UM is expanding its iconic bison herd with four new illustrations created by local Indigenous artists that will be released throughout the 2025/26 school year, each adding new layers of creativity and authenticity to the herd. The first to be released was a striking design titled “Nîpîy Iskôtêw – Water Fire” by Ininew (Swampy Cree) and Anishinabe (Ojibwe) artist Peatr Thomas.

This initiative is a true act of collaboration. UM’s Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous) partnered with the Strategic Marketing and Communications unit to commission and champion the new designs. Through thoughtful consultations, members of the UM Indigenous community were invited to participate in the process and offered feedback on initial artist concepts, helping ensure the expanded herd reflects both artistic vision and shared storytelling from community voice.

“The bison is a sacred relative for Indigenous Peoples; one that represents strength, survival and kinship,” says Angie Bruce, Vice-President (Indigenous). “By inviting Indigenous artists to expand UM’s herd, and by listening to the Indigenous campus community throughout the process, we are honouring those teachings while celebrating Indigenous excellence in a very visible way. These bison will remind our community that we move forward together, grounded in both tradition and innovation.”

Launched in 2022, UM’s “What Kind of Bison Are You?” student recruitment campaign introduced a bold collection of illustrated bison, each reflecting the diversity and individuality of our campus to a prospective student audience.

While every illustration carries its own unique energy, together they form a powerful herd—now central to UM’s brand expression. The bison have extended beyond student recruitment to represent our entire community of students, staff, faculty and alumni. Ever-evolving and expanding, the herd is built to grow … just like the university it represents.

Now, that vision is inspired into action.

Inspiring the future by honouring the past

For First Nations and Métis people across the prairies, the bison is more than an animal. It is a relative and a teacher. It sustained communities for generations providing food, shelter, tools and carrying spiritual teachings. The expansion of UM’s herd evokes survival, renewal and collective memory.

“In Anishinaabe culture, the Bison represents Respect. It also teaches us that nothing should be wasted—its entire being was used with purpose, embodying values of sustainability and gratitude. May we walk with the same awareness, and respect for the world around us,” says Thomas in his artist’s statement.

His bison, “Nîpîy Iskôtêw – Water Fire,” reflects these teachings through its layered design and symbolic elements. His statement continues:

“This piece represents the Bison as a sacred, resilient being—one that has sustained generations and remains a symbol of strength, sustainability and guidance. The blue eyes reflect water, speaking to the Bison’s deep connection to the land and importance of water for all life. The orange Spirit lines flow through and around the Bison, representing protection and guidance, while also visualizing the connections between body, spirit and the land.”

Drawing on life experiences and teachings, Stranger’s design, “Buffalo Teachings,” carries positive life lessons that strengthen UM’s herd:

“Paskwawi-mostos have been a major part of my life since I was a child. I care for a red buffalo skull as I am a Sundancer. It has taught me and my family many positive life lessons. When we are in need of guidance we look to the animals and the land. I hope when someone looks at this design it inspires something good in them. Ekosi.”

In 2026, two more Indigenous artists will contribute their voices to the herd, ensuring UM’s bison symbol continues to evolve with both tradition and innovation. Stay tuned to see the new bison and learn about the artists’ interpretations.

Just as bison once roamed the prairies together, UM’s herd reflects the student, faculty, staff, alum and community partner collective journey … inspired by possibility and moving forward together toward a stronger future.

Course adds and drops: The revision period 

The registration revision period, commonly known as the ‘add and drop’ period, offers you the opportunity to fine-tune your course schedule without incurring academic or financial penalties. 

The deadline to drop a course is September 17, 2024, and the deadline to add a course is September 18, 2024. During this time, you can add a class if a spot opens or if you change your mind about a course. If a space becomes available in a course you were waitlisted for, you can register for it. You may also update your residency status in Aurora to receive a fee adjustment if applicable. 

After the revision period ends, course withdrawals will be noted on your transcript, and you will be responsible to pay for all fees for that course. For more details, visit our resources on dropping a course, changing a course, and cancelling your registration. 

Fee information 

To avoid late fees and holds on your account, ensure that your tuition is paid by the deadline of October 2, 2024, for the Fall Term. You can view your fee payment information by logging into Aurora and selecting “View Account Summary by Term Card.” For additional information, refer to Fee Payment. 

