We are proud to celebrate Dr. James (Jamie) Blanchard [BSc(Med)/86, MD/86] as the recipient of the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award for Academic Innovation. A dedicated leader in public health and epidemiology, Jamie’s groundbreaking research and visionary leadership have transformed the way we understand and address health disparities both locally and globally. From his early days as a rural physician in Manitoba to his influential role as a Canada Research Chair, Jamie’s innovative approach to public health challenges exemplifies his commitment to creating healthier, more equitable communities as he continues to inspire future generations of scholars and practitioners alike.

Making a difference on a local and global scale

After earning his BSc and MD from the University of Manitoba in 1986, Jamie began his career as a physician in rural Manitoba with the UM’s Northern Medical Unit. This early experience sparked a passion for public health, inspiring him to pursue advanced degrees at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) a Master of Public Health in 1990 and a PhD in Epidemiology in 1997.

After his studies at JHU, Jamie returned home and served as Manitoba’s Provincial Epidemiologist (1992-2000) and rejoined the University of Manitoba as a faculty member in the departments of Community Health Sciences and Medical Microbiology in 1996. In 2001 he relocated to India and led the establishment of several large-scale UM public health projects focused on HIV and maternal, newborn and child health. After returning from India, he founded and took on the role of Director of the Centre for Global Public Health (now the Institute for Global Public Health). Over the years, his innovative research and leadership earned him a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in 2004, and most recently, a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair — which acknowledges him by his peers as a world leader in his field. — a recognition that came with $1.4 million in funding over seven years to support his broad and impactful research. His leadership has been instrumental in establishing the UM as an international leader in global public health, securing more than $450 million in international funding for research, program delivery and technical support.

“One of the unique aspects of being at the University of Manitoba is the long history and legacy of having responsibility. The University of Manitoba has had responsibility for providing care for people who live in the North and Indigenous communities.” Explains Jamie.

In 2020, his leadership helped transform the Centre for Global Public Health into the Institute of Global Public Health, a university-supported hub that encourages collaboration across disciplines and borders. The Institute’s approach has provided a globally-recognized model for how academic institutions can play a transformative role in improving health outcomes for underserved and marginalized populations.

“There’s always been that sense that the university is not just there to do the research and the teaching, but it’s also there to make a difference,” says Jamie. “And that has influenced the way that we do our global health programs.”

Leading change in public health

Jamie’s research is both wide-ranging and influential. His international work focuses on understanding how diseases like HIV and other sexually transmitted infections spread through diverse populations, including in India. By studying transmission networks, he’s helped shape prevention strategies that are now used around the world.

Closer to home, his work has looked at why some communities in Canada face higher rates of diseases like diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease. By exploring the factors behind these disparities, Jamie has aimed to develop targeted prevention programs that can improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations.

His work bridges scientific discovery and real-world impact — translating research into effective public health programs and collaborating with policymakers and health leaders both in Canada and internationally. His dedication has helped improve health outcomes for disadvantaged communities.

Jamie’s contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2001 Frederick G. Banting Award from the Canadian Diabetes Foundation and the Rh Award for Health Sciences in 2006. He also received the Scholastic Award from Doctors Manitoba in 2013 and was named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2022.

A humble leader focused on service

Despite his many accomplishments, Jamie remains humble and focused on the greater good. His work is driven by a genuine desire to make a difference, often putting public interest above personal recognition. He is also dedicated to mentoring the next generation of leaders, sharing his knowledge and experience to inspire others. As he puts it, “In this line of work where you depend on so many people at your institution and within your teams around the world, having this honour reminds me how privileged I’ve been to able to work with such a great team and in such a supportive university environment.”

Jamie’s career exemplifies the qualities celebrated by the Distinguished Alumni Award for Academic Innovation. His pioneering research, guidance, and constant dedication continue to inspire those around him. As he shapes public health policy and practice worldwide, his legacy as a leader and innovator grows stronger. We’re proud to celebrate Jamie’s remarkable journey at the 66th UM Distinguished Alumni Awards presented by TD Insurance on September 18, 2025.

In the world of Canadian university football, few names resonate as deeply as Brian Dobie’s [BPE/74, Cert. Ed./75]. A 2025 inductee in the Football Manitoba Hall of Fame and a true Bison at the Centre, Brian’s 50-year coaching career including a 29-year tenure as head coach of the University of Manitoba Bisons Football team have left a permanent mark on the sport, the program, and the countless lives he has touched. This year, Brian is being honoured with the Distinguished Alumni Award in Professional Achievement, a fitting recognition for someone whose dedication, passion, and leadership have elevated not only the Bisons Football program but also the spirit of the university itself.

