Be creative with how you mark up your board, whether you choose to use circles, checkmarks or even emojis. When you post it to your page, tag three friends to encourage them to become more sustainable, and don’t forget to tag @sustainableuofm.

World Vegetarian Day

Thursday, October 1

Instagram

Celebrate vegetarianism and learn how it benefits humans, other animals and our shared earth. Check out the OOS (@SustainableUofM) and UM Dining Services (@uofmdining) on Instagram for activities and interactive discussions. Make a difference by:

Waste Reduction Week

Monday, October 19 – Sunday, October 25

Facebook, Instagram and Twitter

This week will focus on engagement on key waste management issues and material streams: textiles, e-waste, food waste and plastics. The week will kick off with the release of the UM Waste Survey, followed by #DYK (Did you know?) facts and ways to extend the lifecycle of products found in the key streams.

Sustainable Halloween

Saturday, October 31

Although this year will look different due to the pandemic, there are plenty of creative ways to celebrate protecting your health and the planet. Here are some recommendations on how to make a spooky and special event while reducing the amount of waste associated with this year’s festivities:

Make your costumes from old clothing and textiles. Not only will this save resources, but it will also save you money!

Make your own treats to share with your household; the options are endless – like adding toppings to your popcorn for a movie night.

Host a virtual pumpkin carving contest. Don’t forget to put that pumpkin to use: make a pumpkin pie or roasted pumpkin seeds.

Create a Quarantine-O-Ween, whether that’s looking for treats in the backyard, a virtual Halloween-themed trivia night or a scary movie night.

Going Green social media contest

Post a comment on the @SustainableUofM Instagram explaining what changes you’ve made this month, like the post and tag a friend – and you’re entered to win! You could win one of three zero-waste prize packs, which includes a bamboo utensil set, produce bags, tote bag, water bottle and a camping mug.
