Virtual Reality-Based Teaching Skills Program – Effective Communication: How to Have Better Conversations with Your Students

Date and time: Wednesday, January 8 and Thursday, January 9, 2025

Embark on an immersive skill development journey in our comprehensive Virtual Reality-based teaching skills program designed to enhance communication strategies. During the program, faculty and instructors (graduate students are also welcome) will explore effective techniques that are applicable to various educational contexts. Participants are given the option to practice communication skills in a safe, judgement-free environment that incorporates role play and Virtual Reality-based simulations before applying them in their teaching and learning environments.

Deficit Thinking and Strengths-Based Approaches in the Classroom When Working With Indigenous Students

Date and time: Wednesday, January 15, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

This half-day workshop will define deficit thinking and how harmful it can be to Indigenous students. Using case studies and time for participants to work together, we will cover how historical events and policies have shaped deficit thinking, and how this impacts Indigenous students in education spaces, and ways of overcoming this unhelpful thinking pattern. The workshop will focus on strength-based strategies and best practices to implement in the classroom.

Manitoba Academic Integrity Network (MAIN) Speaker Series

Date and time: Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 9:00 AM to 9:55 AM

The Centre is excited to host the 2024-2025 Manitoba Academic Integrity Network (MAIN) Speaker Series, a collection of six professional development opportunities related to academic integrity. A Certificate of Completion will be awarded to individuals who register and attend all six sessions in this series. Session 3: Transparency vs. Equity: Ethical Dilemmas in the Responsible Use of AI Tools in Science

Tomáš is an assistant professor at the Department of Machine Learning and Data Processing at the Faculty of Informatics and a member of the Ethical Committee for Research at Masaryk University, Czechia. He is President of the Board of the European Network for Academic Integrity. He is also a vice-chair of the Bureau of the Council of Europe’s Pan-European Platform for Ethics, Transparency, and Integrity in Education (ETINED), and a deputy head of the Working Committee on Ethics in Scientific and Pedagogical Work within the Council of Higher Education Institutions in Czechia. His research activities involved plagiarism detection and prevention, academic integrity policies and ethical use of artificial intelligence in education. He has led several national and international projects on academic integrity, namely plagiarism prevention. Since 2013 he has been organizing conferences on this topic. He is a certified VIRT2UE research integrity trainer.

Teaching with Technology

Date and time: Wednesday, January 22, 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

With an iPad (or Android tablet) connected to a data projector, you can turn any classroom on campus into a truly multimedia experience for your students. This workshop will introduce you to the hardware (iPad and Android tablets) and different third-party Apps that can replace classroom technology, such as slide projector, whiteboard, multimedia player, and document camera. You can also post the classroom notes and other materials to UM Learn for asynchronous learning. Different third-party apps that can improve your teaching will be demonstrated. The iPad Pro will be used to showcase, but educators can find similar apps and features on Android tablets.

Monthly meetings
Join our monthly meetings to connect with colleagues involved in experiential learning across UM and explore best practices and challenges in experiential learning.

Experiential learning in Large Classrooms
Experiential learning, which emphasizes hands-on, active engagement, often poses logistical and pedagogical difficulties when scaled to larger groups. In this session, we’ll explore some of the challenges involved in building EL into large courses, hear from a panel of instructors with experience in this area, and chat about potential strategies to keep large courses experiential.

Planning Your Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Study

Date and time: Friday, January 29, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Are you ready to take the first steps in developing your Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) study? In this hands-on workshop, attendees will acquire foundational knowledge of SoTL principles and methodology, and begin to outline a SoTL project, including a preliminary plan for data collection and analysis. Potential challenges and practical solutions to these challenges in SoTL research will also be discussed. To make the most of this workshop, attendees are encouraged to come prepared with an area of curiosity in mind.

Effective Graduate Student Supervision

Date and Time: Thursday, January 30, 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM

This workshop will review strategies that can help in supporting graduate students throughout their program. Each graduate student is unique and will follow a different path through their degree and into their career. We will discuss how to effectively advise students, monitor their progress and provide mentorship.

Universal Design for Learning in Practice: Optimize Relevance, Value, and Authenticity

Date and time: Thursday, January 30, 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

Join us for the last Thursday of each month in an ongoing series, where participants will review discreet elements of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Participants will work together to develop pedagogical practices that align with the UDL principle being discussed that month.

Topic: This session will focus on CAST’s UDL principle of optimizing relevance, value, and authenticity and how it can be directly applied to pedagogical practice. There will be a brief presentation of the core elements of this principle followed by a question-and-answer session where participants can collaborate with the facilitator to develop their practice.

The College of Rehabilitation Sciences recently developed a “smart suite” model apartment inside the Health Sciences Centre. Equipped with state-of-the-art assistive technology, the suite helps educate and train students to enhance the well-being of older adults and individuals living with disabilities.

The futuristic kitchen – featuring height-adjustable counters and appliances that can be controlled with a mobile app – can be used to assess ergonomics.

The goal is to support aging in place and safe independent living.

YuJa Video and Panorama Digital Accessibility are constantly adding new features to help you make your work as accessible as possible.

