The 2025 event was a big success and included talks from UM researchers and alumni, and a musical performance by Victoria Sparks, a renowned percussionist in the Desautels Faculty of Music. 

UM is excited to host this event again at the beautiful Desautels Concert Hall, and TEDxWinnipeg provides exceptional speaker training to prepare you for this stage.

A visionary leader

L. Kerry Vickar

L. Kerry Vickar is an accomplished business leader, philanthropist and mentor, recognized for his integrity, civic engagement and commitment to stronger communities.

After earning his law degree from UM in 1980, he transitioned from law to business, leading Gravure Graphics Ltd. to significant growth before founding CorrFlex Graphics, a North American leader in retail displays. His business ventures continued with the transformation of an insolvent equipment rental company into the largest Hyundai heavy equipment dealer in North America and the world’s largest Bell Truck dealer. He now serves as Executive Chairman of an injection mold manufacturing firm.

Mr. Vickar’s philanthropic legacy is equally profound. Through the Kerry and Simone Vickar Family Foundation, he supports health, education, and the arts, including endowed chairs at Cedars Sinai and the Levine Cancer Institute, and a Civic Centre in Melfort, Saskatchewan that bears his name. At UM, he established the L. Kerry Vickar Business Law Clinic, offering free legal services to underserved entrepreneurs while providing experiential learning for law students.

In recognition of his visionary leadership, philanthropy and enduring commitment to education and community, L. Kerry Vickar will receive a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.

An innovative designer

Mary Kerr

Dr. Mary Kerr is a visionary artist, designer and educator who has earned international acclaim as one of Canada’s pre-eminent theatre creators. For more than four decades, she has transformed the worlds of theatre, ballet, opera, film, television and special events with her conceptually inventive and striking designs. Born in Winnipeg, she earned a BFA (Hons) in sculpture and literature from UM before pursuing graduate studies at the University of Toronto’s Medieval Centre, where she realized the world of theatre was where she could combine all the arts she loved.

Her award-winning career includes credits at the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, the Canadian Opera Company, the National Ballet of Canada, the Danny Grossman Dance Company and the Paris Opera Ballet. Her work was showcased globally at Expo 67, Expo 86, and the 1994 Commonwealth Games opening and closing ceremonies.

Dr. Kerr is the only theatre designer elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. As a mentor and educator, she has inspired generations of designers and championed equity for women production designers in Canadian theatre art.

For her remarkable achievements in performance design, her leadership in advancing the art of Canadian scenography, and her enduring commitment to mentorship and collaboration, Dr. Mary Kerr will receive a Doctor of Letters, honoris causa.

During Fall Convocation, the university will also honour five faculty members:

• Warren Cariou, Lisa Lix and Joerg Stetefeld will be appointed Distinguished Professors.
• Jocelyn Thorpe will receive the Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Saunderson Award for Excellence in Teaching.
• Wan Wang will receive the Olive Beatrice Stanton Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Hong Kong is recovering from one of its most severe typhoon in years, and Glory Wang BED 1998 is spending a quiet day in the head office of Atelier Pacific in North Point district. In her role as its managing director, the architect shuttles between Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore to oversee 73 designers, architects and support staff. Unlike most firms, Atelier Pacific expanded rapidly during the pandemic, opening its Shanghai office in April 2021 followed by Singapore in 2023. Wang takes it all in stride as clients including Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Salvatore Ferragamo keep coming back for more.

Unlike a stereotypical luxury brand designer, Wang is far from dripping head to toe in European labels. Instead, she opens the door to Atelier Pacific comfortably attired in running shoes, jeans and t-shirts. She is always ready for a good laugh, often at herself or to join in the fun. It is no wonder that she has fond memories of fierce ditchball games in the mid-90s when she was working towards her Bachelor of Environmental Design (Architecture) at UM.

“Ditchball was a big thing,” she recalls, settling into her chair in the studio’s boardroom overlooking Victoria Harbour. “Everyone had to participate. What I remember more was Sketch Camp at Gimli—a real eye opener. I had always been self-conscious about my hand drawing skills. At Sketch Camp, I learned that it was not about doing nice drawings; it was about the approach. Drawing was a means towards expression. So was photography, which I got into while at Gimli. And we stayed in a Viking settlement population 500. The mayor was also the high school principal. I had a really good time.”

