We have entered a new era where astrophysicists and nuclear physicists can work in concert to piece together the puzzles that astrophysical observations present. Technological advancements in nuclear physics techniques have increased the precision of earth-based measurements, and advancements in computing power allows for increasingly more complex theories to be calculated.

For astrophysicists, modern facilities like The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and NASA’s Neutron star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER) have opened whole new windows to view and study the Universe and its most exotic stellar corpses, particularly neutron stars. These developments have pinpointed the major role of neutron stars and their collisions in the creation of heavy elements like gold and platinum, providing a more complete understanding of the make-up the matter in our universe.

Join our expert panel of physicists and astronomers for a conversation exploring the frontiers of the ultra-small and mega-large in this next era of precision nuclear physics and multi-messenger astrophysics.

It is common for those working toward physical health goals to face barriers that limit their progress due to the added challenge of addressing these related mental health needs.

A failure to address mental health needs in youth contributes to the risks of socio-emotional and academic problems, as well as increasing the risk for chronic illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes. On April 26 a panel of UM experts will present new multidisciplinary approaches to support youth with higher body weight.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, an international team of researchers led by experts at the University of Manitoba examined conditions that contributed to a rise of racism across North America. With funding from two Federal Government Grants, the researchers engaged a panel of 7,500 residents in Canada, USA, and Mexico as part of a long-term survey, from March 2020 through October 2022.

This three-country research team undertook the study to better understand the extent to which social, economic, and mental health disparities increased during the pandemic. On March 28 the panel will discuss their findings and address how the pandemic, and related social and economic inequalities, influenced a rise in racism against Indigenous Peoples, immigrants, refugees, and other racialized groups.

On March 15, as part of International Brain Awareness Week and in conjunction with the Manitoba Neuroscience Network, UM researchers will gather to share their findings with a public audience, and answer questions.
The answers to these questions are more complex and fascinating than you may have imagined. Join us on Wednesday, Mar. 16, at 7 p.m. when UM Café Scientifique series features a group of UM scientists who are studying how animals think and communicate. They will share their latest research findings, stories from the field and discuss how learning about the brains of animals can help us to better understand our own.

About UM Café Scientifique

The UM Café Scientifique series brings together experts with non-researchers (you, me, neighbours and friends) in a relaxed atmosphere (wherever you are joining us from virtually!), to learn about their research and the questions it raises. Cafés are scheduled throughout the academic year, on a weeknight, and encompass topics that reflect the breadth of research underway at the UM. They are hosted and organized by the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International).

On Thursday, Mar. 3, the UM Café Scientifique series features a group of expert panelists in discussion about allergies and feeding of infants, and the new approaches that use ‘active introduction’ rather than avoidance.

Join us online at 7 p.m. for “Feeding Baby: What, when and how to introduce foods,” moderated by Mae Santos, Registered Dietitian and master’s student from the Protudjer Lab.

Use the online viewing link at 7 pm on Thursday, Mar. 3 to watch the live stream.

Until recently, guidelines prescribed what foods parents should avoid feeding their infants, with the aim, in part, to prevent food allergies. Findings from the Learning Early About Peanut study caused pediatric societies worldwide to leap from active avoidance to active introduction.

Although active introduction may reduce the risk of certain food allergies, uptake of this approach has been slow, partly due to confusion around the dramatic shift.

Join our expert panel as they discuss this new approach, how it may prevent food allergies and hear practical guidance for families with infants.