A career built on passion and perseverance

Brian’s journey with the Bisons began at a young age. “My dad took me to watch my first Bison Football game in 1968.” Brian recalls. Just a few years later Brian was on that same field, this time playing on the Bisons football team while he pursued his Bachelor of Physical Education degree in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management. After graduating, he embarked on a coaching career that would span decades and redefine excellence. His first coaching role was with the Churchill High School Bulldogs, where he led the team to three Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL) championships and solidified his reputation as a leader who could inspire greatness.

In 1996, Brian took the helm of the Bisons Football program, beginning a 29-year tenure that would make him the winningest coach in Bisons history. His dedication to scouting and recruiting has brought exceptional talent to the Bisons Football program, while his genuine care for each athlete and their families has created a foundation of trust and respect.

His accolades include six Canada West Coach of the Year awards, a U SPORTS Coach of the Year award, two U SPORTS National Championship appearances, and a coveted Vanier Cup title in 2007.

“It’s not just winning the Vanier Cup in 2007. It’s the process. It’s everything that led to it and what we went through to be up there. To me, this ring and that Vanier Cup championship quite literally symbolize the best of everything. It stands as a testament to all of our teams—those who have worked tirelessly to represent the University of Manitoba, both past and present,” reflects Brian.

Brian’s impact is evident in the success of his players. Under his guidance, 64 student-athletes were drafted by CFL teams, and two went on to play in the NFL. Many of his former players have also become coaches, carrying forward the lessons they learned from Brian through every province in the country, including four CFL coaches.

A legacy of leadership

What truly sets Brian apart is his unwavering commitment to his players. Beyond the wins and accolades, he fostered a family-like culture that prioritized personal growth and community. His tireless efforts in recruiting, fundraising, and mentorship have created a legacy of support that extends far beyond the field.

“Our ultimate goal is to develop these men and women. No question about it. Winning is a byproduct of the entire process.”

Brian’s dedication to building a thriving football program has been a cornerstone of his leadership. From the days when the team’s facilities included a tin shed locker room, Dobie’s vision for growth and excellence has driven every step forward. “It was a huge thing that happened for that stadium to get built on our campus. It elevated our program to new standards and exposed our athletes to a whole new level of professionalism. Brian vividly recalls the electrifying atmosphere during the inaugural game, describing how “There were 12,000 people. It felt like there were 222,000 people!” That roar not only celebrated a new chapter for UM Football, but a testament to Brian’s relentless dedication to elevating the program and creating a legacy for future generations of athletes.

Brian’s greatest accomplishment is the profound impact of the program beyond the field, saying, “We’re part of something that counts — that matters.

Throughout his remarkable career, Rick Duha [BComm(Hons.)/82] exemplified what it means to lead with vision, integrity, and a deep commitment to community. As a trailblazer in the manufacturing and colour technology industries, a dedicated advocate for education and economic development, and a passionate supporter of the University of Manitoba, Rick’s accomplishments are nothing short of extraordinary. His journey from a small family business to a global enterprise, combined with his dedicated service to his community and alma mater, makes him a deserving recipient of UM’s Distinguished Alumni Award in Lifetime Achievement.

Early foundations and entrepreneurial spirit

Rick’s story begins in Winnipeg, but it is rooted in a rich family legacy of resilience and ambition. His relatives, who emigrated from Hungary, started the family business in their garage, driven by hard work and a dream of building something lasting. This humble beginning laid the foundation for a family tradition of entrepreneurship and innovation. Rick first stepped into the family business as a student and became Duha Group’s Managing Director in 1991. Under his leadership, the company evolved from a modest local operation into a global powerhouse specializing in innovative colour marketing tools. Today, the Duha Group operates across eight countries on five continents, serving customers in more than 130 countries. With over 275 employees in Manitoba and more than 500 worldwide, Rick’s vision and strategic leadership have not only propelled the company’s sustained growth and success but also highlight the vital importance of maintaining a strong presence in Manitoba.

“I’m proud that we made the decision that Winnipeg was the best place to be in the Americas for our business.” Rick reflects. “You’re never more than one or two degrees of separation away from understanding or being able to access key decision makers in the community. You can ask questions, you can learn from your answers, you can understand them better.”