Born in Hong Kong, Wang’s family emigrated to Vancouver when she was 11 years old. “I originally wanted to go to culinary school,” she confesses. “Although fairly liberal, my parents balked at what traditional Chinese families assumed would be a tough job in a greasy kitchen slinging out chow mein. They encouraged me to consider something else. I was pretty ignorant and thought that architecture would be easy: drawing and model making without any need to study. Since at the time, UBC only had a master program for architecture, the next closest university was UM. It was crazy! I applied with my portfolio, got accepted and moved to Winnipeg without knowing anything about it. After staying with family friends for a few nights when I first arrived, I moved into Mary Speechly Hall.”

Being from milder climes, Wang was unprepared for snow in October. Yet being part of the Mary Speechly community for her entire stay in Winnipeg gave her a sense of grounding and yen for pierogi. History lessons with Robert Madill gave her a fresh look at dusty days of yore. “Bob always walked in with Ray Bans,” she laughs. “He had them on the entire time we looked at slides in a dark room! I don’t know why he always wore shades—maybe he was trying too hard to look cool. Let’s face it: history is boring. But the way he shared his knowledge made it very memorable. He was a good teacher.”

Another professor she remembers fondly is Leon Feduniw, though she is much less enamoured at being pried out of bed for his 8:30 am tech class three days per week. “My friends and I were always late and we would always get stuck sitting in the front row where Leon could see we slept through most of his lectures,” she grins. Feduniw suggested that she enter an American student housing competition; Wang and her team won second prize and a trip ensued to accept the award in San Francisco. “It was my first time to San Francisco,” she recalls. “It was fun. Along with visiting one of the competition judges’ studios—my dream work place—we went sightseeing.”

After graduating in 1998, Wang worked for a couple of years in Hong Kong before returning to Canada to study in Ottawa. “UM gave me a good foundation for my master at Carleton,” she says, noting that she immediately returned to Hong Kong following graduation in 2004. “My brother was working here and we’re close,” Wang notes. “And frankly, Hong Kong salaries are better than Canadian ones.” She started at Wong Ouyang, one of the biggest architectural firms in the city at the time. Although she gained enough experience for her Hong Kong Institute of Architects license, she found herself oscillating between gratitude for being employed during the 2008 financial crisis and frustration at the government-like culture of working for a practice with hundreds of staff members.

“I messaged Nic one particularly annoying day and asked if he was hiring,” Wang remembers. She had previously interned for Nic Banks, a transplanted Brit who founded Atelier Pacific in 1996. By then, she knew she preferred working within a more intimate studio that espoused an architectural approach to interiors. “I think that’s the difference between education in Canada versus Hong Kong,” she posits. “In Canada, interior design is part of architecture and architects see interiors as part of their job—everything we do is about solving a client’s needs.”

One of her first and favourite projects was the extensive adaptive re-use of Hong Kong Fringe Club; she worked closely with clients Benny Chia and Catherine Lau to get the listed heritage building structurally sound and up to contemporary building codes. “It is an iconic building,” Wang states. “At the time, it was a hub for the local arts scene. I learned a lot about its history as Dairy Farm’s storage when it was first opened in 1845. The painful part was our very tight budget and dealing with a lot of changes as the project progressed. It was like helping a patient recover from cancer with the minimal amount of financial support. There was a lot of reinstatement to its original glory. A nice surprise was the discovery of floor tiles from the 1960s in the Fringe Dairy part of the building that were in good enough condition for us to leave in situ after some cleaning.”

Atelier Pacific is the preferred interior architect for luxury brands in greater China, and Wang particularly appreciates the firm’s longstanding relationship with Hermes. “Its attention to detail is hats off,” she shares. “It likes to explore materials and push boundaries.” Another niche area for the studio is signage and wayfinding, with Hong Kong Museum of Art a stand out project: “The museum today compared to prior its 2019 intervention is like night and day. It’s a fresh idea executed well, and our signage design complements the building.”

Wang was promoted to managing director four years ago after Banks relocated part-time to Europe. She admits that she designs much less these days, though she still gets excited about new projects. “I was the last man standing,” she smiles, referring to the constant poaching of colleagues by fashion houses for them to work in-house. “I am the designer remaining with the longest history,” she reveals. “As both a manager and the front person for our studio, I give clients faith and trust in what we do to return for their next project.”

She helped steer the firm’s expansion from a studio with 20 people in Hong Kong to almost quadruple in size with three studios across the region. “We are intentionally getting more architects on board to work on a wider range of projects. When I first joined, we did exhibitions, proposals for houses and smaller scaled projects. Now people know us for much more. For our 25th anniversary—which we couldn’t properly celebrate as it was the height of the pandemic closures—we wrapped a tram in colourful graphic renderings of our best projects. Everyone loved it.”

