To protect the many, many healthy trees on the Fort Garry campus, City of Winnipeg Urban Forestry crews will be working to remove trees with Dutch elm disease this winter. These necessary removals will help prevent the spread of the devastating fungi, which easily infects non-resistant elm trees, ultimately killing them.

What is Dutch elm disease?

Caused by a type of sac fungi, Dutch elm disease is an affliction affecting primarily elm trees. In order to block the spread of the fungus within its limbs, a diseased tree will plug its own xylem tissue with gum and bladder-like extensions of the xylem cell wall called tylos

Since the xylem is what delivers water and nutrients to the rest of the tree, these plugs prevent them from travelling throughout the plant, starving and killing it.

Where are the diseased trees?

Most of the diseased elms are on the Point Lands, but there are a few on the main Fort Garry campus. If left untreated, Dutch elm disease would jeopardize the entire UM canopy.

The removal work will take place over the winter.

Moya, a lab assistant in the department of microbiology at the Faculty of Science, was grateful for the opportunity to be screened for oral cancer.  

“The dentist and assistant were really great. They were kind and explained everything before and after the checkup,” Moya said.  

The experience gave her a sense of relief that all was well with her oral health. 

Moya was one of 219 people screened by oral pathologists and residents from the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry on March 27. The Fireplace Lounge in UMSU University Centre was transformed into a makeshift clinic for the day.

The pop-up clinic was organized by Dr. Vimi Mutalik, associate professor of dental diagnostic and surgical sciences, and division head of oral diagnosis, and Dr. Mohamad-Hasan Kadhim, assistant professor of dental diagnostic and surgical sciences at the UM dental college.  

“The event was very successful,” Mutalik said. “The final numbers were way more than what we had expected. The goal of the screening event was to raise awareness about the incidence of oral cancer. We want more and more people to be aware that these cases can be asymptomatic most of the time, and you may not be aware that lesions are growing in your mouth.” 

Mutalik said another goal of the pop-up clinic was to provide a service-learning experience for residents and students.  

Faculty, staff, students and residents from the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry helped support the oral cancer screening pop-up clinic.

Dental hygiene student Elisabeth Fust volunteered to help out at the clinic because she wanted to broaden her knowledge and collaborate with the residents and dentists screening the patients.  

“I wanted to gain some experience seeing lesions in the mouth so that I can better diagnose them when I get into private practice,” Fust said.  

Periodontics resident Paul Klassen had to learn to adapt to the makeshift clinical setting.  

“The chairs are not the normal dental chairs that we have, so you have to figure out different ways to examine the patient and see all the areas of the mouth that we normally screen,” Klassen said. “The patients are really happy that we’re here this morning. They’re very receptive to all the advice we’re giving.” 

Mutalik and Kadhim organized their first pop-up screening clinic on the Bannatyne campus in October 2024. They have plans to take it on the road to rural Manitoba.

Check in online to get your spot in the queue. You will receive text messages when it is your turn to come to the Pop-up ID Centre.

• You will receive a text message when we are ready to serve you.   

What to bring:  

• Government-issued Photo ID
• Study Permit (if applicable) 

Notes:  

• If you are a returning UM student, who has their ID card do not need a new one each year/term. 
• If you have to replace your ID card, the cost is $25. 
• Regular Photo ID Centre operations will resume in the Registrar’s Office, room 400 UMSU University Centre on September 9th.

To view your registration time (available June 28th):

1. Log into Aurora.
2. Select the “Open Registration Dashboard” card.
3. Select ‘Registration Time and Status’.
4. Choose the Academic Term from the dropdown menu to see your registration access time.

To register:

1. Log into Aurora.
2. Select the “Open Registration Dashboard” card.
3. Follow the menus to register for your courses. Alternatively – you will find a step-by-step guide to registration and course selection on our Steps to Registration page.

A few notes:

• If you can’t access your registration, make sure you are accessing Aurora during your registration access time. 
• Make sure you clear any holds that prevent registration before your registration time.
• Once your registration opens, you will have 24/7 access to register for courses in Aurora until registration closes.

Waitlists:

Some courses have a waitlist option, notifying you via UM email when a space opens. Ensure you check it frequently.

You must choose either to register for an open section or join a waitlist.

You cannot:

• Register in a course and waitlist other sections of the same course.
• Waitlist a course that conflicts with another registered course.

Student ID Cards

Your Student ID card, featuring your photograph, is essential for accessing many student services. Always carry it with you. Obtain your card after registering, preferably before classes start, to avoid long wait times.

Please note that tuition fees will not be available immediately after registration. Your tuition fees for Fall 2024 / Winter 2025 will be available to view in Aurora by mid-August. You will not receive a statement in the mail.

• Monday, June 10: Students in Bannatyne Programs (Dentistry, Dental Hygiene (excluding Direct Entry), Medicine, Pharmacy, Respiratory Therapy, and Graduate students for Master of Occupational Therapy, Master of Physical Therapy, or MPAS).
• Friday, June 28: All Students in Fort Garry and Bannatyne Programs.

Campus Beautification Day offers community gathering for gardening activities, music, and free lunch. Gardening activities will begin at 9:00 a.m. and go until noon for all three locations. The entire university community is invited to join in the planting while connecting with coworkers and getting some fresh air.

Please bring your own gardening tools and a reusable water bottle. A free barbecue lunch at noon will follow, and everyone is encouraged to attend. Registration is required for Campus Beautification lunch for the three locations. The registration will allow you to participate in the gardening activities in the morning, attend lunch at noon, and your name will be entered for a prize draw.

Campus Beautification Day at Fort Garry campus is May 28 at St. Paul’s Green Space, with a rain date of May 29. RSVP by May 23 to participate. Your lunch ticket will be available for pickup at the coordination table on the day of the event.

Bannatyne campus

Campus Beautification Day at Bannatyne campus is May 23, with a rain date of May 24. RSVP by May 20 to participate. Your lunch ticket will be available for pickup at the coordination table on the day of the event.

To ease the transition from parking meters to virtual payments, eight physical parking meters will remain active in visitor lots AC, ACW, ALC, L, Q, SD and U. Drivers choosing to park in lots A, D, G, H or N lot in the evening will need to pay for parking through the HONK Mobile app or by scanning the onsite QR code to pay without downloading the app.

With HONK Mobile, drivers can pay for parking right from their vehicles and have the ability to add parking time from anywhere.

We started the week with our St John’s College Student Council at the Welcome Day event, where we met thousands of first-year students as they began their University of Manitoba journey.   

In talking with students, both new and returning college members, you can feel the excitement as they return to campus and into hands-on learning again with their friends.
