Every day of the year, we can take meaningful action to help our mental health and those around us who might be struggling. This time of the year can be particularly stressful for many, with the cold of winter looming, the holidays behind us, and the short days spent indoors. It is essential to talk about mental health and mental illness, share resources, and connect with others who may be struggling.

On Jan. 25, UM will join more than 200 post-secondary institutions across Canada to participate in the world’s largest mental health conversation on Bell Let’s Talk Day. The campaign’s goal is to make sure we keep listening and talking.

This year’s Bell Let’s Talk theme is “Let’s create positive change,” highlighting the mental health crisis Canadians face and the ways we can make meaningful change. Bell Let’s Talk encourages everyone to always think about CHANGE:

Choose a mental health organization to learn about or support

Help a friend, family member, or colleague struggling with their mental health by learning how to support them

Ask about how your workplace or community is creating change for mental health

Nurture your own well-being by practicing and learning mental health strategies

Get involved in a mental health initiative or organize an event to support mental health

Engage in conversations about mental health to fight the stigma

Share your actions using #BellLetsTalk and help inspire others to join the movement to create positive change

The conversation must continue if we hope to beat the stigmatization around mental health and mental illness. To find out more ways to help end the stigmatization around mental illness, read about how you can join UM in the conversation.

The University of Manitoba (UM) has received a $100,000 grant from Bell Let’s Talk Post-Secondary Fund to support mental health initiatives on its campuses. UM is one of 10 universities in Canada to receive such funding and it will go towards establishing a new Student Wellness Centre (SWC).

UM is proud to offer extensive and accessible mental health and wellness supports for the campus community, but the physical infrastructure of the campuses can be a challenge for resource visibility. The Student Wellness Centre will serve as a hub for students to access a wide range of Health & Wellness and Healthy U services.

“With support from Bell Let’s Talk Post-Secondary Fund, the University of Manitoba will create a Student Wellness Centre where students can connect, learn, and enhance their mental health and well-being,” says Laurie Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students). “Supporting student health and wellness is integral to providing an exceptional university experience. We thank Bell Let’s Talk for its generous support, which will enable us to enhance our peer support programming and help students navigate essential student support services.”

Students will be set up to better maintain their wellness at UM and will be encouraged to prioritize their well-being as students. The SWC will not only encourage students to engage with current services, but will also enhance future services by facilitating cross-unit collaborations and programming delivery.

Campus Mental Health Facilitator Arlana Vadnais and Health and Wellness Educator Bryanna Barker applied for the grant, and are thrilled to improve connectivity between students and the supports available to them, with help from Bell Let’s Talk.

“Our intention is to provide and support a safer space where students can inquire about wellness topics and feel represented and connected while doing so,” says Barker. “We will be inviting student feedback as we implement and assess this project. We want to ensure the centre is developed through collaboration between students, staff and faculty. Our vision is to have a space reflecting a student perspective, ensuring we maintain best efforts in meeting students where they are at.”

The SWC will be staffed by student (peer) health educators and supervised by the health & wellness educator, who is a registered psychiatric nurse. Other students in training such as those in practicum placements will also have the opportunity to develop crucial skills as future professionals in health promotion. The grant will also go towards creating pop-up SWCs at the Bannatyne and William Norrie campuses.

This project will be a significant step in destigmatizing mental health care and wellness practices, building on the UM’s commitment to provide accessible, inclusive, respectful and holistic support for our community.

The conversation around mental health will take centre stage during the 12th annual Bell Let’s Talk campaign Jan. 26. This occurs at a time when many are feeling heightened stress of yet another surge in COVID-19 cases due to the Omicron variant, a return to remote working/learning and on top of it a bout of especially cold and snowy winter weather.

UM Today spoke with Dr. Andrea Piotrowski, assistant professor in the department of clinical health psychology, Max Rady College of Medicine and regional medical specialty lead for clinical health psychology with the WRHA, about the mental health impacts people are facing right now and ways to keep your mental health on track.

What kind of effects are you seeing on the mental health of people in Manitoba with the COVID-19 pandemic dragging on as we near two-years in?