Innovation and industry leadership

Rick’s entrepreneurial achievements are complemented by his pioneering contributions to the colour manufacturing industry. Recognizing the importance of continuous improvement, he established the Duha Center of Excellence, developing methodologies adopted globally to streamline processes and enhance efficiency. His insights into process improvement and quality management have set new standards in the industry, influencing organizations far beyond his own company.

“We grew organically through technology. We grew innovation. But we also grew with relationships and with partnerships.” Rick states, emphasizing the importance of the team behind the work. His leadership in this area has earned numerous accolades, including awards from the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and industry recognition for excellence in manufacturing and leadership.

Global impact and strategic direction

Rick’s influence extends well beyond Manitoba. Rick is an accredited Corporate Director (earned at Asper School in 2021) and serves in that capacity for companies in the UK, Australia, Germany, Singapore, US and China. His leadership in these diverse markets underscores his global reach and demonstrates his capacity to adapt, innovate, and inspire across cultures and industries.

His involvement with YPO, the world’s premier peer network of CEOs, further represents his leadership. As a longtime member, he served on their Global Board from 2015 to 2018. Following that service, he moved to YPO’s management side, serving as COO from 2020 to 2022, Rick directed teams in 34 countries and supported over 33,000 global CEOs. His tenure was marked by transformative initiatives, including the creation of the Global Concierge program, which enhanced member engagement worldwide. His dedication to fostering leadership excellence has made him a respected figure in the international business community.

Dedication to community and education

Despite his international success, Rick remains deeply rooted in his Manitoba origins. His service to the community is evident through his active participation in local initiatives and his support for educational causes. In 2016, he established the Duha Family Graduate Scholarship in Business at UM, helping to nurture future generations of business leaders. His involvement in the Rod Senft Family Business Conference and support for St. Paul’s High School and United Way of Winnipeg reflect his ongoing commitment to community development.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rick and the Duha Group pivoted their operations to produce large batches of hand sanitizer, donating proceeds to the Health Science Centre Foundation. “It was a moment to come together as a community and give back,” he recalls. In moments of crisis, his steadfast leadership powerfully demonstrates his deep dedication to service and the betterment of his community.

Rick’s long-standing relationship with UM exemplifies his commitment to giving back. As a member of the President’s Advisory Council and a former campaign team member for the Front and Centre campaign, which raised over $626 million, Rick has demonstrated his belief in the transformative power of education. His support for the Asper School of Business and the establishment of the Duha Family Graduate Scholarship highlight his dedication to fostering academic excellence.

A legacy of inspiration and impact

Rick Duha’s legacy is one of transformative leadership, innovation, and community service. His journey from a family business to a global enterprise, coupled with his unwavering dedication to Manitoba and UM, embodies the qualities celebrated by the Distinguished Alumni Award in Lifetime Achievement.

His story inspires current and future generations to pursue excellence, serve others, and lead with integrity. As Rick recently assumed the role of Chair of the Business Council of Manitoba, his influence continues to grow, shaping the economic and social fabric of the community.

As we celebrate Rick’s accomplishments at the 66th UM Distinguished Alumni Awards presented by TD Insurance on September 18, 2025, UM is proud to recognize him as a true leader and visionary. His contributions have left an indelible mark on Manitoba, Canada, and the world.

Honouring Excellence: Tréchelle Bunn, a leader in education, advocacy, and Reconciliation

Tréchelle Bunn’s [BA/23] journey at UM showcases her academic excellence and community dedication. As a proud member and newly elected Chief of the Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Criminology, made the Dean’s Honour List, and was the student speaker at the 2023 Traditional Graduation Pow Wow. Now pursuing a law degree at Robson Hall, she is a passionate advocate for Indigenous rights, reconciliation, and social justice. From founding the Reconciliation Run to speaking at the United Nations, her work aims to uplift Indigenous voices and drive meaningful change. We proudly celebrate Tréchelle as the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for Outstanding Young Alumni.

Education and community engagement

As she wrapped up her second year in the Juris Doctor program at Robson Hall, Tréchelle advocates for systemic reform aimed at reducing the over-incarceration of Indigenous peoples and improving access to legal resources.

“Education is a tool for change,” Tréchelle explains. “It’s about more than just personal growth—it’s about uplifting those around us and creating pathways for future generations.” Her time at UM not only honed her academic skills but also cultivated her leadership abilities. She credits the university’s supportive environment for helping her balance academics, athletics, and advocacy work, shaping her into a well-rounded leader.

