathophysiology. ”It was a whole variety of students from different backgrounds, not only students in science.”

At the end of the day there was a networking and coffee event to provide more opportunities to strengthen the connections between students and faculty.

“I appreciated the chance to connect with faculty members and current students. The one-on-one interactions allowed me to learn about their research interests and ongoing projects, which helped me gauge the potential for mentorship and collaboration,” said Porcioncula.

Members of the Health Sciences Graduate Students’ Association volunteered for the event and helped to answer questions of prospective students.

Interested students attended presentations on 12 health science graduate programs and spoke with current grad students and faculty members at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences’ Graduate Studies Open House on Feb. 23 on the Bannatyne campus.

The annual open house offers students an in-depth look at master’s and PhD options to help them plan their potential educational and career paths.

Representatives of graduate studies programs from the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, Max Rady College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy gave presentations.

“I wanted to see what my options were in medicine,” said Brett Torres, a first-year UM student. “I saw lots of opportunity, especially in research. Lots of presentations spoke to me on what my future could be.”

After the morning of presentations, student attendees browsed through the Information Village, where departments had display booths describing their programs.

The booths also gave students the chance to ask questions in one-on-one interactions with graduate students and instructors directly involved in these programs.

“Beyond learning about graduate education options within the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, learners also gain insight into how enjoyable and supportive the programs and learning environments can be,” said Dr. Hope Anderson, vice-dean, graduate and post-doctoral studies, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. “All of our participants enjoy the opportunity to connect.”

Torres said the chance to speak with current graduate students was particularly helpful. “It was very interesting to see a perspective from those who are ahead of me at the graduate level,” he said.

“I feel more prepared for my future and I’m happy I got the information I wanted about research. I’m not sure if I’m going to use research as a bridge to medical school or if I’m going to become a full-time researcher. I’m exploring my options and this open house did a really good job of doing that.”

The 2023 Graduate Studies Open House marked the first time the event has been held in person since 2019.

“The opportunity to connect personally, and in real time, is of great benefit,” Anderson said.

UM’s Spiritual Care office has moved to a new location of 521A/B UMSU University Centre and they are excited to officially welcome the UM community to the new Multi-Faith Centre with a week-long open house!

From October 17 to 21, the centre is hosting several activities to celebrate this expansion and providing an opportunity for the campus community to discover the many ways that Spiritual Care provides support in spiritual well-being, regardless of someone’s spiritual or religious background.

“We know that many faith-based communities do not have spaces to call their own, or to gather. It is our hope that student communities can find a sense of belonging and rooting in this space,” says Edgar French, Spiritual Care Coordinator. “Perhaps now, more than ever, contemplative and quiet spaces to recharge and be grounded are needed. We hope the Multi-Faith Centre can be that for many students.”

One of the new options at the Multi-Faith Centre is the ability to smudge within the space at designated times. “We all need spaces to cultivate our individual sense of community and belonging,” French says.

Beyond this, French and the Spiritual Care staff are also excited to see how the new centre, as a physical space, will foster connections between students of all faith backgrounds and worldviews, and allow students to learn from each other.

For a community as diverse as the one at UM, French affirms that we also need “spaces that transcend our community distinctives and bring us together, forums where differing groups can engage with each other, grow in respect for one another, and discover they have a lot more in common than they realize.”

Spiritual Care has remained committed to providing support to the UM community especially throughout the pandemic, and being able to gather and enjoy the Multi-Faith Centre at this point in time is a rewarding experience – and they are delighted to share it with you.

The upcoming events and activities are as follows:

Faith and Ritual: Celebrating the Diversity of Spiritual Traditions through Photography, will debut on Monday, October 17th at 11:00 am showcasing the artwork of local freelance photographer Colin Corneau. The exhibit will then run until the end of the Fall term and will be open on Mondays from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in 521A/B UMSU University Centre.

We look forward to meeting you at the Desautels Faculty of Music Virtual Open House on November 3 -5, where you will have the opportunity to explore our comprehensive academic programs and connect with professors and instructors, as well as current students. Join us for this exciting virtual event where we open our doors and showcase our vibrant student and academic life of our faculty.