Registrar’s Office services 

The Registrar’s Office is your go-to resource for registration and academic records. Common start-of-term requests include enrolment verifications, personal information updates (such as residence status changes), and technical assistance with Aurora. 

Photo identification (ID) cards 

If you need your Student ID card, visit the Registrar’s Office, 400 UMSU University Centre, open from 9:00am – 4:00pm daily. Check in online to secure your spot in the queue and receive text notifications when it’s your turn. Your ID card is also required for obtaining a U-Pass for Winnipeg Transit.

Carla Loewen, the director of the Indigenous Student Centre, says she looks forward to Indigenous Orientation every year.

“It’s such a fun and interactive way to celebrate community and showcase the resources and opportunities available,” says Loewen. “We want to start off the academic year by highlighting the vibrant Indigenous community at UM. We hope this will foster a spirit of belonging for students looking to get involved or feel connected.”

This year’s Indigenous Orientation, hosted by the Indigenous Student Centre (ISC), will be held Wednesday, September 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the UM Fort Garry campus; and will feature entertainment, traditional games and a student resource fair – and a chance to get to know the ISC Elders and Knowledge Keepers in residence.

All activities are open to the campus community, and everyone is welcome.

Last year, the college was proud to present $200,000 worth of scholarships to students from faculties including, Science, Arts, Engineering, Asper School of Business, Nursing, Health Sciences, Graduate Studies, Law, Indigenous engagement, and University 1 students.

Our recipients go through their own academic journeys to receive these awards every year. Today we are proud to highlight two student stories about what these scholarships mean to them. 

Doris Goubran, who joined the college from high school, is studying in the Faculty of Health Sciences. She is working towards her bachelor’s, hoping to get into the College of Nursing. In a competitive field like Health Sciences, Doris not only received gratification from her scholarship this year but also proved to her that she has what it takes to follow her nursing dreams.   

“It encouraged me to keep doing and to pursue my medicine dreams that I hope to accomplish one day. Being in a competitive faculty is super nerve-racking and intimidating, but my hard work has paid off, and this scholarship proves that to me.”

Like Doris, Catherine van Reenan, a Ph.D. student in the religion department, received not only gratification from her scholarship recognition but also the opportunity to travel abroad. After hearing the news of her scholarship, Catherine can now attend one of her bucket list conferences in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she will have the opportunity to meet professionals whom she has looked up to since beginning her post-secondary education. 

“People who have written for me for this scholarship gave me validation that I’m meant to be pursuing my Ph.D. and will now help me in attending a conference that I’ve always dreamed of attending. It’s a niche to my field, and I’m excited to learn from inspiring people.”

Travelling from Africa to pursue nursing, Fatoumatta started her journey off at University 1, where she found St John’s to help her academically and meet new friends like Hamidou, one of the St John’s Residence Don’s. 

“Coming from a small place in Africa, I wanted a small community not just to meet friends but to succeed academically, and St John’s is that place for me.”  

Being an international student, Fatoumatta felt supported on campus. As she got comfortable, she quickly found that diversity was embraced at St John’s College, which made her feel at home.   

“It’s a welcoming place for everyone, no matter your background, who you are, or where you come from; everyone is accepted here. It felt like second home to be with the welcoming staff, endless opportunities, and academic support they provide to help me get through my studies.” 

As part of her experience at St John’s, Fatoumatta has benefited from the scholarships and bursaries, which were more than just financial support for her and her family.   

Receiving the Dance Memorial Bursary last year allowed her to continue building the life she wants for herself and her family, including buying fresh groceries for the holiday season and continuing her coursework to get into the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.

During our recent conversation, Raihanah (currently a fourth-year psychology student) spoke of finding a home in the residence community both as she’s worked towards her academic degree and during her three years as a Don. As she’s found her voice and become part of the community, she’s experienced the residence as a place where she could try new things and build life-long friendships. 

“The college residence has allowed me to step outside my comfort zone and build leadership and community skills. I was nervous yet excited about what it offered when I walked into the college. From the benefits students receive at the residence, like the delicious Daily Bread Café food, accessibility to events and academic help, it’s an accessible accommodation for all students.”