Her leadership roles extend to serving as Vice President of Internal Relations for the Manitoba Indigenous Law Students Association, co-chair of the Provincial Suicide Prevention Strategy Advisory Group, and board member for organizations like the Nellie McClung Foundation and the Southern First Nations Network of Care. Trechelle went from serving as the Southern Chiefs Organization’s Youth Chief to most recently being elected Chief of the Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation. Making her the first woman elected as Chief in her nation and the youngest serving Chief in Manitoba. These positions exemplify her dedication to community well-being and systemic change.

Reconciliation in action

Tréchelle’s commitment to reconciliation and Indigenous rights is evident through her innovative initiatives. Her most notable project, the Reconciliation Run, is a 26-kilometer walk from the former Birtle Residential School to Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, which evolved into an annual half-marathon held on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This event – honouring her grandparents who were residential school survivors – has grown to attract participants from across Canada and serves as a powerful symbol of healing and remembrance.

Proceeds from the Reconciliation Run fund the Reconciliation Run Scholarship, which supports the recruitment of Indigenous athletes to Bison Sports and creates opportunities for future generations and encourage the use of sport as a powerful tool for reconciliation. “This scholarship removes barriers and opens doors,” Tréchelle emphasizes. “It’s about giving Indigenous youth the opportunity to thrive in sports and education—something I am deeply passionate about.”

Athletic achievement and mentorship

Tréchelle’s athletic pursuits as a member of the Bisons Women’s Hockey Team exemplify her dedication to excellence and teamwork. Beyond her contributions on the ice, she co-launched a mentorship program aimed at Indigenous youth, encouraging participation in sports and education while celebrating cultural heritage. This initiative reflects her belief in leading by example and fostering opportunities for Indigenous youth to succeed.

Her athletic journey has been more than personal achievement; it’s a platform for community empowerment. “Being part of the team taught me the importance of resilience and collaboration,” she shares. “I want to inspire young Indigenous athletes to see that anything is possible with hard work and support.”

Advocacy and future impact

Her advocacy extends to international platforms as well. Tréchelle has addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, raising awareness about issues such as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit individuals. Her voice amplifies the urgent need for systemic change and justice.

Tréchelle’s impactful work has garnered numerous awards, including an Indspire Award, the CBC Manitoba Future 40 Award, the First Peoples Law Indigenous Student Scholarship, and the UM Emerging Leader Award. Tréchelle’s accomplishments are a testament to her dedication to her community, her education, and her advocacy for Indigenous rights. Her story inspires others to pursue their passions while uplifting those around them.

She reflects on her journey with humility: “Mentorship and leading by example are my guiding principles. I want to show young Indigenous people that their dreams are valid and achievable.”

As she continues her legal studies and advocacy work, Tréchelle remains committed to fostering Reconciliation, justice, and opportunity for Indigenous youth. “My goal is to give back, to be a silent leader and lead by example. If I can inspire even one person to believe in themselves and their potential, I know I’ve made a difference.”

As we celebrate Tréchelle’s accomplishments at the 66th UM Distinguished Alumni Awards, presented by TD Insurance, UM is proud to recognize her as a shining example of what it means to be a leader, advocate, and changemaker.

Kristie Pearson [BPE/96] is more than a community leader—she’s a force of compassion and action. Her life’s work is a testament to the power of showing up, listening deeply, and creating spaces where everyone feels seen and supported. What sets Kristie apart is her ability to inspire others to see themselves as part of the solution. “There is a real need right now for us all to work together.” Her words are a call to action, reminding us that change happens when we lean in and do the work together. This year’s recipient of the University of Manitoba Distinguished Alumni Award in Community Service, Kristie’s dedication is being celebrated for her impactful contributions. From her early days as a student in physical education and a track athlete at UM to her current role as a driving force behind Linking Hope, Kristie has consistently turned her vision of a better world into tangible change.

Kristie credits UM as playing a pivotal role in shaping her outlook. “UM is an incredible connector,” she notes. “It has strong ties to both business and community. That’s where real connections and growth happen.” Her reflections underscore UM’s role as a hub for fostering community and service.

