The University of Manitoba School of Art Gallery is pleased to present Robert Archambeau: One Leads to the Next, a retrospective exhibition honouring the life and work of one of Canada’s most influential ceramic artists. Featuring a selection of key works in clay and on paper, the exhibition traces Archambeau’s six-decade career as an artist, educator, and mentor whose impact continues to resonate in studios across Canada and beyond.

Working in clay for more than sixty years, Archambeau developed a body of work recognized for its refinement, restraint, and technical mastery. Deeply influenced by the ceramic traditions of Japan, Korea, and China, his vessels reveal a devotion to form and process that merges discipline with intuitive experimentation. One Leads to the Next brings together groupings and variations that illuminate his ongoing investigation of the vessel—its endless potential for reinvention—and the quiet dialogue between surface, shape, and fire.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Archambeau served in the U.S. Marine Corps before completing his BFA at Bowling Green State University and an MFA at Alfred University. He taught at the Rhode Island School of Design before joining the University of Manitoba’s School of Art in 1968, where he shaped generations of ceramic artists until his retirement in 1991. His contributions to the field earned numerous accolades, including the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (2003), the Manitoba Arts Council Award of Distinction (2014), and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (2008). Archambeau was named Professor Emeritus in 2004 and passed away in Winnipeg in 2022.

Kearsey

BA (Memorial)

Vice-President (External) Emeritus

A visionary leader, Mr. John Kearsey served the University of Manitoba as Vice-President (External) from 2010 to 2022, championing the university community and our province with distinction.

John led UM to embrace our recognized circumstances–cold, far, big and a community of people at the heart of Manitoba’s success– celebrating that where you are shapes who you are and from here, you can go anywhere. The campaign shared stories of trailblazers, innovators, adventurers and explorers—alumni, students, faculty and staff. The result was that donors around the world proudly supported Front and Centre: The Campaign for the University of Manitoba, raising $626M against an ambitious $500M goal.

Today’s institutional brand, including the website, ensured that Indigenous voices, cultures and traditions were at the heart of its visual representation and storytelling. John cultivated a culture that continuously delivers outstanding and award-winning work across philanthropy, alumni relations, marketing communications and government relations to advance UM’s vision. He is recognized for giving generously to mentor members of his team, university colleagues and student leaders. He engaged meaningfully with the broader communities served by this university, ensuring that people felt welcome, encouraged, safe and connected.

The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Mr. John Kearsey the title of Vice-President (External) Emeritus.

Congratulations to all 2022 Emeriti recipients:

For many alumni, staff, faculty, and students, the appointment of John McCallum as Professor Emeritus isn’t a surprise. McCallum has dedicated 48 years to the Asper School of Business, seeing more students graduate, more alumni retire, and more deans move through the School than any faculty or staff member.

“One of the greatest joys of the kind of career I’ve had is the people I’ve had in my classes,” says McCallum, who has received numerous awards for his work such as the Olive Beatrice Stanton for Excellence in Teaching and Graduate Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching. “I spent my whole career teaching and being with people in their 20s and 30s. It’s a really fun thing to do. Forty-eight years ago, I stumbled into a classroom and found out how much I loved it – everything about it.”

Professor John McCallum will join three other Asper faculty members who have achieved the status of Professor Emeritus, a title held for life. The title of Professor Emeritus/Emerita is conferred after retirement on faculty members who hold the title of professor. Individuals nominated for the title must have rendered distinguished service to the University through teaching, research and scholarship.

McCallum began his academic career at the Asper School of Business – then called the Faculty of Commerce – in 1973. He brought to Asper a wealth of knowledge in capital markets and financial institutions, passing on his expertise to undergraduate and graduate students.

Originally, a career as a professor was never part of his plan. McCallum grew up in a family of bankers who never stayed in one place too long with various job opportunities that took them to new places. From small towns in Ontario, to Quebec, England and New York.

After college, McCallum worked for the Bank of Montreal for three years before he moved to Queen’s University to pursue his MBA. He returned to BMO briefly before working for Shell Canada. It didn’t take him long to return to school, working out a deal with Shell where he could work and pursue his PhD at the same time.