Looking back at her time in Winnipeg, Wang feels she owes UM a big thank you: “My architectural education helps me think outside the box. I encourage anyone and everyone who wants to make a difference to consider studying architecture at UM.”

Making a difference on a local and global scale

After earning his BSc and MD from the University of Manitoba in 1986, Jamie began his career as a physician in rural Manitoba with the UM’s Northern Medical Unit. This early experience sparked a passion for public health, inspiring him to pursue advanced degrees at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) a Master of Public Health in 1990 and a PhD in Epidemiology in 1997.

After his studies at JHU, Jamie returned home and served as Manitoba’s Provincial Epidemiologist (1992-2000) and rejoined the University of Manitoba as a faculty member in the departments of Community Health Sciences and Medical Microbiology in 1996. In 2001 he relocated to India and led the establishment of several large-scale UM public health projects focused on HIV and maternal, newborn and child health. After returning from India, he founded and took on the role of Director of the Centre for Global Public Health (now the Institute for Global Public Health). Over the years, his innovative research and leadership earned him a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in 2004, and most recently, a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair — which acknowledges him by his peers as a world leader in his field. — a recognition that came with $1.4 million in funding over seven years to support his broad and impactful research. His leadership has been instrumental in establishing the UM as an international leader in global public health, securing more than $450 million in international funding for research, program delivery and technical support.

“One of the unique aspects of being at the University of Manitoba is the long history and legacy of having responsibility. The University of Manitoba has had responsibility for providing care for people who live in the North and Indigenous communities.” Explains Jamie.

In 2020, his leadership helped transform the Centre for Global Public Health into the Institute of Global Public Health, a university-supported hub that encourages collaboration across disciplines and borders. The Institute’s approach has provided a globally-recognized model for how academic institutions can play a transformative role in improving health outcomes for underserved and marginalized populations.

“There’s always been that sense that the university is not just there to do the research and the teaching, but it’s also there to make a difference,” says Jamie. “And that has influenced the way that we do our global health programs.”

Leading change in public health

Jamie’s research is both wide-ranging and influential. His international work focuses on understanding how diseases like HIV and other sexually transmitted infections spread through diverse populations, including in India. By studying transmission networks, he’s helped shape prevention strategies that are now used around the world.

Closer to home, his work has looked at why some communities in Canada face higher rates of diseases like diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease. By exploring the factors behind these disparities, Jamie has aimed to develop targeted prevention programs that can improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations.

His work bridges scientific discovery and real-world impact — translating research into effective public health programs and collaborating with policymakers and health leaders both in Canada and internationally. His dedication has helped improve health outcomes for disadvantaged communities.

Jamie’s contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2001 Frederick G. Banting Award from the Canadian Diabetes Foundation and the Rh Award for Health Sciences in 2006. He also received the Scholastic Award from Doctors Manitoba in 2013 and was named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2022.

A humble leader focused on service

Despite his many accomplishments, Jamie remains humble and focused on the greater good. His work is driven by a genuine desire to make a difference, often putting public interest above personal recognition. He is also dedicated to mentoring the next generation of leaders, sharing his knowledge and experience to inspire others. As he puts it, “In this line of work where you depend on so many people at your institution and within your teams around the world, having this honour reminds me how privileged I’ve been to able to work with such a great team and in such a supportive university environment.”

Jamie’s career exemplifies the qualities celebrated by the Distinguished Alumni Award for Academic Innovation. His pioneering research, guidance, and constant dedication continue to inspire those around him. As he shapes public health policy and practice worldwide, his legacy as a leader and innovator grows stronger. We’re proud to celebrate Jamie’s remarkable journey at the 66th UM Distinguished Alumni Awards presented by TD Insurance on September 18, 2025.

A career built on passion and perseverance 

Brian’s journey with the Bisons began at a young age. “My dad took me to watch my first Bison Football game in 1968.” Brian recalls. Just a few years later Brian was on that same field, this time playing on the Bisons football team while he pursued his Bachelor of Physical Education degree in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management. After graduating, he embarked on a coaching career that would span decades and redefine excellence. His first coaching role was with the Churchill High School Bulldogs, where he led the team to three Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL) championships and solidified his reputation as a leader who could inspire greatness. 

