These tax changes have been in effect since the 2019 tax year, so if you are a returning student and have already added your SIN in Aurora, you do not have to add it again.

How to add your Social Insurance Number (SIN) in Aurora:

1. Login to Aurora.
2. Locate “Verify my SIN” card and select “Help me Verify my SIN”.
3. Enter your SIN.

Once you have landed on your homepage, locate the “Verify my SIN card” and confirm your information is correct. If you are unable to update an incorrect SIN, contact the Registrar.Office@umanitoba.ca for assistance.

Please note, that if you select the “No Social Insurance Number” option, you are indicating you do not have a valid SIN. All students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents should have a valid SIN.

If your SIN is incorrect, or Aurora says you need to update your SIN, you must contact the Registrar’s Office or Extended Education to have it corrected. Do not send your SIN to us – instead, contact us by phone or email and we will assist you in updating your SIN securely through Aurora.

Tax Form Availability

Tax forms are released annually, usually near the end of February, and is ONLY available online through Aurora.

The registration revision period – your last opportunity to make changes to your class schedule without risking financial penalty – is coming up soon.

The registration revision period is the first two weeks of classes in the Fall and Winter Terms. During this period, changes can still be made to your course registrations without any academic or financial penalties.

Revision period dates:

1. Last day to drop courses is: January 19, 2025
2. Last day to add courses is: January 20, 2025

Remember: The last day to add a course falls one day after the last day to drop a course without financial penalty. This means that if you register for a course on the deadline to add courses, you cannot drop the course afterward. You can still voluntarily withdraw from the course, but the course will appear on your transcript with ‘VW’ as the grade and you will be responsible for paying the fees associated with the course.

During the registration revision period…

• You can add and remove courses to create a timetable that suits your needs.
• Courses that you decide to drop or change during this period will not be added to your student records or your academic transcript.
• You will receive a notification if a seat becomes available in a course you are on the waitlist for, and you can then register for it.
• Any changes that you make to your course registration will reflect on your tuition.
• If you drop a course during this period, your fees for that course will be reversed accordingly.

Waitlisted courses and the revision period

During the revision period…

• If you are on the waitlist for a course that you no longer need, please make sure that you drop yourself from the list. This will allow a notification to be sent to the next student on the waitlist without delay

Dropping a course after the revision period

At the end of the Revision period…

• Once the registration revision period is over, you are still able to Voluntary Withdraw (VW) from a course up to a certain date in the term. However, please note that a Voluntary Withdraw will appear on your transcript as a VW and you will still have to pay the tuition associated with the course.

Remember – Think before you drop!

Update your residency status

If you have recently become a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen, then you can update your residency status in your Aurora account. Updating your status during the revision period will enable you to receive a fee adjustment and pay domestic tuition rates for the current term.

Please note that if you have updated your status after the registration revision period, you will be required to pay international rates for the current term and will pay domestic rates for your following term(s).

Steps to Update your Residency status:

1. Login to Aurora.
2. Select ‘Personal Information.’
3. Select ‘Change Residency Status’.
4. From here, follow the steps on the screen and have the required documentation ready to upload.

Not attending UM courses this fall?

If you don’t plan to attend UM, you must drop all courses before the end of the revision period to avoid being charged fees for your courses.

Steps to leave UM:

If you plan to leave UM, make sure you confirm the following information:

1. Remove yourself from any courses and ensure that you do not have any active registration.
2. Check your account summary in Aurora to ensure that you have no outstanding fees.
3. Check your holds in Aurora to ensure you have nothing outstanding.
4. Contact an academic advisor in your faculty/program to ensure that you have no outstanding obligations with them.

We want to ensure that all registered students have the necessary information to kick off the academic year smoothly. This information will help you navigate the beginning of the term.

Course Adds and Drops (Revision Period)

The registration revision period, commonly known as the ‘add and drop’ period, allows you to make course or timetable changes without academic or financial penalties. Dropped courses during this time will not appear on your transcripts, and tuition fees for these courses will be reversed.

