Final exams can be a difficult and stressful period for any student; it is important to access the support that the UM has to offer. Don’t forget to prioritize your wellbeing and manage your stress throughout this time to avoid unforeseen roadblocks; however, if extenuating circumstances occur there is the privilege of a deferred exam.

Though it is rare, medical or compassionate circumstances may arise which prevent a student from taking an exam as scheduled. An exam deferral is a privilege that may be granted under extenuating circumstances. UM developed the Self-Declaration Policy for Students with this in mind.

If you are unable to write an exam, and have no other available documentation, you must complete the Online Self-Declaration Form to request a deferred exam. Students must be aware that submitting a Self-Declaration Form either dishonestly, or for a non-valid reason, is the same as submitting any other fraudulent (false) document, which may result in disciplinary action under the UM Student Discipline By-Law.

Examples of non-valid reasons

Attending a personal or family event (e.g., vacation, wedding)

Optional travel

Technological difficulties

Competitions or events, related to personal interests (choir, acting, pageants, exhibitions)

Employment-related commitments

Examples of valid reasons

Sudden illness or injury on the day of an exam

Unexpected compassionate circumstances

Known conflicts of religious observance

Bereavement or loss of a loved one

Participation in an inter-university, provincial, inter-provincial, national or international scholastic or athletic event

Be sure to check in with an advisor in your home faculty to confirm which events and other reasons are relevant and may be supported by the Self-Declaration form. There are some circumstances in which other documentation may be required by your faculty.

If you are experiencing anxiety around your academic obligations, please view the student supports and resources that are available to you, such as:

Asper School of Business Associate Dean of Teaching & Learning and The Asssociates Fellow in Innovation, Wenxi Pu, can’t stop thinking about what we’re thinking about when we use technology.

On each annual World Mental Health Day, technology’s role in our lives changes. While the promise of technology has been to bring us closer, what we see in countless articles, books, and just everyday life, is that technology has driven us further apart, leaving us stressed and lonely.

Through the Asper School, Pu is on multiple research projects at the cross section of technology, mental health, and business, but with a positive spin. He’s on the forefront of figuring out how we can use these tools in an ethical, positive and responsible ways that promote mental health, or as he might say it, “looking inward.”

What effect has rapidly advancing technology had on our mental health?

Right now, everything is becoming metrified. And AI learns from that.

Think about friendship. It used to be only “we’re good friends, we share some common hobbies. We like each other, I feel good when I’m around this guy.” Now it’s how many likes, how many followers you have, how many mutual connections. That now seems to decide the value of your social worth.

There’s this term called the McDonalization of friendships. Everyone wants the fast track, when a real friendship requires more time, more energy.

In the future, when you apply that to mental health, it collapses the complex question of “how do you feel?” into something like “your depression is at a two, it needs to be at one.” Think how employers could use that data against us for the purpose of efficiency. “Your depression is at a three? That’s too high. You need to take a few days off.”

What I’m studying now, is, how can we stop moving in that direction.

Are there ways in which we can use technology like AI and social media in a positive way for our mental health?

I don’t want to undermine the detrimental effects of social media and AI on us. Our human mind is trained to get distracted, right? It’s a vicious cycle. Because of your short attention span, you can’t get any work done. You get stressed. You go to social media to come down. You get a shorter attention span. You get more stressed. On and on.

AI is a turbocharged version. Social media is like “you like this post? I’ll show you this.” It just wants your attention. AI is worse because it always wants more. When you ask for help creating something, it’ll do it then ask, “do you want a visualization of that?”

But on the other side, we can design a human-centred AI in a way that promotes mindfulness, right? It can say, “you don’t have to chat with me, go outside for a walk or chat with a friend. Give your family a call.”

It’s the same with social media. Both are such powerful tools that you could use them effectively to promote, say, deepening your offline relationships.

What kind of critical thinking should we do as these technologies become more prevalent in our day-to-day lives?

