Be sure to research the organizations and career opportunities thoroughly so you are able to have focused conversations about your areas of interest. Beyond allowing you to make informed decisions about how you want to build your career, being knowledgeable about an organization is the key to making your resumé stand out in a pile of qualified applicants. Get a feel for what the employer is seeking by talking to them at the Career Fair. Ask about the top skills or experiences they are seeking in new hires.

Career Services also offers career fair prep sessions so you can learn how to effectively connect and network with employers. Check the ‘Prepare for the UM Career Fair‘ section on the website or register on UMConnect. Need help with your resumé? The Resumé Learning Centre can help – email your resumé to cs[dot]receptionist[at]umanitoba.ca and make an appointment with a member of the Career Services team to ensure your marketing materials are the best they can be. The better prepared you are in advance of the Career Fair, the more successful you will be. There are also plenty of online resources to support your preparation. Connect with more than 70 employers seeking to recruit UM students for summer and part-time positions, and future graduates for full-time employment. Learn about current and upcoming career opportunities with some of the largest employers in Manitoba, such as McCain Foods, NASF Canada, Bayer powered by Impres, KGS group and Richardson International. Whether you are looking for a job or just getting a sense of what’s out there in the world of work, attending a career fair is a great opportunity to explore the connections between your degree, skills and experiences and potential career goals or direction.

For example, talking with employers and industry partners gives you a sense of the skills and competencies employers in particular fields are looking for now and in the future. Having these conversations can help you choose courses and experiences that will help you build the skills and competencies required for your field of interest. Visit the Experiential Catalogue to browse and search for experiential learning courses that help you develop these skills, competencies and experiences through hands-on and real-world learning.

Lastly, keep in mind that employers at the ASE Career Fair will be looking for students to fill summer, part-time and new graduate full-time positions. If you are looking for employment, bring multiple copies of your resumé to give to employers. Career Services is providing Career Fair Preparation workshops throughout September to help students prepare for this yearly event. Check out dates and workshops available through the ASE Career Fair page. Registration and a comeplete workshop list is through UMConnect. Career Services also provides online employment resources including the Resumé Learning Centre which educates students on resumé and cover letter development and provides samples. After review of the resources, students can receive personalized support by using the online Support Request Form.

The 2023 ASE Career Fair is a collaboration among UM Career, Community and Experiential Learning Centre (CCELC), the Faculty of Agriculture Student Organization (FASO) and the University of Manitoba Engineering Society (UMES). All UM students and alumni are welcomed and encouraged to take advantage of this free, drop-in event!

Lots of programs, events, and activities have been planned outside of formal classes. One of the highlights that I am really excited to share with you, is the return of the rink on the Quad at the Fort Garry campus! Beginning January 13^th, grab your friends and your skates, and head over to the Quad for some wintertime skating fun between classes!

UMSU is also hosting Frost Fest between January 9^th-20^th. From the 9^th-13^th there’s free breakfast at 9:30am on the 1^st floor UC and a snow sculpting competition taking place on the Buller Lawn every day. They have lots more planned – visit @studentsofumsu on Instagram for more details.

As always, there are many personal and academic supports available for all undergraduate and graduate students throughout the term.

• If you are a new student, check out UM Commons, a site filled with resources and helpful tips to support you in making a successful transition to the University of Manitoba.
• If you are a new international student, the International Centre is holding a number of welcome sessions for new international students from January 9^th – 19^th, including a late orientation session for those who were not able to attend on January 5^th.

UM Libraries is now offering many non-textbook course materials via Reading Lists in UM Learn at no cost to students. If you have a perceptual disability, screen-reader friendly and alternate format are also available through Student Accessibility Services.

Need to print? UM Libraries provides access to printing from a library computer or from your personal device.

UM’s Annual Career Fair co-hosted by Career Services and the Asper School of Business returns to an in-person format January 17^th-18^th. Connect with employers, explore potential career opportunities, network with the business community, and learn how your formal education and out-of-class experiences help you to prepare for future employment.

Are you interested in an intercultural experience on campus? Applications for the Intercultural Leaders program close on January 11^th and the Language Exchange program closes on January 18^th.

Did you know that UM has international exchange partnerships with 50 institutions in over 20 destinations? International exchanges are outstanding opportunities for you to fulfill your course requirements while gaining important intercultural competencies, deepening your understanding of issues that transcend borders, and gaining new insights and perspectives in your field of study. Consider applying to participate in an international exchange – the application deadline is January 31^st!

Calling all grad students! Three Minute Thesis/Ma these en 180 secondes applications are now open ! These competitions are unique opportunities for graduate students to showcase your research to a wider audience across disciplines within the University, and to the broader public, with the possibility of winning some great cash prizes.

Let’s protect the herd. As our healthcare system continues to be strained, UM has extended its mask mandate for the Winter Term. Protect yourself and those around you and always wear a mask when indoors on all UM campuses. Free masks will be available to all students during the first week of classes. Stop by one of the tables set up in the Frank Kennedy tunnel, UMSU University Centre, Fletcher Argue hallway, and Engineering atrium. You can also find free masks at the Libraries.

Make sure to focus on your wellness. Whether you want to add some tools to your self-care toolkit or need immediate help, there is support for you throughout your studies, regardless of your level of need.