We’ve heard a lot about not only COVID fatigue, but caution fatigue, which are slightly different from each other. Many people are just tired of COVID and want things to be back to normal. Caution fatigue, on the other hand, occurs when people are getting tired of following the restrictions intended to reduce the risk of contracting or transmitting COVID. People’s reactions to the pandemic will vary with some who struggle with making adjustments and others who ‘go with the flow.’

Overall, there have been numerous Canadian surveys throughout the pandemic showing higher rates of self-reported symptoms of depression and anxiety. Not only have people struggled with the uncertainty of the pandemic, but also with financial loss, increased isolation and illness.

What are some things people can do to maintain or improve their mental health?

Many people will already be familiar with or engage in activities that they have found helpful throughout the pandemic. Research has also provided us with helpful strategies to better manage our mental health.

Maintaining a good routine. Although it might seem basic, focusing on good eating habits, exercise, and getting enough sleep is important in managing stress, anxiety, and depression.

Mastery & accomplishment. Engaging in pleasurable activities and those where mastery can be achieved can be helpful. These include activities where you can see the end product and feel the accomplishment, such as learning a new language, playing an instrument or baking. We can remember at the beginning of the pandemic, sour dough bread was all the rage and yeast was hard to find!

Connecting with others. Connections with family and friends is important though sometimes challenging to maintain during a pandemic with restrictions. Take the opportunity for virtual visits or game nights with family and friends. My fiancé and I play cribbage with our parents and other games with our siblings virtually, which has led to even more visiting than prior to the pandemic.

Helping others. We know from the literature that being altruistic or helping others actually helps to improve our own mood. Giving to others could include shoveling your neighbour’s driveway or making a phone call to somebody who might be lonely.

What do you think is the benefit of public campaigns such as Bell Let’s Talk day?

These types of public campaigns can help to reduce stigma. There has not been a time when we’ve heard so much about mental health. Someone who is struggling may feel validated and not so alone with all the media coverage on mental health.

These campaigns also often highlight a broad range of mental health resources, based on a person’s level of need. These resources can include self-help books and websites, peer support organizations, ways to access mental health specialists (e.g., psychologists or psychiatrists) and crisis services.

In the meantime, while we are in this pandemic, it can be helpful to acknowledge that we are in it together and scientists are learning more in an effort to bring this pandemic to an end. We are in a much different place than we were in March 2020 and we continue to make strides while living during this ‘temporary normal.’

The University of Manitoba takes pride in prioritizing the health and wellness of all students, staff and faculty. Caring for the whole community greatly benefits the experiences of all members.

As part of its commitment to support student mental health and wellness, the university applied to the Bell Let’s Talk Kickoff Grant program, which was launched to help post-secondary institutions implement the new National Standard for Mental Health and Well-Being for Post-Secondary Students and enrich their mental health programs. The University of Manitoba was amongst other universities and colleges across Canada to receive a $25,000 Kickoff Grant.

The Kickoff Grant will specifically contribute towards the further development of the Implementation Toolkit, a guide to mobilizing the new university mental health strategy, Success Through Wellness 2.0. The Kickoff Grant will be key in refining the Implementation Toolkit into an interactive and user-friendly web resource that will be accessible to the whole university community. Smaller units within the university, from academic departments to student groups, will be able to use it as a framework to create, adapt, and strengthen mental health initiatives prioritized in Success Through Wellness 2.0.

Success Through Wellness 2.0 serves to update the inaugural Success Through Wellness Strategy launched in 2014. After the first five years of its implementation and through consultation with stakeholders, Success Through Wellness 2.0 is being built on knowledge and input from a variety of perspectives. As part of the consultation process, all university members are encouraged to provide their own input in the feedback form, to better understand the viewpoint of all people and to better inform UM mental health initiatives moving forward.

“The university realm is really an ecosystem – we’re all impacted by those around us,” says Kristin Smerchanski, a student and the Mental Health Strategy Assistant. Smerchanski has played a significant role in the development of the Implementation Toolkit.

While the new Strategy and the Implementation Toolkit are in the works, they’re built on the core value of an inclusive community and encouraging ongoing discussions around mental health, with a focus on affirming community strengths and supporting more positive change.