You have to realize that technology is pushing us to look outward. You got X amount of likes, rather than how you really feel.

Even this conversation, as it’s being recorded, AI is going to give you bullet points of the transcription, but is that all we really are? Bullet points? No, there’s a richness to this conversation that isn’t really being captured by that.

Before we had cameras, when we would look at something really new, we would just look at it, right? Imagine seeing an elephant for the first time, looking at the trunk, the big ears, everything. That’s great for our mental health. Now what do we do? We take a picture that you’ll probably never look at again, then we move on.

So that’s why I encourage everyone to look inward.

What is something positive people can try on World Mental Health day?

Personally, I would highly encourage people to meditate. I think we can incorporate that as part of our daily routine, to really understand ourselves.

Typically, I wake up one hour earlier in the morning, and just sit there, focus on my breath. Watch my thoughts go by.
—
The Asper School of Business aims to expand global knowledge and engage in intellectual exploration to advance teaching, learning, and research. Our researchers’ scholarly work is regularly published in internationally renowned publications.

The Student Wellness Centre (SWC) is open for the 2025-26 academic year! This September marks the SWC’s two-year anniversary, providing UM students with a space to prioritize wellbeing and connect with supports. If you haven’t checked out the space in the past year, this fall is a great time! Start off the term by prioritizing wellness. Here’s six reasons to pay them a visit:

Lounge: The SWC boasts a comfy and convenient lounge space, and anyone is welcome to use it! Sometimes you just need a spot on campus to study, eat lunch, or just decompress, and the lounge is available for any of those purposes and more.

Wellness resource library: Come check out the text resources that the SWC has made available for students. You’ll find a variety of books and pamphlets on subjects related to health, wellbeing, safety, and more. Maybe you’ll find the answer to a question, or maybe you’ll discover a new strategy for maintaining your mental health.

Harm reduction and health/hygiene supplies: The SWC views wellness from a holistic perspective, so sexual and physical health is an important part of the whole picture of wellness. That’s why they stock safer sex supplies – such as various forms of contraception and HIV self-test kits and menstrual supplies. These materials are available for free to all UM students and can be found in the wellness resource library. If you or someone you know could benefit from these materials, the SWC is a non-judgmental, safe place to source them.

Consultations: Interpersonal support is also available. The SWC is staffed with Healthy U Peer Health Educators who are trained to listen to or talk through your wellness needs. If you’re seeking out a higher level of professional care, the SWC is still a great place to start. Peer Health Educators are equipped with a knowledge of further supports at the university and in the wider community, and they can help point you in the right direction.

Events: Keep an eye out for the wellness events that the SWC hosts throughout the year! The goal of the events is to help students de-stress, whether by offering fun activities and snacks or by distributing helpful resources. Past activities have included pet therapy, crafts, and movie nights. To stay in the loop on upcoming events, follow @healthyuofm on Instagram or visit healthyuofm.com.

No reason at all: You don’t need a reason to visit the SWC! If you’re just curious to check out the space, come poke your head in. The SWC was created to be a comfortable and inclusive place where students can relax; no one will interrogate you about why you’re there. The space operates on a drop-in basis – no need for an appointment, just stop by!

Why not take a minute to check out the SWC this fall? You can find them at 162 Extended Education Complex (Fort Garry Campus) Monday through Friday. Check out @healthyuofm on Instagram for the most up-to-date open hours. Questions?

Offered by The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, the TLC program is grounded in five essential teaching roles: curricular designer, communicator, student advocate, assessor, and lifelong learner. These roles, informed by literature and best practices from other North American institutions, reflect the diverse responsibilities faculty take on in higher education.

The TLC helps participants:

Increase competency in teaching and learning.

Gain deeper understanding of evidence-based pedagogy.

Understand the diverse needs of students.

Earn a formal certificate recognizing their growth and development as educators.