• Drop a course deadline: January 19, 2026
• Add a course deadline: January 20, 2026

During the revision period, you can:

• Add a class if a seat becomes available or if you change your mind about a subject
• Register for a course from your waitlist if space becomes available
• Update your residency status in Aurora and receive a fee adjustment if applicable

After the revision period, you can still withdraw from a class, but it will be recorded on your transcript, and you will be responsible to pay for all fees for that course.

Photo Identification (ID) Cards 

The Pop-Up Photo ID Centre will be open at the Fort Garry Campus, stop by UMSU University Centre, room 102B, during these dates and times:

• January 6^th – 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
• January 7^th – 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Students can check in online for faster service. ID cards are also required to obtain the U-Pass for Winnipeg Transit bus service.

Verify your Social Insurance Number

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) mandates that the university collect Social Insurance Numbers (SINs) to issue T2202 tax forms. You can verify your SIN on your Aurora homepage under “Verify my SIN card.” Those needing corrections can contact Registrar.Office@umanitoba.ca for assistance.

The Registrar’s Office will not be processing most document orders over this period, and document orders will be unavailable starting on December 18 at 4:30 PM. They will be reactivated on January 5.

The following services will be unavailable to students during this period:

How to Prepare:

1. Order Essential Documents:

• • Consider ordering transcripts and enrolment verifications beforehand.
  • Run a degree audit if you need to.

2. Talk to Your Academic Advisor:

• • If you have academic-related concerns, reach out to your academic advisor for guidance.

3. Handle Fee Payments in Advance:

• • To avoid any account holds, make sure to settle your fees before the shutdown.
  • Payments received during the upgrade will be processed once the system is back.

Note that this is only one day after students return to classes following reading week.

Deciding to withdraw from a course can be challenging. Whether you’re considering a change in your academic path or facing personal difficulties that affect your studies, it’s important to understand your options and the potential impact of your decision.

Before You Withdraw

1. Talk to Your Instructor
   Discuss your concerns with your course instructor. They may have strategies to help you improve before the term ends.
2. Consult Your Academic Advisor
   Meet with your academic advisor to review your course load, study strategies, and options for retaking the course in the future.
3. Know the Requirements
   Be aware of course load requirements and the implications of a VW. If you have a government student loan, are a sponsored student, a Bison athlete, or are in another situation that requires a minimum course load, this is especially important.
4. Check Your Program Requirements
   Refer to the First Year Planning Guide or the Academic Calendar to understand where this course fits into your intended or current program.
5. Consider Prerequisites
   Verify if this course is a prerequisite for upper-level courses in your program.
6. Look at Future Offerings
   Check current and previous Summer Term schedules to see if the course will be offered again this year.

Important Notes on VW and Your Student Record

• No refund will be issued for a course withdrawn via VW.
• VW’d courses will be recorded on official transcripts and student records with a final grade of VW.
• Courses cannot be withdrawn after the VW deadline has passed.

Below is a round up of some of the most important cards that were launched or updated and what it means for students.

Financial Aid and Awards Card

 As of October 27, students can now view their financial aid and awards in the new Financial Aid and Awards card in Aurora. Please note that this information is no longer available in Aurora Classic.

The new card is one place to find and manage both general and personalized financial aid details.

Students can use the links in the card to:

• View My Student Aid – Review award details and accept or decline awards.
• Apply for Student Aid – Start a new scholarship or bursary application.
• View My Applications – View or modify existing applications.

Additionally, students can now access their award letters directly from the Financial Aid and Awards card by selecting

• View My Award Letters – View both current and historical award letters.

My Tuition and Fees card

As of November 3, students will use the new My Tuition and Fees card to access their tuition and fee information. This information will no longer have access on Aurora Classic.

They can search for the card using keywords like “tuition” or “fees.” The card is also available on the Aurora Essentials tab of a student’s Aurora dashboard.

The card displays five terms regardless of admission date and includes payment due dates.

  • Detailed fee breakdowns in Aurora (Account Summary Details)
  • Payment Information
  • Self-Service Account Summary document (the RO will no longer be stamping or signing printed copies)

Declare my Major/Minor/Concentration card

Major, Minor and Concentration declarations are moving out of Aurora Classic on Monday, November 3rd. 