The heart behind Linking Hope

Kristie’s journey to founding Linking Hope began with a simple yet profound realization: many people want to help but don’t know where to start. The organization connects businesses and individuals with surplus goods to local grassroots agencies that can directly distribute these resources to those in need. “I’m really just a linker of people and a supporter of others doing the really hard front-line work.” she says modestly. What started as a series of emails to connect friends with local charities has grown into a thriving organization that simplifies giving and volunteering for busy individuals. Linking Hope isn’t just a nonprofit—it’s a movement that reminds us all that even small acts of kindness can ripple outward and create lasting impact.

Raising voices, building bridges

Kristie’s work is deeply personal. As a mother to Cameron, a non-binary child, she understands the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels valued. “Understanding doesn’t happen overnight,” she reflects. “It’s a journey that takes time to absorb.” Her advocacy for the LGBTQ2S+ community is rooted in this belief, and her efforts with the Rainbow Resource Centre have helped raise over $900,000 to support critical programs, such as counselling.

Her commitment to amplifying marginalized voices extends to her work with Clan Mothers Healing Village, an Indigenous-led initiative providing healing and education for women who have experienced systemic trauma. Kristie’s ability to listen, learn, and act with humility has made her a trusted ally in spaces where trust is hard-earned.

Mobilizing communities with heart

Kristie’s leadership is marked by her ability to bring people together. “I remember taking my first marketing class at UM in commerce. It was one of my electives, and the professor there wowed me. He showed me that marketing and communications can really shift opinions and change perceptions,” she says. “And that’s what I try to do—bring people together around causes that matter.” As Co-Chair of the United Way Winnipeg’s 2023 campaign, she inspired a team of volunteers to raise $22.8 million for over 125 community agencies. Her work on the Downtown YMCA-YWCA’s $15-million capital campaign is another example of her ability to rally support for causes that matter. In summer 2025 Kristie will be honoured with the Order of Manitoba, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the community and her unwavering dedication to service.

But perhaps her greatest legacy is the way she lives her life—with kindness, curiosity, and a deep belief in the power of connection. As a wife, mother of three, and community leader, Kristie shows us that it’s possible to balance personal and professional responsibilities while still making time to lift others up.

A call to lean in

Kristie’s work is a reminder that we all have a role to play in creating a more inclusive and compassionate world. “The word ally should be used as a verb, not as a noun,” she says. Her words challenge us to move beyond passive support and take active steps to make a difference.

Kristie Pearson’s life is a testament to the power of purpose and connection. Her ability to inspire, mobilize, and lead with heart makes her a deserving recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award in Community Service. But more than that, her story is a reminder that each of us has the power to create change—one act of kindness, one moment of listening, one step forward at a time.

As we recognize Kristie’s accomplishments at the 66th UM Distinguished Alumni Awards on September 18, 2025, let us also take up her call to lean in, to listen, to act and continue the work of building a world where everyone feels seen, valued, and supported.

If you’re looking to celebrate Kristie along with this year’s inspiring 2025 recipients, join us for an evening of fun, community, and legacy. Get your tickets today and be part of the Distinguished Alumni Awards Celebration of Excellence Gala, presented by TD Insurance.

Dr. Harvey Max Chochinov [MD/83, PhD/98] is the recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award for Academic Innovation.

At a time when people are at their most vulnerable — at the end of their lives — Dr. Harvey Max Chochinov’s work has been there to help them feel comforted. He is one of the most prolific and respected researchers in supportive and palliative care in the world today, and his research-informed best practices are recognized globally for enhancing the psychological well-being and quality-of-life of patients with advanced disease. For all his compassionate, critical and globally renowned work as a pioneer in the field of the emotional dimensions of end-of-life care, Dr. Chochinov is being honoured by UM.

“I chose to study at the University of Manitoba because Winnipeg was home. I did my undergraduate work here, and then entered the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. After finishing my psychiatry residency, I went on to complete my doctoral studies in the Faculty of Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba,” says Dr. Chochinov. “Having been privileged to lecture at academic institutions around the world, I now feel the quality of education at the University of Manitoba is second to none. Our students receive extraordinary medical training, setting them up to pursue whatever goals they have in mind, wherever their professional pathway may take them.”

Dr. Chochinov has long maintained a connection with UM, where he is currently a Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry, and has supervised students in the faculties of medicine, psychology, nursing and community health services for more than 30 years. He has also served as a global emissary for UM, delivering more than 500 invited lectures at prestigious institutions ranging from Harvard, Cornell and Johns Hopkins to Stanford and Oxford.

