The University of Manitoba’s International Centre (IC) has expanded its services on the Bannatyne Campus! After being put on pause during COVID, in-person International Student Advising has returned to the Bannatyne Campus. This means that students on the Bannatyne Campus now have in-person access to the full suite of IC services on-site, eliminating the need to meet over Zoom or make the trek to the Fort Garry Campus.

Similarly to the Fort Garry Campus, international students can seek general support as well as immigration support from advisors at the Bannatyne Campus through Student Services. International Student Advisors (ISAs) provide support and guidance on the status of international students and help students navigate the legal and intercultural barriers that students may face during their transition at UM.

ISAs can meet with students to discuss study permits, post-graduation work permits, and answer questions regarding immigration. Recently, ISAs have received the Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor designation. Speaking to ISA Rebecca Irvingshe explained that this designation “has allowed us to legally give students immigration advice and guidance (within the scope of our designation) on their individual situations and provide more clear and direct information during our Advising meetings.”

Through the International Centre, ISAs also offer immigration information sessions and provide resources for students online and in-person. By meeting with an ISA, students can get assistance navigating both UM and government services and understanding their status as international students.

In 2024, international students accounted for roughly 21% of the student population and roughly 20% of first-time admissions, according to an institutional analysis by UM. These trends are increasing, and the IC and the ISAs play an important role in supporting this population. Referring to the expansion of advising to the Bannatyne campus, Irving states that “these enhanced services from our ISA team have been important to better help our growing international student population, especially in light of the numerous changes that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have recently made that impacts study permit holders in Canada.”

The ISA service at the Bannatyne Campus also helps mitigate one of the barriers that some international students may face, which is simply knowing that these resources exist and being able to find them. Through social media and referrals by other supports, such as the Student Affairs Connect Desk on the 1st floor of UMSU University Centre, international students are referred to the IC and ISAs. By adding International Student Advising to the Student Services at Bannatyne offices, the in-person presence ensures an equitable level of support.

For international students who may not have seen an advisor recently, Irving stresses that students should seek out an advisor as early as possible: “even if a student isn’t sure if they’re coming to us at the right time, or if we can answer their entire question, we encourage students to reach out as soon as they have a question so that they can plan ahead and we can make a referral to another UM office, if needed.”

Students at either campus wanting to make an appointment with an International Student Advisor can do so through the International Centre. Students at the Bannatyne Campus can also reach out to Student Services at Bannatyne via e-mail at bcstudentservices[at]umanitoba[dot]ca or by phone at 204-272-3190.

The International Centre is located in Room 541 UMSU University Centre and is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and can be reached via e-mail for inquiries at international[at]umanitoba[dot]ca.

Since her bachelor degree in science, Grace Okunnu has come a long way.

As she completes her first year at the Max Rady College of Medicine at the Bannatyne campus, she reflects on the journey that has gotten her to where she is today.

From the beginning of her journey at UM, Grace was introduced to St John’s college by her older sister who was also involved at the college. She explored the benefits of the student membership, academic support, scholarship opportunities, and the sense of community she felt while studying for her undergraduate degrees.

“St John’s has been helpful throughout my academics. I studied at St John’s when I was on the Fort Garry campus, and now, even at the Bannatyne campus, I can still be involved with SJC and their scholarship opportunities.”

As a 2023 SJC scholarship recipient, Grace remains connected to SJC, regardless of being on the Bannatyne campus.

She adds, “It’s been a very unifying and community-building environment. I made new friends during my undergraduate degree at St John’s, with whom I’m still connected today.”

As she moves forward into her second year of medicine coming up, Grace looks to pass on the lesson she has learned to fellow students to never give up after the first try. “If you don’t succeed the first time, it doesn’t mean it won’t happen.”

To learn more about our student membership and upcoming scholarship opportunities, visit our website.

If you’re planning on parking at the Fort Garry or Bannatyne campuses, you’ll have a new option for mobile payments: HONK.

Starting immediately, drivers can use their phones to pay for parking using the HonkMobile app, available for both iPhone and Android, or by scanning the on-site QR codes found in UM parking lots.

How it works

After either downloading the app or scanning a QR code, drivers will be asked to input their licence plate details, select desired parking duration and choose from a variety of rate options.

For users who prefer not to create an account, scanning a QR code provides a guest checkout option. Once set up, users can opt in to receive text message reminders before parking expires, with the option to extend time right from the app or website.

Both the app and QR code options allow drivers to pay for parking using Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Interac Debit and all major credit cards.

About HONK

HONK was founded in 2013 after CEO Michael Back and his children missed several innings of a baseball game due to parking availability and payment issues. Its contactless parking payment services are in use at more than 10,000 locations across Canada and the US.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out directly to the Office of Parking and Transportation at parking@umanitoba.ca.

Many UM students have only attended classes online over the past two years and are now looking forward to coming to campus this summer and fall. To help all returning and newly admitted students feel at home on campus, the Student Life Office is pleased to offer in-person Tours throughout the summer.

Beginning May 25, 2022, and running all summer, the Student Life team will offer weekly tours of the Fort Garry campus. The upper-year student tour guides will highlight key buildings, study spots and the office students will need to know about. Tours will last 75-90 minutes and will run on Wednesdays or Thursdays at 1:30 p.m., starting at room 225 University Centre. For the complete schedule and to register for a tour, please visit Career Connect, events calendar. For more details, please do not hesitate to contact Student Life at studentlife@umanitoba.ca, call (204) 474-9093, or drop by 225 University Centre.

The University of Manitoba continues to keep your safety top of mind. Masks are mandatory and must be worn in all indoor spaces on all our campuses to protect the community against Covid-19. While KN95 masks are highly recommended, 3-ply medical masks (minimum ASTM Grade 2) are also acceptable. Tour attendees and tour guides will also maintain physical distancing and screen themselves for COVID-19. Details are available at umanitoba.ca/coronavirus/students.

Calling All Returning Students

If you are a returning student and are looking for an opportunity to volunteer this summer, the Student Life office has opportunities to be involved in the campus community, including Orientation volunteer positions and the New Student Peer Mentoring Program. These opportunities will offer students a chance to build leadership skills by offering the student leadership workshop development series, as well as the opportunity to gain recognition for their work as leaders through the Emerging Leader Award.

With some members of the UM community returning to campus for the upcoming academic year, this long-awaited milestone calls for a celebration to welcome the new year ahead of us.

On September 7 and 8, from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, kiosks will be offering free coffee and snacks to university students, faculty and staff at both the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses. These kiosks are located on the main floor of the Bannatyne Campus’s Brodie Centre beside the elevators, and on the main floor of the Fort Garry Campus’s UMSU University Centre in front of Campo.

Each location will provide free coffee throughout the day, free donuts in the morning and free popcorn in the afternoon. Visitors will also find a photo booth where people can take photos and directly share on social media. While there, you can also learn everything you need to know for a safe return to campus.

As we continue to shift back to on-campus learning and working, we hope that you’ll join us for the first of more celebrations to come!