In Aurora, students will locate the Declare My Major, Minor, or Concentration card and click on the link.

Students now see their exams in Aurora and the final exam schedule on the UM website.

Exam locations will be finalized and posted approximately 5 days after the November 18 VW deadline.

Note that the schedules in Aurora and on the UM website only display exams scheduled by the Registrar’s Office (RO). Exam scheduled by a department or by a professor will not appear in these places. If there is a conflict between an exam scheduled by the RO and an exam scheduled by a department or professor , reach out to your department to resolve the conflict as soon as possible.

To find your final exam date, time, and location, select the “My Exams” card.

• Orange text indicates new information.
• Black text represents current information.
• Greyed-out text shows past exam dates.

ABOUT CONVOCATION

Ceremonies for October graduands from the Fort Garry campus will be held from October 21-23, 2025.

A separate ceremony will be held for graduating students from the Bannatyne campus on November 6, 2025.

The energy was electric inside the Desautels Concert Hall as 11 finalists took the stage at the 2025 Falling Walls Lab Manitoba Finale, competing in front of more than 200 audience members. Each had just three minutes to pitch their groundbreaking idea, all aiming to “break walls” and change the world.

For the first time ever, IDEA START, in partnership with the University of Manitoba (UM) and the University of Winnipeg (UWinnipeg), hosted the Falling Walls Lab Manitoba Finale, bringing together some of the province’s brightest minds in a celebration of innovation, research, and collaboration.

The evening opened in a good way with Grandmother Karen Courchene, who offered her blessings and welcoming words. This was followed by a moving Indigenous drum performance by Singing Wolf, setting a tone of respect, tradition, and unity.

Adding to the evening’s significance, Hon. Minister Mike Moroz, Minister of Innovation and New Technology, attended as chief guest and underscored Manitoba’s growing innovation landscape:

“What a great event! The work being done here is incredibly important and will drive the economy in years to come. We are proud that IDEA START, in partnership with the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg, is hosting this event, which not only showcases the ingenuity of our students and researchers but also reinforces our province’s commitment to fostering innovation at every level… Your bold thinking is exactly what we need to move forward.”

The event was smoothly emceed by Janine Carmichael (University of Manitoba) and Lauren Bosc (University of Winnipeg), whose engaging presence kept the evening flowing seamlessly.
Leaders from the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg, and IDEA START highlighted the collaboration that made the evening possible.

Hans-Joachim Wieden, Associate Vice-President, Partnership, Knowledge Mobilisation, and Innovation, University of Manitoba said:

A lively jazz interlude by the The Emma Lewis Trio from the Desautels Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba gave the audience and finalists a chance to recharge before the winners were announced.

Winners of the 2025 Falling Walls Lab Manitoba

First Place: Luma Clarindo Lopes 
Breaking the Walls of Antibiotic Resistance
University of Manitoba

Luma claimed the top prize with her innovative approach to combatting antibiotic resistance, one of the greatest threats to modern medicine. Her work could enable rapid identification of resistance before treatment begins, saving lives worldwide. She will now represent Manitoba at the Falling Walls Global Finale in Berlin this November.
Reflecting on her experience, Luma shared:

“Being selected as a finalist was thrilling, and the coaching sessions were especially valuable in refining my pitch and boosting my confidence. On stage, I felt adrenaline but also confident in my preparation. Falling Walls is an incredible initiative that gives researchers and entrepreneurs a platform to share their ideas. It was inspiring to see such amazing and innovative ideas coming out of Manitoba.”

Breaking the Wall of Intraoperative MRI Head Coil

Yujie impressed judges with her reimagined MRI head coil design, promising sharper imaging during surgery and better outcomes for patients.

Miranda addressed hidden biases in genomic datasets, ensuring advancements in genomics benefit all populations, not just a select few.

Santiago won over the audience with strategies to minimize human error in wildfire prevention and response, a timely idea in an era of escalating climate risks.
