Earlier today, Senate Executive (on behalf of Senate, the governing body of the university), approved several motions related to potential impacts on the academic schedule as a result of the strike. During any labour disruption, the academic schedule is modified to maintain the integrity of courses and programs, and to ensure that requirements for accreditation are upheld. Modifications are made based on potential scenarios that reflect hypothetical strike durations. In the motions noted below, two scenarios were presented to Senate Executive with hypothetical strike end dates (Scenario 1: on or before November 15; Scenario 2: between November 16 to 23). In both scenarios the fall academic term remains intact and the winter term commences as planned.

Academic calendar modifications

Scenario 1 [Return to teaching on or before November 15]:

The last instructional day of fall term, December 10, 2021 remains unchanged for continuing classes.

The last instructional day of fall term for interrupted classes will be December 16, 2021.

The voluntary withdrawal date will move from November 23 to November 29, 2021 for all classes, continuing and interrupted.

The December exam period will still occur from December 11 to December 23, 2021; however, given the extension of the fall term for interrupted classes, a new exam schedule must be created. The new exam schedule includes dates on the weekends. This schedule will be complete and available to students by December 1, 2021 and will replace the current exam schedule that was made available to students at the end of October.

Scenario 2 [Return to teaching between November 16 and November 23]:

The last instructional day of fall term, December 10, 2021 remains unchanged for continuing classes.

The last instructional day for fall term for interrupted classes will be December 23, 2021.

The voluntary withdrawal date will move from November 23 to December 7, 2021 for all classes, continuing and interrupted.

The original exam period, December 11 to 23, 2021, will continue as is for continuing courses that are not disrupted by the strike.

The dates of the alternate exam period will be January 6 to 9, 2022, inclusive. All courses interrupted by the strike will have their exams re-scheduled to occur during this alternate period.

The final grade appeal deadline will be moved from January 25, 2022, to January 28, 2022, for all classes, continuing and interrupted.

*Slight modifications may be required for both scenarios. Full details about the academic calendar changes can be found here.

What happens when the strike ends?

Once an agreement has been reached and the strike has ended, things may move quickly. UM and UMFA will announce that a tentative agreement has been reached, subject to ratification, and that will include the date when courses will resume.

Senate Executive also passed two motions intended to reduce any undue anxiety or hardship for students impacted by the strike:

No assignments will be due or exams held in interrupted courses within 72 hours of those courses resuming. This is to give students some time to complete assignments and to study.

Some students will have a combination of courses that continued throughout the strike, and courses with modified schedules because the instructor was on strike. Academic unit heads and academic staff shall ensure that students are not disadvantaged with respect to any missed classes, materials, assignments/tests when there is a scheduling conflict between a class and an exam. Please communicate directly with your instructors if you have a conflict.

This uncertainty can be stressful – please know that UM’s student support offices are open and more than happy to help during this time. Do not hesitate to reach out. There are also a variety of other resources being shared on our student Instagram account including academic resources and health and wellness supports.

If you have questions, visit the strike information website. If your questions are not answered there, please email strikeum@umanitoba.ca and we will help find you an answer.

Thank you for your patience during this challenging time. I know we all look forward to putting this chapter behind us.

At the beginning of May, the 2021-22 Academic Calendar was released on a new platform, providing students, staff and faculty with a new and improved digital experience. As the final, comprehensive version of the calendar launches today, June 30, here’s a look at what people are saying about it:

Jennifer Riddell, Student Systems and Timetabling Specialist
Faculty of Arts

I like how user-friendly and easy it is to navigate.

I like how the course descriptions are laid out and include the prerequisites, equivalent,

I like that when you click on a course number, the course description opens in a smaller window so you can quickly view the description, prerequisites etc.

I like how easy it is to make program edits and updates (especially with the program charts— having all the courses listed and adding them to a chart is really helpful.)

I like how my edits are saved and won’t be published until I submit a workflow.

Autumn T.
Student, Faculty of Arts

I love how easy it is to find information you’re looking for because the layout is simplified.

I like that clicking a title of a course pops up the course info without re-directing you to a different page.

Headers and titles make it easy to find what you’re looking for.

It’s quick and easy to navigate unlike a physical book or PDF.

It’s user-friendly and I think anyone could navigate this easily

Taylor Friesen, Student Services Supervisor
Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences

The new calendar is amazing. I like:

How you can look up all the undergraduate course descriptions by letter and subject.

The organization/structure— it’s easy to navigate. I like that our degree requirements and progression pages are separate, the pages aren’t as long and I think a student is more likely to read through 2 shorter pages than 1 big long one.

How simple it is to update. From an admin perspective, editing tables is so straight forward and there is no way (I’ve noticed yet) to mess up the formatting.

How much quicker the site is to load.

The look of it! It is clean, easy to read and understand.

Explore the new and improved Academic Calendar, and use it to plan and register for your courses. You can also watch a video tour of the new platform.

On Monday, May 3, 2021, get your first look at what courses you can take to work towards your degree as UM launches the preliminary version of the 2021-22 Academic Calendar in a new, improved format.

“The old platform was not providing an ideal, modern experience for students,” Academic Calendar coordinator Gloria Saindon says. “We wanted a smooth and accessible online experience for users. Switching to a new platform has allowed us to recontextualize the calendar as a digital experience rather than a physical book, and as a result, this year’s calendar has a more intuitive design, it’s faster and it’s mobile-friendly. It also has a powerful search engine, so it’s a lot easier to find what you’re looking for.”

The Academic Calendar is a comprehensive publication that outlines what you need to do to get your degree. Inside, you will find:

UM’s policies and procedures

Academic regulations

Important dates

Information on all programs and faculties

Important resources and contact information

Course descriptions, including pre-requisites, mutually exclusive courses and equivalent course information

“One key to student success is taking the right courses in the right order to accomplish your degree, and the calendar is a helpful tool for that,” says Saindon. “Most students don’t want to waste time or money taking the wrong thing. The new calendar puts degree information on one page with easy to navigate tabs. Between UM Achieve and the Academic Calendar you can find everything you need to know about degree completion. For additional support, you can also connect with an academic advisor who can help you navigate the options that are available to you.”

There are three versions of the Academic Calendar— undergraduate, graduate and one for programs and courses offered through Université de Saint-Boniface. While planning your course load, you’re encouraged to look at courses for both Fall and Winter Terms and register for both.

Whether it’s your first time using the Academic Calendar or you haven’t looked at it since your first year, check out the preliminary edition when it launches May 3. The final, comprehensive version will launch on July 2 in advance of course registration for Fall Term.