Every year, the University of Manitoba’s Desautels Faculty of Music hosts an open house for high school students in grades 11 and 12. Prospective students will be able to choose the sessions they want to attend based on their interests, areas of study, and needs. Because this year we will offer a virtual event, students will have the opportunity to attend far more classes, and more meetings with professors and instructors!

Now is your chance to learn why so many students choose to study at the Desautels Faculty of Music. Our engaged and caring instructors and faculty members, our collegial and kind students, our phenomenal ensembles, and our academic rigor make us a leader in Canadian music education.

[See image gallery at umtoday-wordpress.ad.umanitoba.ca] Getting in

Students can learn about how to apply and audition for the Desautels Faculty of Music, how to brush up on their music skills for the music theory entrance exam, and get a primer on how the first-year registration process works, before meeting with our Faculty of Music Student Association executives to ask questions about what it’s like to be a student in the Desautels Faculty of Music.

Meeting professors and instructors

Learning from the best gives you a head-start for what comes after graduation, our professors and instructors will be answering your questions about individual areas of study. Through these sessions, prospective students can get a sneak peek of what the Desautels Faculty of Music curriculum is like and experience first-hand topics and content our faculty members explore in their classes. But don’t take our word for it. Here are just a few of the things that our recent graduates have to say about our professors and instructors:

Are you ready to pursue a university education in music?

Every year, the University of Manitoba’s Desautels Faculty of Music hosts an open house for high school students in grades 11 and 12. Here, students learn about the application and audition process, tour DFOM facilities, sit-in on classes that interest them, and meet with students, instructors, and faculty members!

Now is your chance to learn why so many students choose to study at the Desautels Faculty of Music. Our engaged and caring instructors and faculty members, our collegial and kind students, our phenomenal ensembles, and our academic rigor make us a leader in Canadian music education.

Because of our commitment to public health efforts, the Desautels Faculty of Music will be offering its 2020 open house online. The silver lining is that this year, we are able to offer students previews of far more classes, and more meetings with professors and instructors!

Open house students will be able to choose the sessions they want to attend based on their interests, areas of study, and needs.

Getting in

Students can learn about how to apply and audition for the Desautels Faculty of Music, how to brush up on their music skills for the music theory entrance exam, and get a primer on how the first-year registration process works, before meeting with our Faculty of Music Student Association executives to ask questions about what it’s like to be a student in the Desautels Faculty of Music.

Meeting your professors and instructors

Many of our professors and instructors will be on hand to talk to you about your passion for music, and to answer questions about individual areas of study. They are engaged and dedicated to helping to raise up the next generation of fantastic musicians. But don’t take our word for it. Here are just a few of the things that our recent graduates have to say about our professors and instructors:

“I didn’t have the background in jazz that would have allowed me the confidence to audition. Larry [Roy] took me under his wing, and pointed me in the right direction, helping me through the steps, setting me up with one of his students to teach me, and even giving me a few lessons on his own time. Larry really helped me bridge the gap between music as a hobby and music as a career, showing me that it was possible.” – Rylan Knaggs, 2020 DFOM graduate

“Jon Gordon was my mentor throughout my degree and I’m grateful for the support, nurturing, wisdom and kindness that he gave me.” – Anna Blackmore, 2020 DFOM graduate

“[My professors] were all incredibly supportive advisors and patient listeners concerning my cello playing, paper writing and beyond. Dr. [Minna Rose] Chung especially was a great influence on me and the way I play the cello.” – Alaina Majewski, 2020 DFOM graduate

“My teachers were and still are my mentors, but I would like to specifically mention Monica Huisman and Mel Braun as people without who I wouldn’t be where and who I am right now. No words can describe how grateful I am for everything they have done for me.” Svetlana Gharagyozyan, 2020 DFOM graduate

“Prof. Gordon Fitzell [was] my main teacher throughout my degree and has been essential in my development as a composer. I would not have been exposed to half of the fantastic music I had been if not for our weekly composition lessons.” Nolan Hildebrand, 2020 DFOM graduate

“[My faculty mentors] all taught me different ways of how to grow my own voice and how to start being able to teach others to do the same. They are all so passionate about what they teach and are role models to me as musicians.” Elizabeth Sadler, 2020 DFOM graduate

Join our classes!

