It’s been a strange year for photos of our beautiful campuses. Without the activities that usually take place throughout the year and the necessity to work and study remotely, the content on the umanitoba Instagram page had to pivot, like everyone had to since the pandemic began. That said, our favourite Instagram photos of 2020 look slightly different in 2020, with a mix of pre-lockdown snaps, photos of students with masks and empty convocation settings, and an international tragedy, we’re still able to find memorable images in all of it.

Thank you to the hard-working operations and maintenance staff for clearing walking paths and roads during this early blast of winter. If you haven’t heard, a number of buildings are without power and will be closed until about 4:00 when power is expected to be restored. Classes and labs are cancelled in the affected buildings. The 19-year old took his place at the front of his class, wearing a carefully chosen blazer and bowtie and said, “My name is Aandeg Muldrew and I’ll be your instructor.” It was two years ago that Muldrew became the university’s youngest sessional instructor, teaching introductory Ojibwe at the Faculty of Arts Language Centre. We would like to finish off our convocation celebrations by congratulating Rayanna Seymour @rayannachristi & Jeremy Mckay @jeremythree for achieving their, Juris Doctor Degree, from the Faculty of Law!! Both students, and now second time alumni, have been heavily involved in our @umanitoba community throughout the span of their two degrees. Both students have selflessly volunteered their time through @umasacouncil @milsa.robsonhall @studentpipelineactioncommittee among many other committees, to create safe spaces for Indigenous voices. Both, have presented outstanding leadership and humanitarian efforts and we look forward to see what they do next. If it happened in 2016 – chances are you heard about on our University of Manitoba Facebook page. Here are the stories that caught your eye and earned your likes, comments and shares…

In a historic move, the purple scarves signifying Indigenous grads became part of our official Convocation attire.

We couldn’t contain our pride when football success story David Onyemata was plucked from Bison obscurity to Saints fame.

Every graduate walks a long and challenging path to the ultimate reward completing their degree – some face more barriers than others. Heather’s story was a true inspiration.

We know how awesome our campus and our dorms are…but it’s always nice when an outlet like HuffPo shouts it out for us.

A small little spark of hope here at home next to the ongoing tragedies on the other side of the world.

Winter came in like a lion this year, with little warning and one heck of a snowfall. Of course you did what you do best – captured it all on social media.

The University of Manitoba Facebook page really is our social media hub. If it had anything to do with our school, people or campus – odds are you’ll hear about it there! Here were the stories that really got you talking in 2015…

If likes and share are any indication, you got pretty excited about this new intramural sport on campus.

Graduating new doctors is always a good thing, but it especially resonates with you when Indigenous med school grads plan to stay and practice in Manitoba communities.

It’s a bit of an understatement to say you weren’t excited to see the brand new Active Living Centre finally open its doors in April. This was good news worth spreading.

It was a pretty big day for us to find ourselves smack on the top of a national Universities social media ranking for Facebook. Love it or hate it, social media is how we’re communicating and you shared the love (and sometimes the opposing view!) with us.

Who knew that all it took to get your attention was a little ‘Hollywood on campus’?? This story caught fire and you even shared a fun series of shots of the Admin Building featuring a proud US flag.
