PowerSchool is a California-based provider of cloud software to over 16,000 customers in more than 90 countries. The company informed its Manitoba customers on Tuesday that a cyber incident had occurred on Dec. 28 and that some specific student information had been compromised.

“There’s some conversations now, going around, that maybe they waited too long to inform people … it took until the beginning of January before people started to find out,” said David Gerhard, head of computer science at the University of Manitoba.

Dr. Cameron Hauseman, an associate Professor in the Department of Educational Administration, Foundations and Psychology expertise in educational governance, called the rollout of new dashboards and their utility “very disappointing.”

Hauseman noted the NDP initiative sought to make divisions more accountable to the public, but some are releasing high-level information and there is little consistency among the datasets.

A professor of education who specializes in Indigenous education wants to see a greater effort made to ensure there are Indigenous language teachers in the province as a way to approach reconciliation.

“They have been shamed for expressing anything that was affiliated with their respective languages or cultures or identities … along with other colonial interferences with Indigenous peoples, [it] has led to a situation where there are not as many Indigenous, fluent language speakers as we would like,” said Frank Deer with the University of Manitoba, who is Kanien’kehá:ka from Kahnawake, Que.

In order to correct that, Deer says, Indigenous people need to be able to learn the languages that reflect their identities.