Students have the opportunity to sit in on as many classes as they would like to get a feel for the learning experience in the Desautels Faculty of Music. From music theory to composition, from techniques classes to masterclasses, students will see how hands-on and fascinating their learning experience will be, and how far it can take them, both musically and academically.

Here are some of the impressive things that our students have done in their coursework.

Meredith Liu dissected the choreography and music of pop band Ok GO!

Karen Sigurdson explored the history of Metis music and dance.

The Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Graduate Studies are co-hosting a Graduate Studies Open House on February 19, 2020 on the Bannatyne campus. This event will allow students considering graduate studies in the health sciences to explore their options.

“This Open House is a great opportunity for students to learn about the different graduate studies options offered in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences,” says Dr. Hope Anderson, Vice-Dean of Graduate Studies. “Every year students tell me they learned about a program that they hadn’t yet considered. It’s very exciting to help students identify new possibilities.”

The Open House will feature presentations from a variety of health sciences programs, an information village, a pizza lunch, and the chance to explore the Bannatyne campus. Admissions and Awards staff from the Faculty of Graduate Studies will be on hand so students can ask their questions about making their graduate studies dream a reality.

Students are encouraged to bring a resumé to drop off at the information village with potential summer job employers.

Students interested in attending this Open House should register here.

Emma Simmons stood at a booth listening intently to the explanation of what a pathologist’s assistant does. The second-year bachelor of health sciences student in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences had never heard of the department of pathology before, and it sparked her interest. She is now considering it as a career.

Simmons was one of the more than 125 students who attended the Graduate Studies Open House on February 20 on the Bannatyne campus.

“I’m really interested in the physician assistant program now, and the department of pathology is super interesting,” Simmons said. “This is a fantastic opportunity to figure out what you don’t know.”

The Open House was a chance for students to learn more about the graduate programs offered in the colleges and departments across the health sciences, find out what opportunities exist and have their questions answered. The all-day event, hosted by the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Graduate Studies, included campus tours, 13 program presentations and 15 information booths set up.

“We organized this event because we believe that it is so important for students to know their career options,” said Dr. Hope Anderson, vice-dean, graduate studies, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. “I can speak confidently on behalf of the professors, student volunteers and staff; we sincerely enjoyed interacting with all Open House participants.”

More than 125 students attended the Graduate Studies Open House.

Sitting on the other side of the department of pathology’s booth was Lance Fuczek. The instructor in the pathologists’ assistant program said the Open House is a great way to spread the word about his department.

“Today’s event is a really important venue to give exposure to potential students,” he said. “It gives them a good chance to visit all the different grad programs so they get a really good idea of what they would like to do.”

Kirstin Maharajh was another student whose horizons were broadened by interacting with members of various programs. The second-year bachelor of health sciences student’s options are wide open.

“I didn’t realize how many different things you can do in health care,” she said.

Booths set up ranged from graduate studies in the College of Pharmacy to the department of immunology to the College of Nursing. The booth that attracted the largest crowd was from the department of medical microbiology and infectious diseases in the Max Rady College of Medicine.

“We’re a very popular graduate program,” said Shelby Reimer, a master’s student in the department. “I’ve heard that ours is a kind of ‘sexy science’. So everybody is looking at infectious diseases and working with things like Ebola or Zika virus or HIV. I think that’s really what draws people in and makes them curious about our program.”

The main questions Reimer was answering from students was how to find a master’s supervisor and how to find co-op positions for summer work as an undergraduate student.

Bayasgalan Bayaraa was attracted to the department of medical microbiology and infectious diseases booth because she has friends who work in that field. The Bachelor of Science graduate was collecting pamphlets and any information she could get her hands on.

“I’m pretty much looking at every single area,” she said. “I’m trying to figure out what I want to go for.”