YuJa Video

New Microsoft PowerPoint ribbon add-On: The YuJa Software Capture application can be installed as a Ribbon within Microsoft PowerPoint to provide users with a more seamless recording experience. The Ribbon will allow users to automatically sync the start and end of the recording with their presentation session.
Browser Capture Studio now supports Apple Safari: With Safari version 14 supporting the MediaRecorder API, the Browser Capture can now be used with Apple Safari.
Advanced media search is now available: The Advanced Search Console is focused on providing users with the ability to seamlessly filter through Titles, Folders, Metadata, Comments, Owners, and more.

Panorama Digital Accessibility

Reprocess all documents within a course: Admins and Instructors who wish to re-generate Alternative Formats and Accessibility Reports for a course may do so with the click of a button. Simply access your Course Report or Content tab within the Panorama LTI app and select Reprocess Course.
Instructors can now hide alternative formats: Instructors can now choose to enable or disable student access to the Alternative Formats menu for individual files.
Real-time accessibility improvement suggestions for color contrast and font size: Suggestions for color contrast allow Content Creators to resolve WCAG 2.1 color contrast issues by choosing from a recommended selection of complementary text or background colors. Font size issues that could affect readability will automatically be detected and easy-to-use recommendations to adjust the text size are provided.

Panorama Digital Accessibility – math-related

Users can now convert all text files to LaTeX: Panorama can now convert text-based files to LaTeX. This includes the ability to recognize and convert math equations within documents, whether they be directly embedded into the document or included as an image.
New alternative math formats support for printed and handwritten math equations: Panorama now supports converting documents containing math equations into audio files and clear text (i.e. numbers and symbols to words) to improve readability.

Faculty invited to attend technology and teaching town halls

As UM contemplates the future of online course delivery, faculty perspectives are a key priority. The Joint UM/UMFA Committee on Technology, Teaching and Learning is working to hear about faculty experiences and identify faculty concerns and areas for support when it comes to online, hybrid and blended forms of course delivery.

You are encouraged to attend one of four 90-minute town halls to share your views. Your participation is important because your feedback and suggestions will inform the committee’s report and recommendations on the future of technology, teaching and learning at our university.

The town halls will be specifically seeking answers to the following questions:

Question one: What is your experience with online (DE), hybrid, or blended forms of course delivery modes at UM and what have the impacts been for your teaching, research and service?
Question two: What are your concerns about any future teaching or learning using online, blended, distance and hybrid modes of delivery?
Question three: On what criteria and through what process should decisions about mode of delivery be made at UM?
Question four: If you were to teach using one of these delivery modes, what supports would you want to see in place?

iClicker to launch grade syncing Monday, July 4, 2022

No more chasing students to click the link!

For instructors who sync their grades between iClicker and UM Learn, the new iClicker Roster and Grade Sync (RGS) functionality launches Monday, July 4, 2022.

iClicker Roster and Grade Sync allows instructors to easily retrieve the student roster from UM Learn (Brightspace) into iClicker Cloud and sync iClicker polling scores with the UM Learn course’s gradebook.

Migrating mid-course

If you are already using iClicker for a course you are teaching, you do not have to migrate to this new iClicker. The iClicker you set up for your course will continue to work normally. If you would like to migrate to the new iClicker mid-course to take advantage of the new grade syncing feature, please book an Ask an Expert session with the team at The Centre and they will walk you through the migration.

Panorama accessibility tool launches in UM Learn

Panorama is now live in UM Learn to help you make your course materials as accessible as possible. Panorama checks how accessible your files are and supplies accessible alternative formats for all your files including accessible PDF, high contrast, text to speech, braille and audio files.

How Panorama helps instructors

Panorama not only assesses your material, it guides you through suggestions of how to improve your course material’s accessibility. Then it’s up to you how you want to proceed. You are the only person who can access your accessibility reports – no one else will see or evaluate you on them, and using Panorama is totally optional. For best performance, we recommend installing the Panorama extension only on Chrome, Firefox and Edge browsers.

Your two favourite video-based platforms can now work together seamlessly. Once you set up the UM Zoom to YuJa Video integration, you can store, share and edit your UM Zoom recordings in YuJa Video. Watch this quick YuJa video to help you set up the UM Zoom to YuJa integration.

YuJa Video will also caption your UM Zoom recordings, making them more accessible. Once the UM Zoom recording is imported into YuJa Video, you can add quizzes and track student progress through the video.

New Webex app launches May 2, 2022

At The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, we are constantly working with our partners to improve the learning technologies we offer. On May 2, 2022, changes and improvements are coming to Webex.

New Webex app launches – make sure to update before the first day of class

Beginning May 2, 2022, the Webex Meetings app will be replaced by the new Webex app. The new Webex app allows you to continue attending or hosting Webex meetings, plus enjoy other features like chat and customizable layouts. The Webex app delivers the best continuous collaboration experience across meetings, messaging, calling, polling, Q&A and webinars.

Please make sure that after May 2, you access Webex before the first day of class. Updating to the new Webex app can take 5 to 10 minutes or longer depending on the speed of your internet connection.