On a whim, McCallum applied to work as a professor at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Commerce in 1973.

“I found the idea of working at a university really exciting. I didn’t think it would last.”

At the time, not all faculty members were required to have a PhD to teach. Some were still working while teaching or had a previous career in business. When McCallum joined the Faculty of Commerce, he was part of one of the first cohorts required to have a PhD.

“When I started, we only had four classrooms. I did most of my teaching in those rooms for the first 12 years.” recalls McCallum. “Faculty were routinely teaching six or seven courses a year.” At the time, the Faculty of Commerce was based out of the Frank Kennedy Centre, where Extended Education is today. Due to the lack of designated space, Commerce professors were teaching all over UM in faculty buildings like engineering, education and Tier.

Prior to the development of services like the Asper Career Development Centre, faculty had to help students find summer jobs or careers post-graduation.

“Business education has changed a lot over the past 50 years,” says McCallum. “I would say in the first part of my career a lot of experiential education came from the people who were teaching the students. We were also doing more consulting and had more personal involvement in businesses.”

McCallum has been involved with various organizations like Great West Life and the Manitoba provincial government. He was also the chairman of the board for the Manitoba Hydro for a decade and on other boards such as IG Wealth Management, Wawanesa Insurance, Toromont and Fortis Inc.

As the faculty grew, classes became scattered around campus and office space was limited. The University couldn’t ignore the increasingly growing demand for more space and more staff.

In 1986, the Faculty of Commerce moved to the Drake Centre at 181 Freedman Crescent. McCallum remembers the move as a launch pad for the School’s evolution.

“We became more research oriented. Teaching demands went down, research demands went up. Programs got bigger. We needed way more administration.”

Over the next 30 years, McCallum would see more milestones like the Faculty of Commerce changing its name to the Asper School of Business; the development of new supports like the Career Development Centre and the Stu Clark Centre for Entrepreneurship; and, a remodel of the Drake Centre’s interior.

“I think academics are lucky in ways that many other careers aren’t. A few months ago, I went to a retirement party for a student who graduated in the early 80s. He had seven or so of his friends from Commerce there. They flew in from Vancouver, Toronto, and San Francisco. That connection has bound them since 1982, and it was built at Asper. As a faculty member you are so lucky to be invited to events like this.”

When asked if he had any advice for young faculty, McCallum acknowledged that a career in academia isn’t for everyone, but the key is figuring out if it’s something you really want to do.

“It’s like every other career. It is fantastic for the right person, and it’s not for the wrong person. You have got to figure it out for yourself. But for me, I can’t think of a more rewarding career.”

________

Honouring Emeriti is a private, annual event hosted by the Provost & Vice-President (Academic) at the University of Manitoba. In November, John McCallum and 16 other emeriti recipients will be honoured at the event with a parchment and their citation being read aloud.

The title of President Emeritus is conferred on an individual who has served as President of the University for at least five years. Individuals so honoured must have rendered distinguished service to the university during the term of office.

Dr. Barnard concludes his tenure as the eleventh President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manitoba on June 30, 2020 after 12 years of service. Under his leadership, and in collaboration with members of the UM community, UM experienced considerable growth, increasing both Indigenous and international student populations, achieving continual record enrolment, reaching new heights in research accomplishments and achieving unprecedented success in philanthropy through the Front and Centre campaign.

In 2011, Dr. Barnard made a formal Statement of Apology and Reconciliation to Residential School Survivors in front of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, the first leader of a post-secondary institution to do so, and he has provided steadfast leadership in listening to and building relationships with Indigenous students, faculty, and communities throughout his time as president.

“David truly embraced the idea of UM being Manitoba’s university; one that serves the community, is a leader for change and a creator of opportunity, says Jeff Lieberman, chair of UM’s Board of Governors. “His thoughtful leadership has set the stage for continued success and achievement for this institution and the people who bring it to life. We are grateful for his enduring legacy.”

On Wednesday, October 2, the University of Manitoba community celebrated the 2019 honorees which included a Chancellor Emeritus, a Vice-Provost Emeritus, a Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Professors Emeriti and Librarians Emeriti.