As a reminder, all pre- and tenured faculty, instructors, sessional instructors, librarians and post-doctoral fellows can partake in the TLC’s mini-institutes and workshops, without being registered in the TLC program. Past attendance at workshops may also count toward certificate requirements for those who decide to enroll later. Our upcoming events for the TLC program include:

TLC Mini-Institute (Day 1) – Designing and Evaluating Assessment Strategies

This workshop will provide instructors with opportunities to design assessment strategies to support student learning. You will design formative and summative assessments and learn strategies for providing constructive feedback on students’ work. You will also have opportunities to evaluate the effectiveness of different assessment tools, such as holistic and analytic rubrics. Please have at hand a current course syllabus with learning objectives.

TLC Workshops

Select from this listing of workshops listed in date order.

Teaching Dossier (TLCN06)

Increasingly, university promotion and tenure committees are requiring a teaching dossier to document your development and achievements as an educator. This workshop looks at the requirements at the University of Manitoba for teaching dossiers and covers the basics of writing a Teaching Philosophy statement and creating a teaching dossier.

Register for Teaching Dossier (TLCN06) on Wednesday, May 14, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Reflective Practice (TLCN09)

John Dewey observed that, “We do not learn from experience. We learn from reflecting on experience.” To become a better teacher, it is necessary to reflect on what we do and why we do it – to ask ourselves, is what we do effective? In this workshop we will explore several models of self-reflection, including the Gibbs’ Model, as methods for engaging in a reflective practice. Participants can also share their own successes and struggles as they strive to become a better teacher.

Register for Reflective Practice (TLCN09) on Wednesday, May 14, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Developing Intercultural Teaching Competence (TLCN05)

Students and instructors bring their own culture into the teaching and learning contexts in which they inhabit. Similarly, every teaching and learning context is informed by and situated in institutional, regional, and national cultures. In this workshop, you’ll explore your own cultural attitudes, knowledge, and skills, and those of your learners and the environments you all find yourselves in. Then, you’ll apply this to your own teaching practices through elements of course design.

Register for Developing Intercultural Teaching Competence (TLCN05) on Thursday, May 15, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Navigating Challenging Student Situations (TLCN03)

As instructors, you may have experienced behaviour by your students that you felt was disrespectful, rude, or disruptive. These can be challenging situations to deal with. Staff from Student Advocacy and Case Management and the Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management will provide an overview of pertinent University policies and procedures to help you understand your rights and responsibilities as an instructor. This interactive workshop will provide you with strategies and tips for preventing and responding to these behaviours.

Register for Navigating Challenging Student Situations (TLCN03) on Thursday, May 15, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Universal Design for Learning (TLCN01)

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an orientation to teaching and learning that promotes greater student choice and agency in learning experiences, with the aim of reducing barriers to learning by providing multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression. In this workshop, participants will explore how UDL values intersect with their own teaching philosophies, identify barriers to learning for students with a range of needs, and (re)design course elements to adopt UDL guidelines in a way that is practical for instructors yet beneficial to learners.

Register for Universal Design for Learning (TLCN01) on Tuesday, May 20, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Self-Evaluation of Teaching Practice (TLCN10)

Feedback and evaluation of teaching are part of every teacher’s life. How do you make sense of the evaluative feedback you receive from SRI scores, daily classroom experiences, and student grades? This foundational workshop examines the theory and practice of evaluation and suggests practical strategies for integrating effective evaluative practices into your teaching. Please note that this workshop does not cover the design and creation of student assessments.

Register for Self-Evaluation of Teaching Practice (TLCN10) on Tuesday, May 20, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Mental Health in the Classroom: Responding to Students Demonstrating Mental Health Distress (TLCN07)

Young adults are highly susceptible to mental health problems. We know that most instructors encounter many students who are struggling with mental health issues that affect their academic performance, behaviour in the classroom, and interactions with teaching staff. Research also indicates that the incident rate and intensity of mental health problems experienced by students is increasing. These situations can be stressful, time-consuming, and potentially can involve risks to personal safety for the students and others. David Ness, the Director of the Student Counselling Centre at the University of Manitoba, will provide you with information about how to identify and respond effectively to student mental health issues, how to understand the factors that contribute to student distress, and how to access resources. This interactive workshop will involve case study material to apply your knowledge of risk assessment, response alternatives, and on- and off-campus resources.