In 1996, Brian took the helm of the Bisons Football program, beginning a 29-year tenure that would make him the winningest coach in Bisons history. His dedication to scouting and recruiting has brought exceptional talent to the Bisons Football program, while his genuine care for each athlete and their families has created a foundation of trust and respect.  

His accolades include six Canada West Coach of the Year awards, a U SPORTS Coach of the Year award, two U SPORTS National Championship appearances, and a coveted Vanier Cup title in 2007. 

“It’s not just winning the Vanier Cup in 2007. It’s the process. It’s everything that led to it and what we went through to be up there. To me, this ring and that Vanier Cup championship quite literally symbolize the best of everything. It stands as a testament to all of our teams—those who have worked tirelessly to represent the University of Manitoba, both past and present,” reflects Brian.

Brian’s impact is evident in the success of his players. Under his guidance, 64 student-athletes were drafted by CFL teams, and two went on to play in the NFL. Many of his former players have also become coaches, carrying forward the lessons they learned from Brian through every province in the country, including four CFL coaches.

A legacy of leadership 

What truly sets Brian apart is his unwavering commitment to his players. Beyond the wins and accolades, he fostered a family-like culture that prioritized personal growth and community. His tireless efforts in recruiting, fundraising, and mentorship have created a legacy of support that extends far beyond the field. 

“Our ultimate goal is to develop these men and women. No question about it. Winning is a byproduct of the entire process.” 

Brian’s dedication to building a thriving football program has been a cornerstone of his leadership. From the days when the team’s facilities included a tin shed locker room, Dobie’s vision for growth and excellence has driven every step forward. “It was a huge thing that happened for that stadium to get built on our campus. It elevated our program to new standards and exposed our athletes to a whole new level of professionalism. Our athletes understand their responsibility in passing that culture forward,” he emphasizes, highlighting the deep-rooted pride and forward-looking spirit that fuels the program. The milestone moment came with the opening of the new stadium on campus. Brian vividly recalls the electrifying atmosphere during the inaugural game, describing how “There were 12,000 people. It felt like there were 222,000 people!” That roar not only celebrated a new chapter for UM Football, but a testament to Brian’s relentless dedication to elevating the program and creating a legacy for future generations of athletes. 

Brian’s greatest accomplishment is the profound impact of the program beyond the field, saying, “We’re part of something that counts — that matters. This is the best classroom in the world. I genuinely mean it. In terms of people growing and learning about themselves and dealing with adversity, dealing with all the intrinsics that come with that of a football program. Everybody is there to back everybody up,” reiterating the character, resilience and strong relationships built in the Bisons Football program that will be a lasting legacy.

Early foundations and entrepreneurial spirit

Rick’s story begins in Winnipeg, but it is rooted in a rich family legacy of resilience and ambition. His relatives, who emigrated from Hungary, started the family business in their garage, driven by hard work and a dream of building something lasting. This humble beginning laid the foundation for a family tradition of entrepreneurship and innovation. Rick first stepped into the family business as a student and became Duha Group’s Managing Director in 1991. Under his leadership, the company evolved from a modest local operation into a global powerhouse specializing in innovative colour marketing tools. Today, the Duha Group operates across eight countries on five continents, serving customers in more than 130 countries. With over 275 employees in Manitoba and more than 500 worldwide, Rick’s vision and strategic leadership have not only propelled the company’s sustained growth and success but also highlight the vital importance of maintaining a strong presence in Manitoba.

“I’m proud that we made the decision that Winnipeg was the best place to be in the Americas for our business.” Rick reflects. “You’re never more than one or two degrees of separation away from understanding or being able to access key decision makers in the community. You can ask questions, you can learn from your answers, you can understand them better.”

Innovation and industry leadership

Rick’s entrepreneurial achievements are complemented by his pioneering contributions to the colour manufacturing industry. Recognizing the importance of continuous improvement, he established the Duha Center of Excellence, developing methodologies adopted globally to streamline processes and enhance efficiency. His insights into process improvement and quality management have set new standards in the industry, influencing organizations far beyond his own company.

“We grew organically through technology. We grew innovation. But we also grew with relationships and with partnerships.” Rick states, emphasizing the importance of the team behind the work. His leadership in this area has earned numerous accolades, including awards from the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and industry recognition for excellence in manufacturing and leadership.

Global impact and strategic direction

Rick’s influence extends well beyond Manitoba. Rick is an accredited Corporate Director (earned at Asper School in 2021) and serves in that capacity for companies in the UK, Australia, Germany, Singapore, US and China. His leadership in these diverse markets underscores his global reach and demonstrates his capacity to adapt, innovate, and inspire across cultures and industries.