Boost your physical and mental health with Recreation Services. As a student, you have access to state-of-the-art fitness facilities in a welcoming and inclusive environment, conveniently located on campus. To activate your student gym access, simply log in to your Aurora account, fill out the gym waiver, and you’ll be notified when your pass is active. It’s that easy!

Affordable dental care is available at the Bannatyne campus! The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry’s general clinic offers exceptional dental and oral health care at a lower cost. Under the supervision of practicing dentists and dental hygienists, UM dental and dental hygiene students provide services that cost up to 50 percent less than private practices. The 2019 ASE Career Fair is fast approaching. Attending a Career Fair is an opportunity to boost your job prospects as well as gain valuable career information that will help you design your career journey!  

Start building the career you want by learning more about the world of work. Research the employers attending in advance of the fair to discover key projects and priorities of each organization and identify potential career pathways you may want to discuss. Plan ahead so you can decide who to talk to first and develop questions focusing on what you would like to know about their place of work, competencies they are looking for and opportunities that might be available now and in the future.

Take advantage of connecting with industry professionals early in your degree. Learn about the knowledge, skills and attributes employers are looking for now and in the future.  Equipped with this new knowledge you can seek out courses and experiential learning opportunities that will support your professional development in areas you need to grow. Initiate conversations about training opportunities you should take advantage of, associations you should become a part of and how the knowledge and skills you are developing in the classroom and through co-curricular activities link to various occupations.

Looking for a job can be a stressful experience. To help you out, UM Today has assembled some tips and resources for those preparing to visit the career fair.

Know what you are looking for:

Knowing what you are looking for will help you wade through the hundreds of potential employers on hand at the career fair. Are you searching for a full-time, part-time, co-op, or summer position? Do you want this job to provide work experience that is relevant to your education? You could also be using this career fair to network with potential future employers and industry representatives. Still others are still searching for information on potential career options.

Be prepared:

“Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” – Alexander Graham Bell.

• In the days leading to the career fair, take a look at what companies will be there and do some research on the businesses you are interested in.
• Have copies of an updated resume ready to share with some potential employers.
• Have questions ready for employers.

First impressions count:

During a career fair, you will have 15-30 seconds to make a good impression on a potential employer. Dress for success! Business-casual dress would be a smart decision when attending a career fair.

 Final tips:

• Be prepared to answer questions and to demonstrate your skills with examples of your relevant experience.
• Don’t wander in groups. You want to meet employers and ensure you stand out.
• Get there early. Most employers are keen and full of energy at the beginning of the career fair.
• Meet as many employers as possible. Use these experiences to build confidence and to practice introducing yourself and asking great questions.
• Get business cards from employers for follow up.

The Career Fair runs January 17 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. and January 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the second floor of UMSU University Centre. The annual event provides students and alumni with great opportunities to learn more about career ideas and explore occupational options.

The Career Fair allows students to feel like all of their hard work at school is connected to amazing opportunities in the world of work. It is also a great opportunity to learn about industry, network, or even land a job says Rebecca Balakrishnan.

As a career consultant with the U of M’s career services, Balakrishnan helps students transition from students with dreams to graduates with occupations. She says the Career Fair is an important tool for this.

“Preparation is everything at any Career Fair. Take the time to research the attending employers in advance. From there, reflect on how your experiences and skills meaningfully connect to the needs of organizations you’re interested in. Based on this, you can prepare a tailored resumé and consider questions for each employer,” says Balakrishnan.

This is the third year University of Manitoba Alumni Relations will provide free headshots, available to both students and graduates of the U of M. The photos—to be used in LinkedIn profiles—will be taken by one of the university’s professional photographers.

“Alumni Relations is thrilled to partner with Career Services once again as a way to help current students and alumni pursue their career goals” says Tracy Bowman, Director of Outreach and Engagement. “These two groups often look to Alumni Relations to connect them with alumni established in their careers, general networking opportunities, or for information on new and emerging industries offering employment that matches their skill sets. We are happy to provide support whenever we can.”

Since the LinkedIn platform is used so widely in the professional world, this opportunity to get a high-quality photo can help ensure you make a great first impression.

“When you’re looking for a job, employers will Google you. LinkedIn allows you to ensure that a professional page controlled by you shows up in the results,” says Balakrishna. “In the modern labour market, people get recruited through LinkedIn, so a profile that highlights your best qualifications could even land you a job. LinkedIn is also a great tool for reaching out to potential professional contacts, sharing your ideas by commenting on discussions, or linking to the rest of your online professional presence such as your blog, YouTube channel, website, or e-portfolio.”

Last year nearly 300 students and alumni took advantage of the free service, helping to enhance their LinkedIn profiles. LinkedIn’s research indicates that profiles with a photo are 14 times more likely to be clicked on. Ensuring you have a friendly, professional image encouraging people to click on your profile is key says Balakrishnan.

“Beyond this, your photo can help remind your Career Fair connections of who you are and what you talked about. By the end of the two-day fair, they will have encountered a sea of faces, and your photo can help jog their memory of you.”

All students currently enrolled at the U of M are also encouraged to stop by the Alumni Relations booth at the Career Fair to enter the $1,000 BMO Bank of Montreal Tuition Draw.