Register for Mental Health in the Classroom: Responding to Students Demonstrating Mental Health Distress (TLCN07) on Wednesday, May 21, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Academic Integrity Teaching and Learning Strategies (TLCN04)

Do you want to promote academic integrity in your course, but you don’t know how to do this? In this workshop, we will discuss the meaning of academic integrity at the University of Manitoba, and how it relates to your teaching and learning environment (whether that be face-to-face, remote/online). We will discuss ways to implement teaching and assessment strategies that promote integrity that will allow you to focus on students’ learning and community building.

Resources for academic integrity education (e.g., syllabus statements, learning activities) that you can modify and incorporate into your courses will be shared.

Register for Academic Integrity Teaching and Learning Strategies (TLCN04) on Wednesday, May 21, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Teaching and Technology (TLCN02)

In this workshop, we will explore a framework for using technology in teaching and learning. Rather than a technology ‘how-to’ session, the focus will be on providing a method for evaluating technology that supports the goals of teaching and learning. We will also discuss the benefits and challenges of using technology in the classroom.

Register for Teaching and Technology (TLCN02) on Thursday, May 22, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Indigenous Knowledges (TLCN08)

This workshop introduces participants to Indigenous pedagogies by contextualizing Indigenous knowledges, discussing the importance of making space for Indigenous content and knowledge transmission in the academy, and providing participants with resources about the pedagogical significance of Indigenous knowledges.

Register for Indigenous Knowledges (TLCN08) on Thursday, May 22, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning will also be offering workshops TLCN01 through TLCN10 again in December, this time in an online format via Zoom.

Whether you’re just beginning your teaching career or looking to expand your toolkit, the Teaching and Learning Certificate provides the support, community, and practical knowledge needed to thrive as an educator at the University of Manitoba.

John Dewey observed that, “We do not learn from experience. We learn from reflecting on experience.” In order to become a better teacher, it is necessary to reflect on what we do and why we do it – to ask ourselves, is what we do effective? In this workshop we will explore several models of self-reflection, including the Gibbs’ Model, as methods for engaging in a reflective practice. Participants will also have the opportunity to share their own successes and struggles as they strive to become a better teacher.

TLCN07 Mental Health in the Classroom: Responding to Students Demonstrating Mental Health Distress

Date and time: Wednesday, May 21, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m

Do you have passion or interest in helping others with their mental health and well-being? If so, you may want to consider a career in the field of healthcare. Most of us are familiar with a few of the most well-known healthcare occupations. After all, we’ve likely visited a doctor for a cold, been to the dentist office for a routine cleaning with the dental hygienist, saw a physiotherapist for a sports injury, or observed a nurse in action caring for a loved one. However, many of us would be surprised to learn that there are many different occupations in the field of healthcare, more than we may have ever imagined!

If you’re interested in learning more about pathways to becoming a therapist, be sure to attend one or more of the Discover Your Future in Healthcare (DYFIH) virtual sessions or check out one of the recorded sessions and discover the many healthcare options available for you! Career Services will be highlighting a few healthcare occupations this year including:

DYFIH – Art Therapist: Tuesday, February 18 | 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.

DYFIH – Mental Health Therapist/Counsellor: Thursday, February 20 | 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.

This session will have panel members with Clinical Psychology background, M.Ed in Counselling Psychology, Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy, and a Masters in Social Work

Each session in the series offers the chance to learn first-hand about the occupation and will feature a few professionals from the field who will speak about their experiences in the role. Admissions and academic program information will also be highlighted, if applicable.

All sessions will be virtual. Register in advance on UMConnect to reserve your spot today!