“Whether it’s for smaller units or the university as a whole, building the community in healthy, inclusive and diverse ways is the priority,” says Arlana Vadnais, the Employee Wellness Specialist & Campus Mental Health Facilitator. “We want to recognize the unique needs of different groups within our community and empower those groups to act on those needs.”

Every part of a university experience, from teaching and learning, to researching and supporting discovery, can be nerve-wracking at the best of times. A university is by its nature a challenging environment. From my own university experiences, and as a father of two recent university graduates, I empathize with the vulnerability and struggle that often accompanies academic life. When COVID-19 entered the equation, all our usual stresses were amplified. We have all been dealing with mental burdens beyond the norm.

So, let’s talk.

The University of Manitoba will again join more than 200 post-secondary institutions across Canada for a conversation about mental health on Bell Let’s Talk day, which this year is on Jan. 28. I encourage everyone in our community to take part in this day as we collectively work to remove the stigma of talking about, and addressing, mental health issues.

UM is a community that exists to help one another thrive. Though mental health challenges can be complex, asking for help should be simple. We should all feel welcome to pursue the support we need.

If you see someone in distress, or if you feel—even to the slightest degree—that you want to speak to someone, reach out today. UM offers access to professionals who are highly trained and dedicated to offering help. Asking for help is one of the strongest things we can do, and asking others if they need help can be one of the most meaningful acts of compassion.

In April of 2020, one of our faculty members, Roberta Woodgate, a Canada Research Chair in Child and Family Engagement in Health Research and Healthcare, released a study that revealed what it is like for many youth living with anxiety. And in speaking with UM Today she said something that stuck with me. She said, “Many people assume anxiety is not a real thing, but it is very real and it’s not something you ‘just get over with’.”

That is why UM developed our mental health strategy Success Through Wellness after extensive consultations with community members and experts. The program offers an array of resources and it continues to expand. This year, for instance, the Student Counselling Centre hired three new counsellors and one intake/triage specialist.

I’m proud of the UM’s holistic strategy to mental health services and I want our community to use them. And as we continue our work in providing an outstanding experience for all our community members, let us be mindful of each other, and encourage each other to seek out ways to maintain positive mental health no matter where we are currently working or studying.

Let’s talk.

Join the conversation:
#BellLetsTalk
#umanitoba
#umstudent

Once again the University of Manitoba will be among the more than 200 post-secondary institutions across Canada to join the mental health conversation with Bell Let’s Talk. The campaign inspires people to get involved and raise awareness about the importance mental health.

In its tenth year, the campaign’s theme is Mental Health: Every Action Counts. This year from January 27-31 UM will fly the Bell Let’s Talk flag at its Fort Garry campus.

“We applaud Bell’s efforts in this area,” says David Barnard, President of the University of Manitoba. “And as we continue our work in providing an outstanding student experience we will be mindful of the challenges that may be faced and encourage students to seek out ways to maintain positive mental health through on-campus services.”

Join the conversation on Bell Let’s Talk Day!
On January 29, Bell will donate 5 cents to Canadian mental health programs for each of the following communications, at no extra cost to participants beyond what they would normally pay their service provider for online or phone access:

Talk: Every mobile and every long distance call made by Bell wireless and phone customers

Text: Every text message sent by Bell wireless customers

Twitter: Every tweet and retweet using #BellLetsTalk, featuring the special Bell Let’s Talk emoji, and every Bell Let’s Talk Day video view at Twitter.com/Bell_LetsTalk

Facebook: Every Bell Let’s Talk Day video view at Facebook.com/BellLetsTalk and every use of the Bell Let’s Talk frame

Instagram: Every Bell Let’s Talk Day video view at Instagram.com/Bell_LetsTalk

Snapchat: Every use of the Bell Let’s Talk filter and every Bell Let’s Talk Day video view

YouTube: Every Bell Let’s Talk Day video view at YouTube.com/BellCanada

In 2019, Bell Let’s Talk Day generated 145,442,699 messages across all platforms, growing Bell’s funding for mental health by an additional $7,272,134.95. Since the first Bell Let’s Talk Day in 2011, Canadians and people around the world have sent a total of more than 1 billion messages of support for mental health.