One of Dr. Chochinov’s most ground-breaking achievements through his research was bringing dignity to patient care in tangible, practical ways. More specifically, Dr. Chochinov’s research has resulted in concrete methods of measuring dignity-related distress, effectively eliciting personhood in clinical practice, and founding Dignity Therapy, a narrative-based psychotherapy technique. Dignity Therapy has undergone 10 systematic reviews, with scores of international clinical trials and publications affirming its merits of mitigating distress and enhancing patient quality of life.

“At the start of my research career, I learned that loss of dignity was the most frequent reason cited by physicians who had helped their patients end their lives, but nobody had every studied what dignity meant to patients,” says Dr. Chochinov. He and his team discovered that patients’ perceptions regarding how they are seen by their healthcare providers was the most significant predictor of sense of dignity. “This was an epiphany, which said good end of life care was not just about what you did with the patient or what you said to the patient, but fundamentally, was how you saw or appreciated your patient.”

Dr. Chochinov has closely studied the patient experience in supportive and palliative care, in turn improving psychological well-being and quality of life while reducing suffering and enriching the care of those with advanced illnesses across the globe. As a Senior Scientist at the Paul Albrechtsen Research Institute CancerCare Manitoba, he has explored the experience of life-limiting cancer through his research, covering elements including depression, hopelessness, suffering, prognostic awareness, suicidality, desire for death, will-to-live, sense of burden to others, quality of life, dependency, spirituality, and existential distress. He has also researched the patient-healthcare professional relationship, such as: elements of effective communication; issues related to equity, diversity, inclusiveness; and core efficiencies of dignity conserving care.

“A more recent area I’ve dug into is the idea of the platinum rule, which says do unto others as they would want done unto themselves,” says Dr. Chochinov. “The platinum rule acknowledges that our perception of patients may be skewed or bias. We might, for instance, make assumptions about someones suffering or quality of life, when that is really more about us and our narrow lived experience, and not about the actual patient.”

As evidenced by the number of firsts he has achieved, Dr. Chochinov has been a trailblazer throughout his career. He was the first Canadian to complete a fellowship in psycho-oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre. He then became the first psychiatrist to receive funding from the National Cancer Institute of Canada and later, the first awarded a Canada Research Chair in Palliative Care.

Additionally, Dr. Chochnov’s book, Dignity Therapy: Final Words for Final Days (Oxford University Press) received the American Publisher’s Prose Award for Professional and Scholarly Excellence in Clinical Medicine. He also co-founded Canadian Virtual Hospice, the world’s largest web-based repository of information and support for people living with advanced illness, their family members, as well as clinicians, educators, and researchers.

“What I’ve enjoyed about being an academic is the creativity of the process, the rigour that it affords and the opportunity to address large problems that are core to the human experience,” he says. “The thing that I’m aware of now more than ever is that research doesn’t fulfill its full potential if there isn’t uptake. I see the lecturing and teaching I do internationally as an important part of knowledge dissemination. I wouldn’t be where I am if not for the researchers who came before me. I’m so delighted there are now young people engaging with my work and discovering where the field of palliative care will go next.”

For his work in psycho-oncology and palliative care, Dr. Chochinov has received countless honours. He has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada and was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. He has Fellowships in the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, as well as Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology and the Arthur M Sutherland Award from the International Psycho-Oncology Society.

Continuing his list of firsts, Dr. Chochinov is the only psychiatrist to receive the FNG Starr Award, described as the Victoria Cross of Canadian medicine, the O. Harold Warwick Prize, for significant advances in cancer control, and the Canadian Cancer Research Alliance Outstanding Research Award. This year, he will also receive the Distinguished Alumni Award for Academic Innovation.

“It’s wonderful to be recognized by one’s colleagues and by a university that provided me educational opportunities, which have been the foundation for my entire career,” says Dr. Chochinov. “Oftentimes, the feedback one gets is from afar, and it’s gratifying to know that people here at home and at the University of Manitoba have taken notice. I don’t take what the university has given me for granted, and feel proud, honoured and humbled to be the recipient of this award.”

The 2024 University of Manitoba Distinguished Alumni Awards Celebration of Excellence presented by TD Insurance will be held September 19, during Homecoming 2024. Get your tickets now as the event is always a sell-out!