His involvement with YPO, the world’s premier peer network of CEOs, further represents his leadership. As a longtime member, he served on their Global Board from 2015 to 2018.  Following that service, he moved to YPO’s management side, serving as COO from 2020 to 2022, Rick directed teams in 34 countries and supported over 33,000 global CEOs. His tenure was marked by transformative initiatives, including the creation of the Global Concierge program, which enhanced member engagement worldwide. His dedication to fostering leadership excellence has made him a respected figure in the international business community.

Dedication to community and education

Despite his international success, Rick remains deeply rooted in his Manitoba origins. His service to the community is evident through his active participation in local initiatives and his support for educational causes. In 2016, he established the Duha Family Graduate Scholarship in Business at UM, helping to nurture future generations of business leaders. His involvement in the Rod Senft Family Business Conference and support for St. Paul’s High School and United Way of Winnipeg reflect his ongoing commitment to community development.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rick and the Duha Group pivoted their operations to produce large batches of hand sanitizer, donating proceeds to the Health Science Centre Foundation. “It was a moment to come together as a community and give back,” he recalls. In moments of crisis, his steadfast leadership powerfully demonstrates his deep dedication to service and the betterment of his community.

Rick’s long-standing relationship with UM exemplifies his commitment to giving back. As a member of the President’s Advisory Council and a former campaign team member for the Front and Centre campaign, which raised over $626 million, Rick has demonstrated his belief in the transformative power of education. His support for the Asper School of Business and the establishment of the Duha Family Graduate Scholarship highlight his dedication to fostering academic excellence.

A legacy of inspiration and impact

Rick Duha’s legacy is one of transformative leadership, innovation, and community service. His journey from a family business to a global enterprise, coupled with his unwavering dedication to Manitoba and UM, embodies the qualities celebrated by the Distinguished Alumni Award in Lifetime Achievement.

His story inspires current and future generations to pursue excellence, serve others, and lead with integrity. As Rick recently assumed the role of Chair of the Business Council of Manitoba, his influence continues to grow, shaping the economic and social fabric of the community.

Tréchelle Bunn’s [BA/23] journey at UM showcases her academic excellence and community dedication. As a proud member and newly elected Chief of the Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Criminology, made the Dean’s Honour List, and was the student speaker at the 2023 Traditional Graduation Pow Wow. Now pursuing a law degree at Robson Hall, she is a passionate advocate for Indigenous rights, reconciliation, and social justice. From founding the Reconciliation Run to speaking at the United Nations, her work aims to uplift Indigenous voices and drive meaningful change. We proudly celebrate Tréchelle as the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for Outstanding Young Alumni.

Education and community engagement

As she wrapped up her second year in the Juris Doctor program at Robson Hall, Tréchelle advocates for systemic reform aimed at reducing the over-incarceration of Indigenous peoples and improving access to legal resources.

“Education is a tool for change,” Tréchelle explains. “It’s about more than just personal growth—it’s about uplifting those around us and creating pathways for future generations.” Her time at UM not only honed her academic skills but also cultivated her leadership abilities. She credits the university’s supportive environment for helping her balance academics, athletics, and advocacy work, shaping her into a well-rounded leader.

Her leadership roles extend to serving as Vice President of Internal Relations for the Manitoba Indigenous Law Students Association, co-chair of the Provincial Suicide Prevention Strategy Advisory Group, and board member for organizations like the Nellie McClung Foundation and the Southern First Nations Network of Care. Trechelle went from serving as the Southern Chiefs Organization’s Youth Chief to most recently being elected Chief of the Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation. Making her the first woman elected as Chief in her nation and the youngest serving Chief in Manitoba. These positions exemplify her dedication to community well-being and systemic change.

Reconciliation in action

Tréchelle’s commitment to reconciliation and Indigenous rights is evident through her innovative initiatives. Her most notable project, the Reconciliation Run, is a 26-kilometer walk from the former Birtle Residential School to Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, which evolved into an annual half-marathon held on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This event – honouring her grandparents who were residential school survivors – has grown to attract participants from across Canada and serves as a powerful symbol of healing and remembrance.

Proceeds from the Reconciliation Run fund the Reconciliation Run Scholarship, which supports the recruitment of Indigenous athletes to Bison Sports and creates opportunities for future generations and encourage the use of sport as a powerful tool for reconciliation. “This scholarship removes barriers and opens doors,” Tréchelle emphasizes. “It’s about giving Indigenous youth the opportunity to thrive in sports and education—something I am deeply passionate about.”

