June 4, 2018 — 
This week, commuters across Canada are signing up for Commuter Challenge 2018, a week-long event encouraging businesses, organizations, and individuals to ditch the car and choose more sustainable commuting options. The University of Manitoba is encouraging all staff, faculty, and students to participate this year. If you haven’t registered yet, there are a bunch of reasons to consider participating! All you have to do is consider biking, walking, bussing, or carpooling the week of June 3-9, logging your commute, and you will be entered to win some super awesome prizes!

A group of 12 students from grades nine through 11 at Victor Sammurtok School had a unique opportunity with the arrival of a pair of Winnipeg scientists in Chesterfield Inlet earlier this month.

Last year in May, 2017, a unique conference titled "Building Bridges Between Canada's Indigenous and Newcomer Groups" was held at Thunderbird House in Winnipeg. The event resulted from discussions on Canada’s 150th and the conflicting senses of pride, frustration, pain and hope alongside the important work of welcoming and successfully settling newcomers to Canada; as well as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action that mandated a more inclusive history of Indigenous experiences and the history of residential schools in the newcomer information kit, citizenship test and oath.

“Birds vs. Windows” is being presented in order to educate the public about the devastating impact of window collisions on bird populations, as well as how to prevent them and what to do with injured birds. This outreach event is part of NSERC’s Science Odyssey.

Give your old items to someone in need and go enjoy your summer! That is what student residence were told once the winter term exams wrapped up. The Give & Go campaign is a partnership between the Office of Sustainability and Residence Life, in efforts of reducing waste during the busy mid-April residence move out. Throughout the two-week move out window, students were able to donate more than 4,000 pounds of items that potentially would have ended up in landfill.
