CBC Nova Scotia: Lawyer warns ‘integrity of the entire system in jeopardy’ if rising use of AI in legal circles goes wrong

Earlier this week, a B.C. Supreme Court judge reprimanded lawyer Chong Ke for including two AI hallucinations in an application filed last December.

Hallucinations are a product of how the AI system works, explained Katie Szilagyi, an assistant professor in the law department at University of Manitoba.

ChatGPT is a large language model, meaning it’s not looking at the facts, only what words should come next in a sequence based on trillions of possibilities. The more data it’s fed, the more it learns.

Earlier this year, there was a mass cold-shouldering event—by way of software update. These are the times we live in. Replika is an AI chatbot, launched in 2017. Users could customize an avatar, choosing its name, skin tone, age and more, and selecting a relationship status. The default and only free option was friend, but by upgrading to the paid version, users could opt for an AI sibling, girlfriend or boyfriend, spouse or mentor. Then they chatted, by text (free) or voice (paid). Paid users could also spice things up, engaging in erotic roleplay and getting NSFW selfies from their Replikas.

As first-year students at the University of Manitoba get their bearings around campus, they’re also navigating recently introduced guidelines on the use of powerful new artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT — and the number of cases of plagiarism using the app have started to climb.

At the start of the year, there were virtually no such cases, said Francois Jordaan, a U of M academic integrity specialist.

But he’s seen several cases a week over the latest summer session, he said.