Athletic achievement and mentorship

Tréchelle’s athletic pursuits as a member of the Bisons Women’s Hockey Team exemplify her dedication to excellence and teamwork. Beyond her contributions on the ice, she co-launched a mentorship program aimed at Indigenous youth, encouraging participation in sports and education while celebrating cultural heritage. This initiative reflects her belief in leading by example and fostering opportunities for Indigenous youth to succeed.

Her athletic journey has been more than personal achievement; it’s a platform for community empowerment. “Being part of the team taught me the importance of resilience and collaboration,” she shares. “I want to inspire young Indigenous athletes to see that anything is possible with hard work and support.”

Advocacy and future impact

Her advocacy extends to international platforms as well. Tréchelle has addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, raising awareness about issues such as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit individuals. Her voice amplifies the urgent need for systemic change and justice.

Tréchelle’s impactful work has garnered numerous awards, including an Indspire Award, the CBC Manitoba Future 40 Award, the First Peoples Law Indigenous Student Scholarship, and the UM Emerging Leader Award. Tréchelle’s accomplishments are a testament to her dedication to her community, her education, and her advocacy for Indigenous rights. Her story inspires others to pursue their passions while uplifting those around them.

She reflects on her journey with humility: “Mentorship and leading by example are my guiding principles. I want to show young Indigenous people that their dreams are valid and achievable.”

As she continues her legal studies and advocacy work, Tréchelle remains committed to fostering Reconciliation, justice, and opportunity for Indigenous youth. “My goal is to give back, to be a silent leader and lead by example. If I can inspire even one person to believe in themselves and their potential, I know I’ve made a difference.”

Kristie credits UM as playing a pivotal role in shaping her outlook. “UM is an incredible connector,” she notes. “It has strong ties to both business and community. That’s where real connections and growth happen.” Her reflections underscore UM’s role as a hub for fostering community and service. 

The heart behind Linking Hope 

Kristie’s journey to founding Linking Hope began with a simple yet profound realization: many people want to help but don’t know where to start. The organization connects businesses and individuals with surplus goods to local grassroots agencies that can directly distribute these resources to those in need. “I’m really just a linker of people and a supporter of others doing the really hard front-line work.” she says modestly. What started as a series of emails to connect friends with local charities has grown into a thriving organization that simplifies giving and volunteering for busy individuals. Linking Hope isn’t just a nonprofit—it’s a movement that reminds us all that even small acts of kindness can ripple outward and create lasting impact. 

Raising voices, building bridges 

Kristie’s work is deeply personal. As a mother to Cameron, a non-binary child, she understands the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels valued. “Understanding doesn’t happen overnight,” she reflects. “It’s a journey that takes time to absorb.” Her advocacy for the LGBTQ2S+ community is rooted in this belief, and her efforts with the Rainbow Resource Centre have helped raise over $900,000 to support critical programs, such as counselling. 

Her commitment to amplifying marginalized voices extends to her work with Clan Mothers Healing Village, an Indigenous-led initiative providing healing and education for women who have experienced systemic trauma. Kristie’s ability to listen, learn, and act with humility has made her a trusted ally in spaces where trust is hard-earned. 

Mobilizing communities with heart 

Kristie’s leadership is marked by her ability to bring people together. “I remember taking my first marketing class at UM in commerce. It was one of my electives, and the professor there wowed me. He showed me that marketing and communications can really shift opinions and change perceptions,” she says. “And that’s what I try to do—bring people together around causes that matter.” As Co-Chair of the United Way Winnipeg’s 2023 campaign, she inspired a team of volunteers to raise $22.8 million for over 125 community agencies. Her work on the Downtown YMCA-YWCA’s $15-million capital campaign is another example of her ability to rally support for causes that matter. In summer 2025 Kristie will be honoured with the Order of Manitoba, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the community and her unwavering dedication to service. 

But perhaps her greatest legacy is the way she lives her life—with kindness, curiosity, and a deep belief in the power of connection. As a wife, mother of three, and community leader, Kristie shows us that it’s possible to balance personal and professional responsibilities while still making time to lift others up. 

A call to lean in 

Kristie’s work is a reminder that we all have a role to play in creating a more inclusive and compassionate world. “The word ally should be used as a verb, not as a noun,” she says. Her words challenge us to move beyond passive support and take active steps to make a difference.