Steve Kroft [BA/88] is the recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Winnipeg has long been known as the “Gateway to the West,” yet Steve Kroft has shown that our city can be the gateway to the world. He has always aspired for this city and its people to be healthier and more prosperous, and he has inspired Winnipeggers not only through his ambitious entrepreneurship but also through his devotion to community service. Now he’s being honoured by UM for his impressive body of work.

“I wish it were named the Lifetime-So-Far Achievement award,” laughs Kroft. “Honestly, it’s very humbling. There’s a whole bunch of people behind the scenes who are really doing the heavy lifting, and so there’s always a little bit of guilt with it as well because as they say, it takes a village. I’m very proud that to receive it from my university in my city, so it means a lot.”

Kroft’s first interactions with UM were as a student, graduating from the Faculty of Arts in 1988. “I loved my classes,” recalls Kroft. “I met a professor that I really developed a great relationship with, which is often someone’s story. In my case, it was Geoff Lambert in Politics, who has since passed away. Sounds cliché, but I really broadened my horizons in terms of friend groups. I met so many different people, different kinds of people.”

He also pursued his Juris Doctor from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where he had a successful commercial litigation practice. However, Kroft ultimately decided to leave law and enter business back home in Winnipeg. In 1997, he joined Conviron, a Winnipeg-based company founded by his father that makes controlled environments, providing researchers and entrepreneurs the ability to grow plants indoors. Steve excelled in this new arena. Under his leadership, the company expanded its reach to over 90 countries and was named Manitoba’s Exporter of the Year by the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters in 2012. In 2016, it was named Life Science Company of the Year by the Life Science Association of Manitoba.

It was really as a local entrepreneur that Kroft’s connections with UM became more significant, first and foremost as an employer. “I was just always so impressed with, especially in the last several years, the students that we recruited from the University of Manitoba.”

In the community, Steve is Director Emeritus of the Business Council of Manitoba and a member of the Board of Directors of The North West Company and the True North Youth Foundation, where he also serves as Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee. He is also the Past Chair of the Board of CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, and he has served the boards of Manitoba Hydro, Assiniboine Park Conservancy, St. John’s-Ravenscourt, Prairie Theatre Exchange and the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. In 2022, Steve was the recipient of the Sol Kanee Distinguished Community Service Medal, which is the highest honour bestowed on a member of Manitoba’s Jewish community, recognizing outstanding dedication, leadership and service within the Jewish and general communities over many years.

He has remained connected to UM throughout his life, and he is currently a member of President Benarroch’s Advisory Council and of The Associates of the I.H. Asper School of Business. He is also a former member of The Young Associates and served as a member of President Emeritus David Barnard’s Front and Centre Campaign Team. While Steve was majority owner, Conviron also made generous gifts to the University of Manitoba.

“I learned a lot about the university during that time,” recalls Kroft. “When I was involved as chair of the Business Council, the discussions were around how we can better align graduates with the needs of the business community. We have a very unique situation here, in terms of where we are with reconciliation and Indigenous communities and water. There’s a lot of things that I think the University of Manitoba is extremely well positioned to lead in. It’s an exciting time.”

In every endeavour, Kroft’s aim is to bring the most benefit to others. At Conviron, he dreamed of his family’s firm helping the world address mounting challenges, such as growing food in a rapidly changing climate. He realized on this front the biggest impact he could have would be to let go. In 2022, he sold the family business to Madison Industries because he knew it could do more good for more people if it was bolstered by a much larger company. In 2023, Steve was inducted into the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (Manitoba) Hall of Fame, which celebrates visionaries who have demonstrated leadership in the development of their company(ies) and success in their chosen industry.

“My job is to surround myself in business with people who are smarter than I am and then just provide a bit of direction and get out of the way and let outstanding people do outstanding things. And I I was able to do that in my business, which allowed me to do other things that sort of really fuel my tank. Today, I’m on five different boards. I’ve no intention of stopping that, my commitment to our city and our province is strong.”

Steve Kroft is a big dreamer and devoted Manitoban who has spent his life using his talents to benefit others. The future is no exception.

“American author Dorothy Parker said that ‘curiosity is the cure for boredom’,” says Kroft. “There is no cure for curiosity and so I am a very curious person, so I’m a lifelong learner. I look forward to learning other things. I sort of feel I’ve got another chapter to write.”

Dr. Joss Reimer [MD/08, MPH/13, Medical Resident/13] is the recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement.

During the pandemic, hundreds of physicians across this province rose to the occasion. But, there are few physicians in Manitoba for whom this is more true than Dr. Joss Reimer, leader of the Provincial Vaccine Task Force during the COVID-19 Global Pandemic.

Dr. Reimer reflects on that turbulent and high-profile time. “I think what I’m most proud of is how people have told me that I had a calming effect on them, because people were so scared during the pandemic. There was information changing all the time. And that for the most part Manitobans felt they could trust in what I was saying, that is such an honour, privilege and responsibility, that I will carry that with me for the rest of my life.”

Because of her steadfast courage, more doses per capita of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered into the arms of Manitobans than any other prairie province. From local community groups, counsel from Indigenous leaders, input from medical advisory committees, and by adapting delivery strategies to meet the needs of the people, Dr. Reimer truly brought Manitoba together through her vaccine rollout.

Looking back at the early chapters of Dr. Reimer’s life and story, she always wanted to ‘change the world’, with medicine as her initial driving goal and UM her school of choice.

“The University of Manitoba has a very strong medical school,” says Dr. Reimer about getting her medical degree. “I know in Manitoba we often undersell ourselves, but this medical school is very clearly strong when it comes to training individuals in infectious diseases, training in rural and remote medicine in Indigenous health. I had no doubt I would get good training to become a physician.”

With her passion extending beyond healthcare and her eye-opening discussions with public health care physicians, Dr. Reimer returned to UM once again to complete a Master of Public Health. This passion and training led to a career focused on infectious diseases and drug harms. In this role, she led Manitoba through multiple outbreaks and notably, created a provincial Naloxone distribution program. Dr Reimer excelled in this position and was quickly promoted to Medical Director for Public Health for Winnipeg.

“That’s the kind of thing that I’m really talking about in public health,” says Dr. Reimer. “Where you have to go out and look at the community and see what are the struggles, what are people having a hard time with and then find solutions. So being able to be part of creating the first city-wide Naloxone program and then the first provincial-wide program from Manitoba, was really exciting work – to be able to take a situation where people were literally dying and give them a glimmer of hope, give them a physical solution they could carry around with them.”

Although her work on the Naloxone program was critical, more high profile was Dr. Reimer’s time as the Medical Lead for Manitoba’s Vaccine Taskforce during the Covid 19 pandemic. Dr Reimer worked long hours, 7 days a week for months communicating daily, in multiple languages, with the public and leading the clinical work of the taskforce to ensure that Manitobans had access to both the vaccine and the information they needed.

Dr. Reimer has stayed closely connected to UM throughout the years by teaching the next generation of medical professionals. She’s also been a vocal advocate for mental health, sharing her own experiences and struggles through ‘What’s the Big Idea?’, UM President Benarroch’s podcast.

“At least 20% of Canadians have a mental illness,” says Dr. Reimer. “And while things are clearly getting better, they’re still a lot of stigma. In the medical world, there’s a lot of fear when you’re in the position as a physician to admit any sort of vulnerability. And as I’ve gotten further in my career, the risks for me to admit that kind of thing are much lower. But it’s still risky for people who are earlier in their career in their training, and so I wanted to, you know, use the platform that I have to try to share some positive messages about how you can be successful with a mental illness.”

Dr. Reimer has been one of the most important medical voices in our province, and her leadership continues to result in the saving of lives and long-term health for Manitobans and for all Canadians as the incoming President of the Canadian Medical Association.

“I’ve always wanted to make the world a better place,” says Dr. Reimer. “I want to change things. I want to be part of solutions and what better way than to represent physicians and get to speak to those decision makers at the federal level, but also at all the provincial and territorial levels.”

“I’m really passionate about physician wellness and reducing administrative burdens because that’s the type of work that really leads to burnout,” explains Dr. Reimer. “In Manitoba at least 1/3 of physicians are talking about reducing their hours, retiring or quitting altogether. So, anything we can do to improve physician wellness is going to improve retention, which is even more important than recruitment. Recruitment is wonderful, but we want to keep the people we have here. To represent the voice of physicians – to me means representing the needs of the community as well.”

Dr. Reimer is humbled by the announcement that she will receive the 2024 UM Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement.

“Someone actually told me this is usually an end of career type award,” laughs Dr. Reimer. “I hope that’s not true! I’ve had two degrees through the University of Manitoba, plus finished my residency here. So, this is a really special place. To be recognized by a place that’s been such a part of shaping me and my career – I can’t think of a greater honor.”
